Rulmeca Motorized Pulleys: a new name with deep rootsThe Rulmeca Motorized Pulleys presented in this catalogue have a long history to tell.It goes back to the 1950’s, when the product was developed in Germany and Denmark.Eventually, through a merging process the German Förder- und Antriebstechnik Aschersleben GmbH and the Danish John KirkegaardMaskinfabrik A/S became partners of the Interroll Group.From the early 1990’s the manufacturing of all Interroll’s BULK Motorized Pulleys were centralised in Aschersleben, Germany.In July 2003 the production facility in Aschersleben, Germany, where Motorized Pulleys have been developed and produced for almosthalf a century, was purchased by Rulli Rulmeca Spa Italy, along with the entire BULK Business Unit.It is from this plant, today renamed RULMECA GERMANY GmbH, that the JOKI, EGT and INTERROLL traditions for quality and relia-bility will be continued under the RULMECA brand.It is thanks to this long history that Rulmeca can be ranked as a very experienced manufacturer of BULK Motorized Pulleys offering theworld largest product range.

Features and Benefits of Rulmeca Motorized PulleysPurpose-built designThe Rulmeca Motorized Pulley has beenspecifically designed for belt conveyors.

Totally enclosedThe motor, gearbox and bearings are total-ly enclosed and sealed inside a steel shell;therefore they are unlikely to fail due toharmful environmental conditions such aswater, dust, grit chemicals, grease, oil, etc.

Space saving designBecause the drive unit and the bearingsaremounted inside the Motorized Pulley shell,it takes up much less room than a conven-tional drive. No need for costly extras likechains, v-belts, couplings, bearings, sup-port structure and special guarding.

SafetyThe Rulmeca Motorized Pulley is probablyone of the safest drives available becausethe motor is completely enclosed and theexternal shafts are always stationary. Theonly moving external parts are theMotorized Pulley shell and bearing hous-ings.

Low purchasing and installation costThe Rulmeca Motorized Pulley is quiteoften less expensive than exposed drivesbecause it has fewer parts.Therefore less conveyor design and partspurchasing costs. It is also much quickerand easier to install - certainly less than aquarter of the time taken to fit an exposedsystem.

Low maintenance costThe end user also benefits from the RulmecaMotorized Pulley, because it requires nomaintenance other than the recommendedoil change every 10,000 hours and oil sealchange every 30,000 hours. In other wordsalmost 5 years between oil changes basedon an 8- hour/day working week. Syntheticoil can be specified to extend the servicerange up to 30,000 hours.

EfficiencyThe Rulmeca Motorized Pulley usually hasa much higher efficiency from electricalmotor to shell (Pulley face) than conven-tional drives, because it has fewer frictionallosses, and therefore efficiencies of up to97% can be achieved.

CleanlinessBecause the Rulmeca Motorized Pulley ishermetically sealed it cannot contaminateany conveying materials such as food,electrical components, plastics and othermaterials that must be kept perfectly cleanduring handling.

Aesthetic appearanceIf installed correctly the RulmecaMotorized Pulley always looks good. Dueto its compact size and smooth lines,quite often the Motorized Pulley is out ofsight, because it is hidden within the con-veyor frame.

Thermal protectionAll three phase Rulmeca Motorized Pulleysare protected by our thermal protection

switch. This heat sensitive switch is built intothe motor windings to protect the motor fromoverheating. The thermal protector must beconnected to a normally closed circuit.

Weight saving and distributionOften the Rulmeca Motorized Pulley islighter than conventional drives and oftenit is possible to reduce the cost of theconveyor structure, because the weight isevenly distributed within the conveyorframe.

Variable frequency converterAll Rulmeca Motorized Pulleys with 3 phasemotors are easily controlled by variablefrequency converters working in the 15 Hzto 65 Hz frequency range. See TechnicalPrecautions in the catalogue.

Fewer partsA Rulmeca Motorized Pulley consists of theMotorized Pulley and two fixing brackets!Exposed drives can require up to eight ormore separate components, most of whichhave to be purchased from different suppli-ers or custom manufactured.

Therefore, it is important to notice thedifferences to choose the right type ofpulley for the right application based onestimated belt tension (radial load) =T1+T2. The actual radial load MUST beLESS than the max. allowable radial loadshown in this catalogue.

Be aware of increased belt tensions usingmulti-ply thick heavy belts and/or largerbelt widths.

If you do not find the belt tension neededin the wanted diameter, you might have tochoose a larger one.
