PowerBand® Belts

# of Bands Belt Size

PowerBand® Part Number Nomenclature 2/B144 3 / 5VX1000 4/5V850

PowerBand® belts were developed by Gates for drives subjected to pulsating loads, shock loads or extreme vibrations where single belts could flip over on the pulleys. A high-strength tie band permanently joins two or more belts to provide lateral rigidity and allow all of the strands to work together as one unit. This keeps the belts running in a straight line in the pulley grooves and eliminates jumped, flipped, tangled or separated belts. The tie band also has a self-protective feature that allows potentially damaging debris to penetrate through the top without tearing the bands apart.

Built for lateral rigidity, belts pull together and run in a straight line on drives with pulsating or shock loads for long-lasting operation.

Unique cross cord tie band allows belts to seat in pulley grooves independently but still pull together for powerful performance.

V-Belt to Synchronous Belt Conversion Yields Dramatic Cost Savings in Plant’s HVAC System Operation

Reichhold, Inc. is a global supplier to the composites and coatings industries, with 18 manufacturing facilities in 11 countries. The maintenance technician at the Durham, North Carolina facility approached a representative of Gates Corporation to survey the plant for potential energy savings. During the hot summer months, the plant spent approximately $80k per month in energy costs to operate its equipment. The Gates representative analyzed 21 HVAC units with 30 hp motors, 44 fume hood exhaust fans with 5-10 hp motors and four cooling tower fan drives with 50 hp motors – all V-belt driven.

HVAC UNIT ANALYSIS AND CONVERSION The HVAC drive units were equipped with 4-strand V-belts, which required periodic retensioning and replacement every three months. The V-belt drive was replaced with a 14mm Gates Poly Chain® GT® Carbon™ belt drive, and performance was tracked. Annual KWh usage fell into a range between 10,103 and 10,557 KWh per year, representing a yearly energy cost savings of $505 to $527 per unit. Converting all 21 units represents an energy cost savings of 21 x $505 = $10,608. In addition, the synchronous belt drive will run for years without retensioning or replacement, saving additional downtime and maintenance expense.

COOLING TOWER FAN DRIVE ANALYSIS AND CONVERSION The Reichhold facility also included two 1,320-ton chillers with matching cooling towers. Each cooling tower had two fan drives fitted with V-belts. When one of the fan drives was converted to a 14mm Gates Poly Chain GT Carbon belt drive, the difference in performance was substantial. Estimated yearly cost savings for converting all four fans is $12,595, including reduced downtime and maintenance costs.

EXHAUST FAN DRIVE ANALYSIS AND CONVERSION Although covered, the 44 fume hood exhaust fans on the Reichhold facility rooftop are subject to extreme seasonal temperature changes. 2-strand V-belts must be replaced every three months. The immediate result from conversion to an 8mm Poly Chain GT Carbon belt drive saw a 12.9% reduction in energy consumption. In addition, the annual cost of maintaining each V-belt was $250. Converting all 44 drives represents a maintenance cost savings of $11,000/year, in addition to the lower energy costs.

CONCLUSION The maintenance and energy cost savings achieved by converting V-belt drives to synchronous belt drives at the Reichhold facility totals over $34,000 per year.

Synchronous Belt Drives

Motor Systems Tip Sheet #5 DOE/GO-102012-3740 • November 2012

Replace V-Belts with Notched or Synchronous Belt Drives Approximately one-third of the electric motors in the industrial and commercial sectors use belt drives. Belt drives provide flexibility in the positioning of the motor relative to the load. Pulleys (sheaves) of varying diameters allow the speed of the driven equipment to be increased or decreased relative to the motor speed. A properly designed belt power-transmission system offers high efficiency and low noise, requires no lubrication, and presents low maintenance requirements. However, certain types of belts are more efficient than others, offering potential energy cost savings.

The majority of belt drives use V-belts, which use a trapezoidal cross section to create a wedging action on the pulleys to increase friction and improve the belt’s power transfer capability. Joined or multiple belts are specified for heavy loads. V-belt drives can have a peak efficiency of 95% or more at the time of installation. Efficiency is dependent on pulley size, pulley wear, V-belt alignment, transmitted torque, under or oversizing belts for load requirements. Efficiency can deteriorate by as much as 5% over time if slippage occurs because the belt is not periodically retensioned.

The most important operational and maintenance issue in a V-belt drive is its tension. If belts are too loose, they tend to vibrate, wear rapidly, and waste energy through slippage. If belts are overtightened, they will show excessive wear. An increased belt load may shorten bearing life through excessive lateral loading and could possibly result in shaft failure. The proper tension of a V-belt is the lowest tension at which the belt will not slip at peak-load conditions. After the break-in period, belt tension should be checked every 3 to 6 months.

A notched belt has grooves or notches that run perpendicular to the belt’s length, which reduces the bending resistance of the belt. Notched belts can use the same pulleys as cross-section standard V-belts. They run cooler, last longer, and are about 2% more efficient than standard V-belts.

Synchronous belts (also called cogged, timing, positive-drive, or high-torque drive belts) are toothed and require the installation of mating grooved sprockets. These belts operate with a consistent efficiency of 98% and maintain their efficiency over a wide load range. In contrast, V-belts have a sharp reduction in efficiency at high torque due to increased slippage. Synchronous belts require minimal maintenance and retensioning, operate in wet and oily environments, and run slip-free. However, synchronous belts are noisier than V-belts, less suited for use on shock-loaded applications, and transfer more vibration due to their stiffness.

Example Energy Savings Calculations A continuously operating, 100-horsepower (hp), supply-air fan operates at an average motor load of 75% while consuming 527,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical energy annually.

What are the annual energy and dollar savings if a 95% efficient (η1) V-belt is replaced with a 98% efficient (η2) synchronous belt? Electricity is priced at $0.08/kWh.

Energy Savings = Annual Energy Use x (1 – η1/η2 ) = 527,000 kWh/year x (1 – 95/98) = 16,130 kWh/year Annual Cost Savings = 16,130 kWh x $0.08/kWh = $1,290

Energy Savings Simplified automatic energy optimization (AEO)—continually monitors the motor’s speed

and load and adjusts the applied voltage to maximize energy savings.

Sleep mode—automatically stops or restarts the drive when its speed is outside set levels for a specified time, providing energy savings without separate controllers.

Cost Savings Intelligent HVAC controller—four auto-tuning PIDs control the drive and up to three other

devices, eliminating external controllers and reducing cost.

Built-in HVAC protocols—allow TR200 drives to become an intelligent part of the building management system.

Built-in protection—integrated technology eliminates the need for external protection devices while maximizing the life of the motor and other system components.

Trouble-Free Operation Dual DC-link reactors—non-saturating reactors provide better harmonic performance than a

5% AC line or saturating DC reactors. Automatic high ambient de-rate—if the ambient temperature exceeds the normal limit, the

drive can be set to warn of its over temperature and continue to run, keeping the HVAC system functional. To control its temperature, the drive will reduce the output carrier frequency and, if necessary, reduce the output current.

Easy to Install Compact size—efficient heatsink design significantly reduces the footprint of TR200 Series

drives, particularly in the smaller frame sizes. Run-permissive circuit—the ability to accept a “system ready” signal assures that dampers

or other auxiliary equipment are in the proper state for drive operation. Real-time Clock—adds sophisticated performance to basic control schemes for increased

comfort and energy savings. Plenum rated—all drives and options are UL listed for installation in air handling

compartments.

Easy to Use Simple and flexible menu structure—many installations require nothing more than scrolling

through the twelve “QUICK MENU” items to confirm the default settings. Users can also select up to 20 parameters to be included in a ”PERSONAL MENU” for easy access.

Wholesale Blower Motors Evergreen EM® Constant Torque X13 Motor

All of the Benefits of the Evergreen EM in commercial voltages: Replace/upgrade PSC motors in applications that DO NOT require on/off delays such as Variable Air Volume (VAV), Fan Filter Units (FFU), A/C or heat pump only air handlers or package units. (Refer to installation manual for more details)

ECM Constant Torque Motors SX13® and Selectech® motors have only five speed commands and are programmed based only on torque. The X13® adjusts its speed (High, Medium High, Medium, Medium Low, Low) based on changes to static pressure by only monitoring changes in torque. This “standard ECM” motor is much more efficient than PSC motors, but less efficient when compared to ECM variable speed motors. ECM Constant Torque Motors were previously only available through OEM until now.
