I believe the first is a mistake, provided you take the time and effort to pay attention to why you made the mistake and where you went wrong. The second is discovery, taking ownership of the material or skill and making it your own. This is what I try to teach my students. Example Mental math Strategy = Knowing place value is extremely important to understanding what each number represents. Writing in Math is also a critical skill. Students must be able to put on paper what they were thinking when they solved a problem.
