Transcript of Moving Into Motherhood

The practice of yoga during pregnancy maintains health & well being,
boosts energy, refreshes from fatigue, calms & relaxes nervous system,
enhances bonding with your baby and increases your innate confidence and
capabilities as you move into motherhood.
All the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga are also being passed to your baby- wonderful gifts for
the next generation to start life with!
Poses to strengthen legs and feet, such as triangle and warrior poses are important
as body weight increases and to feel strong and confident to use upright standing type positions during birth.
Joint flexibility is aimed for optimum circulation of the increased blood and
lymphatic fluids carried in the body during pregnancy, thereby reducing the risk of fluid retention, swelling, tendonitis, and
carpel tunnel.
Movements such as ankle, foot, wrist and finger rotations maintain flexibility and
circulation.
Strengthening the arms & shoulders is important for breast feeding & baby care. Self massage techniques are practiced to
encourage a healthy glandular system which in turn assists optimum healthy
breastfeeding.
Balance poses help stabilize you as your center of balance and posture changes.
They also encourage you to focus on “one thing at a time” - which is exactly what is
needed in birthing and mothering.
During pregnancy, balance poses need to be practised with supports for safety -
such as a chair or a wall.
Side stretches open the respiratory system, rib cage and upper body which relieves
breathlessness and that feeling of “full of baby”.
Movement- hip circles, swaying and swinging in standing, kneeling & all fours,
relieves tension in lower back & pelvis.
Wide leg positions help to stabilize the pelvis and encourage flexibility of the lower body.
Standing, sitting & kneeling birthing positions & breathing techniques for use
during pregnancy and birthing are practised to aid relaxation and focus of
body and mind.
Relaxation & visualization is practiced for physical, mental & emotional well being. In
pre-natal yoga the lotus symbolizes the cervix, each pedal gradually unfolding
brings your baby closer to birth.
Post natal yoga focuses on strengthening the
abdominals and pelvic floor area, breast health and upper back and
shoulders, as these are the areas which
work hard to look after your baby.
Pre & Post Natal Massage:
supports the body changes and the softening skeleto-muscular system
facilitates increased blood and lymphatic flow in the body
reduces fluid retention & varicose veins
relieves muscular tension
maintains breast health and glandular system
allows you to connect with yourself as you become a mother and with your baby.
All these benefits are also passed through to your baby.
