Key Dates, Term 2
Dear Parents, Children and Friends,
MOTHERS’ DAY
There's no mistaking the tenderness and
the beauty of the love in a mother's face.
A mother’s love is unconditional, patient
and forgiving and seems to encompass
everything. (Though I must admit I'm sure
we all have our moments....especially when
we're stretched to our limits!). I'm sure if
you're anything like me you know that
no one in the world can take the place of
your mother....even if there are times we
don't want to admit it.
"No Love like a Mother's Love!"
There is no love like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth...
like the precious bond that comes from
God,
to a mother, when she gives birth
A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all time...
and when her children need her most,
a mother's love will shine.
God bless these special mothers,
God bless them every one...
for all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they've done.
When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on...
through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.
Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love...
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.
Loving God,
We thank you for mothers – for all they
mean or have meant, for the love they
have shown and the care they have given.
We thank you for the qualities of mothers
–their patience, their kindness, concern
and understanding. We thank you for the
part they play in our lives, we thank you
for this day of saying ‘thank you’ and this
opportunity to say what we so often mean
to say, but so rarely do.
MOTHERS’ DAY LITURGY &
MOTHERS’ DAY STALL
Our Mothers’ Day Liturgy will be held this
Friday at All Hallows from 9.30am
I encourage all mothers and grandmothers
to attend our thanksgiving celebration
where we recognise the immeasurable
contribution our mothers and
grandmothers make to our lives. Our
liturgy will be followed by a morning tea
held in the Kamballie Grandstand to honour
our mothers and grandmothers. Please
RSVP, via the attached newsletter slip
by this Wednesday. I look forward to
seeing you all there.
Our annual Mothers’ Day Stall takes place
on Thursday after recess. The P&F have
been busily planning the stall and purchasing
gifts that will be for sale on the day. Gifts
range from $1.00 - $5.00 each.
YOU CAN DO IT CONFIDENCE
WORKSHOP
We had a great turn out of thirty two
parents to our You Can Do It Confidence
Workshop held last evening. The workshop
was very interactive and focused on defining
confidence, gave practical examples on how
to praise confident behaviour in children
and how parents can assist their children to
develop a positive mindset and foster
positive “self talk.” I would like to
acknowledge the incredible work of Miss
Eastman and Miss Britt for planning and
facilitating the workshop, as well as those
staff who attended and offered assistance
during the workshop and in the crèche.
1:1 IPAD PARENT & STUDENT
WORKSHOP THIS WEDNESDAY
Our next 1:1 iPad Parent & Student
Workshop takes place this Wednesday
from 5pm - 6pm in the Year Four
classroom. These sessions are very
interactive and are an excellent way to
experience the high quality learning
that occurs in our Years 4-6 classrooms on
a daily basis. Unfortunately, there are
currently only two families registered to
attend and the afternoon is in jeopardy of
being cancelled. If you are planning on
attending, please RSVP tomorrow by
9am.

YEAR SIX CAMP
Mr Shaw, Mrs Houston and the Year Six children are
busily preparing for their school camp next week at
Ern Halliday in Hillary’s. School camp is an exciting
time for our students and memories on camp often
last a lifetime. On behalf of the staff and students of
St Joseph’s, I would like to wish our students a
wonderful time with much joy, laughter and sleep!
NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM –
LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN)
TESTING.
Next week, students in Year Three and Year Five will
sit for various NAPLAN tests from Tuesday 12th May
until Thursday 14th May. The tests will be Language
Conventions and Spelling plus Writing on 12th May,
Reading on 13th May and finally Numeracy on 14th
May. It is very important that students attend school
on these days and I would ask parents to please make
certain that there are no dentist, doctor or other
appointments at this time.
While NAPLAN does not measure everything that is
important about a student’s literacy and numeracy
development, it does provide each school with
valuable data and every school is expected to pay
close attention to trends over a number of years.
As parents, you can help your child to do their very
best by following these suggestions:
Make certain that your child is well rested and
gets at least 10 hours of sleep a night during the
testing period.
Ensure your child has a good breakfast every
day so they can concentrate fully.
Provide your children with healthy snacks in
their lunchbox to further aid concentration.
Ensure your child gets a healthy daily dose of
exercise during the assessment period. This will
assist to reenergise your child, as well as release
any anxiety they are experiencing.
Try not to make a big deal of the test. Children
who are anxious and worried about the
assessment will not perform to their potential.
Encourage your child to do their best.
Please find attached an article to further support you
and your child titled “Helping students get ready for
the NAPLAN tests.”
P&F MEETING
Our next P&F Meeting takes place on Monday at 2pm
in order to accommodate parents who have
previously found it difficult to attend the 9am meeting.
Attending a P&F Meeting is one way you can be
actively involved in the decision making process of the
school, contribute to the success of our school and
work collaboratively to provide our student with the
best experiences and facilities possible. I look forward to
seeing some new faces at this new meeting time.
Upcoming Events:
6 May: iPad Parent & Child Workshop
Years 4-6
7 May: Mothers’ Day Stall
8 May: Mothers’ Day Liturgy & Morning Tea
at 9am
11 May: Year Six Camp
12-14 May: NAPLAN Testing
Finally, to all of our mothers and grandmothers, I hope
that Sunday is filled with love and happiness for you and
your families – Happy Mother’s Day!
May God bless our school and those within it.

Principal
NAPLAN
On Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May,
students in Years Three and Five will sit their NAPLAN
tests. Skills that will be tested include reading, writing,
spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.
These tests are completed here at school and are
considered just another part of the curriculum. It is
important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN
is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level
students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against
National Standards and compared with student peers
throughout Australia.
NAPLAN cannot be studied for and students are not
expected to do so. The best way you can help your child
prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is just
a routine part of their school program, and to urge
them to do the best they can on the day.
All students in Years Three and Five are expected to
participate in NAPLAN testing.
Later in the year we will send parents an individual
student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and
monitor how your child is progressing.
Please find below details of when the tests will be
carried out for children in Years Three and Five. It
should be noted that all testing will take place prior to
lunch. The last day of the week is being reserved in the
event that some children may be absent on one or more
of the scheduled days of testing.

THE MONTH OF MAY
Within the cycle of a year, the Church unfolds the whole
of the mystery of Christ, from his incarnation and birth
until his ascension, the day of Pentecost, and the
expectation of blessed hope and of the Lord’s return.
In celebrating this annual cycle of Christ’s mysteries, the
Church honours with special love Mary, the Mother of
God, who is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving
work of her Son. In her the Church holds up and
admires the most excellent effect of the redemption and
joyfully contemplates, as in a flawless image, that which
the Church itself desires and hopes wholly to be.
FIRST COMMUNION-EUCHARIST
We will be holding a parent and candidate workshop at
school on Thursday 21st May for all those children
that will be taking part in the sacrament of Eucharist this
year. The workshop is in the Wittenoom Library and
starts at 6.00 pm.
MOTHERS’ DAY LITURGY
This Friday 8th May we celebrate Mothers’ Day with a
Liturgy in the church at 9.30 am. This is followed by a
morning tea in the Kamballie Grandstand. Please join us
for this celebration.

A Prayer for Mothers
All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for
mothers young and old.
We pray for young mothers, who give life and count
toes and tend to our every need;
May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to
care for their families and themselves with great joy.
We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and
cared for us;
May they continue to guide in strong and gentle ways.
We remember mothers who are separated from their
children because of war, poverty, or conflict;
May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes
every tear away.
We pray for women who are not mothers but still love
and shape us with motherly care and compassion.
We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-
grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live
forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.
Amen.
This Sunday is Mothers’ Day and a day we honour and
give thanks to our mothers and mother figures alike.
Let us also remember to honour our blessed Mother
Mary, just as God honoured her to be the mother of
Jesus.

Sports Stars
We had a shorter week in sport last week due to the
public holiday and so I will be choosing Sports Stars and
Sports Champion at the end of this week .
In sport this week....
On Tuesday we continued with our Auskick skills and
practiced on the oval to develop the skills we are learning
for our age group. In Junior Primary we practiced
crouching and using our hands to pick up the ball
correctly from a stationary position. We are making sure
to bend our knees, extend our arms with fingers
stretched out to pick up ball cleanly with both hands. We
also practiced stepping and kicking. In Senior Primary, we
developed our hitting skills by practicing handballing. We
had fun at practising it in relay type games and then by
playing a modified game where we could only use the
handball to pass and score. Seniors also had an
introduction to cross country and started to practice
running around the oval. This year, Years Three to Five
students will be required to run 1.5km and Year Six
students will complete 2km.
On Friday the Faction Captains, Mrs Swann and myself
attended a very fun and exciting 'JUMP JAM' training
session at South Kalgoorlie Primary School. Along with
students from other schools, we got to learn fun
choreography to some well known children's song,
including 'We like to move it move it!' as well as how to
be 'JUMP JAM' leaders on stage. We are now looking to
see how we can implement these new skills in to
structured play sessions at school and future class
sessions. The Year One class had the chance to have a
demonstration lesson from the House Captains and
course tutor, Brett Fairweather, as part of their P.E
lesson on Monday. They had great fun doing the 'MOVE
IT MOVE IT' dance.
Sporting events...
Well done to St Joseph's Basketball team who played in
the GIANTS School Basketball Competition. Last week
we played O'Connor Primary School with the end result
being 18-13. Despite the loss, we put up a good game and
all had some game time on court and showed great
sportsmanship. There will be a match this coming
Saturday 9th at 6:15pm. Therefore, team practices will be
held Tuesday lunchtime and Friday after school
from 3:00-3:30pm. Thank you to all those who came to
support us.
Coming soon in Week 4…
Kilometre Club for Years Three to Six.
Students are invited to take part in a fun competition
where they can accrue ‘kilometres’ by completing before
and after school cross country laps. The more times they
run, the more kilometres they will get! The highest
number of kilometres accumulated before cross country
week will receive a special certificate and prize! The
sessions will start in week 4 on Monday mornings from
8am - 8:20am and Tuesday afternoons from 3pm -
3:30pm after school. Students need to wear their sports
uniform and bring a water bottle.
Other sports information....
Please ensure your child wears the correct sports
uniform for their sports session. Recently, some children
have turned up without hats and have therefore been
unable to participate due to our NO hat, NO sun policy.
Children also need to wear the correct footwear for
these sessions, as agreed in the school’s uniform policy.
Thank you for your support with this.
Sports Dates to remember:
Cross Country -10th June
Winter Lightening Carnival -19th June
Parents are always welcome to come and help with
sports sessions. We would be thrilled if any parent
wished to share their knowledge and skills with the
students. Please contact me if you are interested in
volunteering.

We have a limited number of New Balance Sports
Shoes available in the Uniform Shop. Be sure to
call in and grab a bargain before they sell out.
Smaller size hats are back in stock ($13)
We are offering our size 6 woollen jumpers at a
reduced price of $40. These are a small fit (not a
regular size 6) but would be a great option as a
backup for Year 1 students, particularly if you have
younger siblings to pass it on to. Pre-primary
parents may also be interested in purchasing these
jumpers for children entering Year 1 in 2016.
Uniform Shop hours are Tuesday 8:15-9:00am and

YEAR 5 NEWS
In Year Five, we applied the technology process of investigating, devising, producing and evaluating to create 3D
model zoo enclosures. We began the task by choosing a species of animal, insect or reptile. We researched how
the species survives in its natural habitat and how it is housed in various zoos around the world. We then planned
our 3D model zoo enclosure and brought in 'found' materials from home, such as shoeboxes and cotton wool. We
had to ensure that when making our enclosures that we used the materials and other equipment safely.
Here are a few photographs of some of the 3D model zoo enclosures that we created.

COMMUNITY NEWS
CONFIDENCE Confident young children are not afraid to make mistakes when learning
something new. They believe that they will be successful if they try hard.
They only ask for their parent’s or teacher’s help when they have tried
their very best. Confident young children are not afraid to meet new
classmates. They expect to be liked and make friends.
When someone wants them to do something they don’t want to do (i.e. break a rule), confident children tell
them nicely what they want to do. Confident young children make themselves big and tall and speak in a voice
that everyone can hear but is not too loud or yelling.
EXAMPLES OF CONFIDENT BEHAVIOUR IN CHILDREN
1. Chooses to participate in a new activity with new friends.
2. Shares what happened during the day with his/her parents, clearly outlining the events.
3. Introduces himself/herself to someone new.
4. Speaks loudly enough so people can hear them clearly.
5. Does a new activity without first asking for help.
6. Participate in all class activities without worrying about what others may think.
WAYS TO PRAISE YOUR CHILD FOR CONFIDENT BEHAVIOUR
• “That took confidence.”
• “You were brave to do that all by yourself.”
• “Good for you. You were not afraid of trying something new.”
• “You see, we all make mistakes when we are learning something new.”
TEACH YOUR CHILD THE FOLLOWING CONFIDENT THINKING
o ACCEPTING MYSELF: I am likeable and good at doing many things.
o TAKING RISKS: It is ok to make mistakes when learning something new or practising.
o BEING INDEPENDENT: It is good for me to try new activities by myself and its ok to ask for help if I
need it.
PRACTICAL THINGS YOU CAN DO TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN YOUR CHILD • Give your child a special responsibility (setting the table, taking out rubbish).
• Ask your child questions you know he/she can answer.
• Set aside time each day for your child to demonstrate what he/she has learned at school.
• Help your child to identify and develop individual interests and talents.
• Do not give your child too much attention when he/she expresses negative feelings about school work.
• Encourage your child to speak clearly when asked a question.
• Praise your child for doing something new.
• Praise your child for completing homework/ assignments on time.
