Hanbury Street The East End Film Festival has deep ties to Hanbury Street, residing as it does in the belly of Europe’s most diverse and culturally historic quarter – London’s East End. This is celebrated with a programme of filmic events exploring the rich cultural history of this unique community. Look forward and back at East End Jewish culture through cinema and sound with Queen Mary University and Christophe Dupin, followed by the legendary Klezmer Klub and Vivi Lachs. Move into the heart of the mystery as we unravel the Grade II listed Greek-style Masonic temple at Andaz Hotel, Liverpool Street. This is your chance to see three secret society themed films in one of London’s most atmospheric settings: the Hughes Brothers’ From Hell, Marc Singer’s Dark Days and Christophe Gans’ Brotherhood of the Wolf. Electric Sheep then present a discussion on secret societies in film featuring Electric Sheep editor Viginie Sélavy, Nollywood scholar Nicola Woodham and filmmaker and horror specialist Jennifer Eiss, taking in witches’ covens, suicide clubs and religious cults in cinema. market 12pm -6pmFormerly a mod with a passion for punk

rock, Roger Sargent worked for Rolling Stone, Mojo, Daily Telegraph and The Guardian. Regularly called “the UK’s most important music photographer”, this photographic exhibition accompanies his feature documentary recounting last year’s monumental Libertines reunion. Several of his classic images are exhibited alongside previously unseen photographs of the band. market 12pm -6pmPhil Maxwell has photographed the East End for the past 30 years, capturing culture, class, environment, housing, portraits and protest. Now we exhibit A Sense of Place, a selection of his classic and new work, which is simultaneously both East End and international. His classic black and white street photography is accompanied by stunning eclectic photomontages exploring issues around architecture, globalisation, migration, power and wealth.

Join us for a barbeque and live jazz as the Heritage Trail kicks off at the Water Poet with the screening of A brief History of Community Celebration in addition to screenings of Sins of London, The Rime of the Modern Mariner, Sylvia Pankhurst and a retrospective of Phil Maxwell and Hazuan Hashims’ work . Launching at The Water Poet as part of the Royal Wedding celebrations, The Heritage Trail will be comprised of footage sourced from national and local East End archives focusing on the theme of street parties and community celebration. It’s amazing what you can see from the moon. As if that wasn’t enough, we also have London animation studio 12Foot6 presenting a series of shorts including Dog Judo...All Roy wants is to do some proper judo. But Rexley would rather drop stuff on his head and electrocute him. screening of his short docu-feature Ok, Cut and discusses the reactions of both religious vanguards and the youth to his film Third Person Singular Number, premiering at 3pm at Rich Mix, and Simon Chambers screens Cowboys in India and Every Good Marriage Begins with Tears, which follows two sisters as they prepare for their nuptials, providing a unique insight into the world of arranged marriage. From cinema to sound, Jewish heritage runs deep in the East End. The department of Film Studies at Queen Mary University will screen the classic 1962 short The Vanishing Street introduced by Christophe Dupin, followed by Klezmer singer Vivi Lachs, talking about the heritage of Yiddish music using costume and character, and cinema researcher Gil Toffel with historian David Rosenberg, discussing the mix between politics and cinema between the two World Wars. Finally, the legendary Klezmer Klub band and Vivi will play their special mix of traditional Klezmer and contemporary music. Also The School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary University will showcase the fresh and exciting work produced within the department as part of the BA and MA Film Studies course.
