FITTED with some of themost advanced safetyfeatures so far developed,performance specialistsAMG have created a

Mercedes muscle machine for thegentleman with a bad boy streak.

Costing the best part of £110,000,the S63 AMG is a two-ton limousinewith supercar acceleration of 0-60 in4.5 seconds.

In true AMG fashion, this versionof Mercedes’ flagship saloon is ablend of luxury and maximumperformance.

It also marks the debut of a newV8 engine and some astonishingtechnology.

Blind spot warning devices andlane drift alerts have been aroundfor a couple of years and nowMercedes has taken them to a newlevel by making the devicesinteractive.

Should a driver ignore thewarning buzzers and lights andunintentionally cross a white lineor start to overtake on a motorwaywith a vehicle bearing down frombehind, then the system cuts in tomove the car out of danger.

It works by linking the electronicstability controls into the blind spotand lane change sensors to gentlyapply the brakes to bring the carback on line.

Having tested the systems undercontrolled conditions both areeffective and come into play atspeeds ranging from less than20mph to 125.

Coupled to other features alreadyin use on the S-Class such asemergency sensors which apply thebrakes and arm the airbags andseatbelts if a collision isunavoidable, the S63 is at theforefront of safety.

At the moment the system, whichadds £2,020 to the price, is availableonly on the AMG but eventuallyMercedes plans to make it availableon other models throughout the

range.The same is true of the new5.5-litre V8 engine which is

being launched as a twinturbo in the S63.

REBEL WITH A CAUSE: The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is a muscle machine for the gentleman with a bad boy streak.

current S63 the new engine not onlydevelops more power but is alsomore economical.

Average fuel economy is said tobe 25 per cent better at 26.9mpg andCO2 emissions are some 30 per centlower at 244g/km.

The S63 has a seven speedsemi-automatic gearbox which notonly delivers rapid fire changeseither in manual or auto mode butis fitted with a stop/start functionto boost economy further.

It is also a direct injection engine– the first time AMG has used such

fuel efficient technology.Compared to the current model

with its 344g/km emissions andaverage consumption of less than20mpg on a good day, theimprovements are significant.

Power output is 544bhp – up from518 – yet if anything the new S63 ismore refined.

The raucous performance of thecurrent car is replaced with smoothbut potent acceleration, although itcan still roar like any finely tunedV8 should.

Possibly conscious that the latest

S63 is not as brutish as some of itspredecessors AMG has aperformance pack available whichpumps up the power to 571bhp.

It costs £7,890 but gives the S63 anawesome top speed of 186mph whileshaving the 0-60 time down to 4.4seconds.

As such the S63 is almost in aleague of its own with Ferrari-likeperformance but luxuriousappointments to rival a Bentley.

Yet despite the wonderfulengineering there is nothingoutlandish to the eye. Apart from

the AMG biturbo badging andquad exhausts there is little togiveaway the might of this classyMercedes.

It’s pushing sophistication andtechnology to new limits in a carwhich will be appreciated by thosewho have come to expect the bestfrom AMG.

Fuel efficiency is now at theforefront of the AMG ethos and thehand-built engine used in the S63demonstrates how performance canbe maintained while pushingeconomy to new levels.

SMART is certainly theword for the fortwo cdi –and it means considerablymore than just a neat suitof clothes.

Not content with being theworld’s most economical productioncar, the makers of this efficiencymarvel refused to rest on theirlaurels.

Springtime saw the bar raisedagain with CO2 emissions down to ahealthy 86g/km to go with the sortof fuel consumption – an average85.6mpg - that makes filling stationowners grind their teeth.

That’s on top of performanceupgrades that have boosted powerby 21%, torque by 18% and cut the0-62mph sprint by three seconds.

And according to smart, it meansboth coupe and cabrio variants ofthe fortwo cdi benefit fromimproved ride and handling,excellent safety credentials, betterhead and shoulder room to go with

comfier seats and a betterventilation system.

It’s a couple of years since I lastdrove a smart and can concur thatgreat strides have been made. WhatI really like about this car apartfrom the economy figures is thefeelgood factor you get merely fromsitting in the cabin.

Everything looks freshlydesigned and funky with fleckedfabric door inserts, a leathersteering wheel with aluminiumcentrepiece and instrument podsmounted atop the dash.

But the biggest difference

concerns the transmission. Thethree-cylinder diesel engine workswith an automated five-speedmanual gearbox operated either bytapping the shift lever on the centreconsole or using the optional paddleshifts on the steering wheel.

The beauty of it is that there’salso a kick-down function activatedwith the throttle pedal which letsthe driver change down by one ortwo gears and make better use ofthe engine’s low-speed torque.

The tested model, in top specpassion trim, also has a fullyautomatic mode. It’s convenient forthose who don’t want to be botheredwith the shifts but too lurchy foreveryday use.

You can drive long distances inthe smart cdi and it cruises wellonce you get up to speed, but itsnatural habitat is city andsuburban where that ability tosqueeze into tight spaces – you canpractically park the thing on your

front doorstep – is so valuable.On the down side the car’s ride

quality is way too firm.While stowage space is obviously

quite limited, smart has done adecent job in maximising space –there are recesses either side of thesteering wheel, a glovebox,net-sided door bins and another

netted area behind the seats.The engine and gearbox sit

behind the driver so there’s just asmall front luggage compartment,and for rear stowage a buttonreleases the glass windscreen, thenyou press a button at either side ofthe main tailgate to release anddrop it down.

Ford shifts up thepowerwith efficient new transmissionFORD has tripled theavailability of its fuel efficientPowerShift transmission,extending the slick self-shifterto six different models.

PowerShift is a six-speeddual-clutch transmission,combining the performanceand fuel-efficiency of amanual gearbox with theease and convenience of aconventional automatic.

Originally launched in the

Ford Focus and C-MAX, thetransmission is now alsoavailable on the Kuga,Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy.

In the case of the lattertrio, PowerShift is fitted asstandard to the new 2.0-litreEcoBoost petrol engine,while on these three modelsplus the Kuga, Focus andC-MAX, it can also bespecified with the 2.0-litreDuratorq diesel engine, with

resulting CO2 emissions aslow as 149g/km.

“We are excited to extendthe benefits of the PowerShifttransmission to a muchbroader range of cars andengines within Ford’sline-up,” said Pat Oldani,Ford’s automatictransmission manager.

Drivers have the option ofusing a full automatic mode,a sport automatic mode or

selecting gears manually. Insport mode, the transmissionoffes more dynamicperformance, while manualmode allows the driver toenjoy quick gearchanges bymoving the shift leverforwards or backwards.
