manufacturerthat truly lives upto its slogan of‘the Power toSurprise’ it’sKorean car makerKia.

The company iscelebrating 20years of UK sales,which startedback in 1991 withjust a singlemodel, the littlePride that wenton to find 1,786homes in itsdebut year.

Since then thefirm hasexpanded tobecome a majorglobal player,selling in excess oftwo millionvehicles.

And just afortnight after thebrand’s latest citycar the newPicanto hit thestreets, Kia hasrecorded its bestever year inBritain with56,114 vehiclessold during 2010.

There are also twoperformance engines whichdon’t feature in the C4 – a200bhp turbo petrol and a163bhp diesel.

We have just tried both andthe pair is nicely potent while,in the case of the petrolversion, there is a touch ofvenom.

Using all of its boost theDS4 THP 200 has a 0 to 60 timeof 8.5 seconds topping out at146mph yet with masses oftorque from just 1,700 revs itflies through the gears.

The figures aren’t true hothatch but on the road theexperience is a different story.

And while the diesel is noslouch, its power comes to thefore later in the rev band andperhaps that makes it thebetter of the two for cruising.

It uses Citroen’s two-litreHDi engine tuned to deliver atop speed of 132mph with 0 to60 taking 9.3 seconds.

The real benefit of the dieselis the added fuel economy,averaging 55.4 to the galloncompared to 44.1 for the petrol

– both impressive figurestaking performance intoaccount.

Emissions come in at134g/km for the diesel and 149on the THP putting both intothe 19 per cent tax band forbusiness users.

The DS4 entry level modelis the 1.6-litre VTi 120 inDSign trim which includesstability and traction controls,air conditioning and cruisecontrol.

The higher powered enginesare available in mid-rangeDStyle models priced from£22,950 in the case of thediesels but the THP 200 is therange topper and can be hadonly in DSport finish from£23,950 for a six speed manual.

All versions have LEDrunning lights on the noseproducing a very distinctivesignature on the road.

The car is styled to impresswith striking body lines.

It is much more coupe likethan the C4, the body taller

and a diffuser sits nicelybelow the rear bumper.

Although a five door therear doors are almost invisiblewith concealed latch andblended shut lines whichemphasise the overallsleekness.

Legroom in the rear is notover generous but the DS4 willseat five and the boot spaceranges from 385 to 1,021 litres– slightly less if you go for theuprated Denon sound systemwhich has a large woofer boxin the luggage compartment.

Onboard, theinstrumentation is utterly

modern and the steeringwheel – although quite busywith plenty of buttons for theentertainment, cruise control,trip computer and phone – hasa flattened bottom adding alittle extra street cred.

Electric parking brakes arestandard on DStyle andDSport models and so are LEDambient interior lights,Bluetooth connectivity andthere’s even a massagingfunction on the front seats.

The DSport model we drovewas also fitted with a parkinggap sensor which identifiesspaces big enough to complete

the manoeuvre – and warns ifthey are not.

However something musthave got lost in the translationon the software whichproduced the message ‘Choiceof the side by the directionindicator’ when it wasengaged.

That is possibly the onlygripe in a car whichrealistically is packed withfeelgood factors ranging fromthe ability to change tobacklight colour of theinstruments to a panoramicwindscreen which delivers atremendous field of viewhelped by a slightly higherthan normal driving position.

On the road the DS4 isdefinitely a car for theenthusiast with thesuspension certainly on thesporty side when it comes tofirmness and response.

Citroen is making greatplay that the DS range is fordrivers who do not want toconform to any stereotype of acar and the option list for theDS4 enables it to beconfigured quite intimately.

BusinessasunusualBMW has the important UK

business market in mindwith the arrival of a new520d EfficientDynamicssaloon model in

September.The car is approximately 10 per

cent more fuel-efficient, says theGerman manufacturer, than thebest of its rivals, without reducingthe 184bhp or 380Nm of torquedeveloped by the 2.0-litreturbodiesel engine.

It costs from £30,435 and boastsfuel economy of 62.8mpg and CO2emissions of 119g/km, which meansa company car benefit-in-kindtaxation band of only 13 per cent.

In addition to the standardStart-Stop, optimum gearshiftindicator, brake energyregeneration and activeaerodynamics, the 520dEfficientDynamics saloon has alonger final drive ratio to reduceengine revs at highway speeds, andlow rolling resistance tyres.

It also comes with BMW’s newECO-PRO mode which promotesmore economical and comfortabledriving at low speeds by adjustingthe engine mapping, throttlesensitivity and automatic gearshiftpoints.

The latest BMW range featuresbetter economy and increased kit

across the line-up and in the case ofthe Z4 roadster there will be twonew engines as well.

An all-aluminium 2.0-litretwin-turbo unit in two guises willappear in sDrive20i and sDrive28iversions of the Z4.

For the sDrive20i, the new enginedevelops 184bhp while the sDrive28iboasts 245bhp and both engines useEfficientDynamics technology tolower fuel consumption andemissions.

Standard equipment will beenhanced across the Z4 range, withall models now receiving Bluetoothand USB audio interface and a freshequipment package called DesignPure Balance will feature extendedMerino leather, anthracite woodand sports seats.

BMW’s green credentialscontinue to increase too, with theX1 xDrive20d EfficientDynamicsbecoming the cleanest and mosteconomical BMW X product ever.

Powered by a 163bhp 2.0-litrefour-cylinder diesel engine with acombined fuel consumption of62.8mpg, CO2 emissions drop to119g/km, meaning a company cartaxation band of 13 per cent. Priceswill be from £25,715.

The 5 Series engine range isexpanding to 11 derivatives with thearrival of the 520i and 528i modelsfor September, both powered by anew 2.0-litre petrol engine. The 520iSE saloon costs from £31,190 - £1,512cheaper than the model it replaces –while the Touring is £33,615. The528i SE saloon is from £33,610 and

Touring £36,165.Drive Performance Control,

which allows the driver to fine-tunethe ride and handling selectingeither Comfort, Sport or Sport+settings, will also be fitted to allvariants with ECO PRO mode.

A new special edition offeringenhanced equipment will be

available on the BMW 3 Seriescoupe and convertible models whilediesel power will coincide with thelaunch of the new 6 Series coupe inthe shape of a 3.0-litre twin-turbounit producing 313bhp. Prices arefrom £62,080 for the BMW 640dcoupe while the convertible startsat £68,210.

FUNKY style with retrocharm comes oozing fromevery pore of the chic littleFiat 500 – but for thosefleeting moments of summer

sunshine, you really need to feel thebreeze.

That means the 500C forconvertible, though it’s a matter ofopinion whether the roll-back roofof the little Fiat actually constitutesa proper rag-top as opposed to anextended sunroof.

Either way, this is a car thatmakes a statement, and the soft topcertainly looks the part, especiallyin white with the red roof.

Where the Fiat scores is throughits sardine tin-style foldingmechanism which means you canopen the fabric lid in three differentpositions.

The complete operation takes justeight seconds, is fully electric, canbe activated on the move anddoesn’t encroach on luggage space

or interior comfort.Only problem is that it costs an

extra £3,000, which adds 20 per centon to the price of a standard Fiat500.

So you wonder whether it’s worththe pleasure, given that the roofpillars remain in place.

What certainly does representproper value is the 875cc Twin Airpetrol engine featured in the testedversion.

This two-cylinder unit is adownsizer’s delight, and not merelybecause it can return a whopping 70miles to the gallon. It also makes for

fantastic driving fun, accompaniedby a rorty little engine note to boot.

Turbocharging helps the 0-9-litrepowerplant produce 85bhp – andthat’s enough to propel the 500C to62mph in exactly 11 seconds and onto a potential 108mph.

Emissions of just 95g/km meanthat the Twin Air is as clean asmainstream production petrolengines get, making it tax free forprivate buyers and commandingonly a ten per cent benefit in kindlevy for business users.

And in addition to a Start&Stopsystem – which can prove asfrustrating as it is fuel efficient -there’s also an indicator to promptgear changes and a dash-mountedECO button that cuts torque andallows the driver to adopt a stylemore suited to city traffic.

Stick with Normal mode thoughand we’re talking a spirited drivingexperience, with plenty of pullingpower from low revs. But then the

Twin Air has 23 per cent morepower than the 1.2-litre engine fromthe same stable.

Cabin highlights like the oversizewhite steering wheel, billiard ballgearknob, snazzy seat designs andfunky dash all add to the 500C’sappeal. On the down side, rearspace is realistically only sufficient

for kids and the boot is tiny.There’s plenty of standard kit

though, from seven airbags andABS to air-con and body colouredbumpers, and more upmarketLounge trim adds stuff like chromeinserts, rear parking sensors,15-inch alloys and Fiat’s Blue&Mehands-free system with USB port.
