Motion and Energy
Motion- An object is in Motion when ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Reference point - A place or object that can be used to determine if an object is in motion
Motion and Energy
Motion- An object is in Motion whena place or object that can be used
to determine if an object is in motion.
Examples of Newton’s 1st Law:
* a marble will not move unless forced.
* once a marble is moving, it doesn’t stop until forced to!
* if you don’t wear your seatbelt, youhave no force to stop you whenthe car crashes!
since you keep moving, you fly throughthe windshield! (and DIE)

Speed=_____________________________

Motion and Energy
Speed = Distance divided by Time
Motion and Energy
Velocity - ____________________________________________________
Motion and Energy
Velocity –The speed of an object moving in a
particular direction
Motion and Energy
Velocity –The velocity of the airplane is
defined by both its direction and speed.
Motion and Energy
Velocity –The rate at which the velocity of an
object changes is called acceleration.
That means that an object is accelerating whenever it speeds
up, slows down or changes direction.
Motion and EnergyA Force is a push or pull.
Unbalanced Force acting on an object will change the object’s
motion. Equal forces that act on an object
in opposite directions are called Balanced Forces.
Motion and EnergyNewton’s Laws of Motion
First law Motion- ____________________________________________________
Motion and EnergyNewton’s Laws of Motion
First law Motion- objects at rest stay at rest unless a
force acts upon it.
In two unbalanced forces, friction, air resistance, slow it down.
Motion and Energy__________ measures an object’s
tendency to remain at rest or keep moving. Inertia is related
to mass.
Motion and EnergyInertia measures an object’s
tendency to remain at rest or keep moving. Inertia is related
to mass.
Motion and EnergyNewton’s Second Law -
____________________________________________________
Motion and EnergyNewton’s Second Law –
The net force on an object is equal to the mass of the object
multiplied by it’s acceleration.
Motion and EnergyForce = Mass x Acceleration
Weight and mass are not the same thing. Weight changes when the acceleration due to
gravity changes.
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion:
Force = mass X acceleration
This means that the magnitude ofthe force is decided by howbig and heavy an object is,and how fast it is moving!
x=
This makes sense:big, heavy objects have a lot of force.
An elephant doesn’t have to move fast!
Small objects can have a lot of force if they are moving FAST.
-a bullet thrown by hand does nothing, but shot at high speed it can kill!
* Things dropped from a moving vehicle don’t fall straight down!
* they keep moving forward untilanother force stops them!

Motion and EnergyThird Law of Motion –
for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion:
For every action, there is an equal
and opposite reaction.
Translation: If you push,
you also get pushed back!
This is why we are able to jump--
when we push the ground, it pushes back!
Motion and EnergyUsing the second law equation, the object with the larger mass
has the smaller ________________________
if the same force is applied.
