Honor thy Mother: A Lesson For Mother’s Day By Lara Goold

Materials needed: Scriptures, picture(s) of mom with one of the children as a baby, pen and paper, die and small objects

for game pieces (for “What Makes Mom Happy”)

Preparation: Give this lesson to the kids or to Dad to teach.

Purpose: Teach family members to honor their mother for Mother’s Day and every day.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 9:22

Exodus 20:12

Opening Songs:“Quickly I’ll Obey”, Children’s Songbook, page 197

“Mother, I Love You”, Children’s Songbook, page 207

Opening song and prayer:

Lesson: Display a picture of mom with one of the children as a baby (ideally you could have pictures of each of

the children with mom as a baby, but one is enough if that’s all you can find)

Discuss: Ooh and aah over how cute and little they were as babies. Talk to them about how as babies

they couldn’t walk or talk, and that they were totally dependent on their mom to do everything for them.

Talk about how hard it can be to take care of babies and children, but that mom does it happily because

she loves us so much.

“Hats Off to Mother” story with visuals: Read the enclosed story with accompanying visuals. Put the

different hats on the mother puppet as you read (or if you want you could find real hats and put them on

your own mother as you talk about the story)

Discuss: Talk about specific instances of mom wearing her different “hats”(Remember when you got hurt

and mommy gave you a kiss and put on a bandaid…). Take this opportunity to really emphasize all that

our moms do for us and how meaningful that is.

Lead the discussion into finding ways that we can show our love and respect for mom for Mother’s Day

(don’t focus on the everyday respect yet). Write down their ideas. Get mom’s feedback about which

ideas make her excited.

Next discuss about how it is good to show love and honor to mother on Mother’s Day, but that we should

also honor her every day of our lives.

Briefly retell the story of Helaman’s 2000 warriors (summary and visuals included) and talk about how

they showed honor to their mothers by remembering what they’d been taught and living righteously.

Ask for further ideas of ways that they can honor mother and show appreciation for all that she does on

a daily basis. Write down these ideas and be sure to get mom’s feedback too.


Enrichment: Based on your family’s ages and attention spans, pick one or more of the following Enrichment ideas to

add meaning to your lesson. Enrichment activities can also be done at other times during the week if time

does not allow for it on FHE night.

“Make Mom Happy” Game—you will need to gather a die and a variety of small objects to use as game

pieces (coins, buttons, etc) The directions are on the game board. Kids should have fun learning about

what makes mom happy (and unhappy).

Make a coupon book for mom (see below for template) and fill it with special “gifts” of service and time

that you can give to her

Special Flower Bouquet: Write down reasons why you love mom onto flower shapes cut out of

construction paper, attach straws to each flower for a stem, and place in a vase or tie together with ribbon.

Present Mom with a flower bouquet full of loving words.

Pamper Mom—Bring mom a pillow and blanket. Have her lie on the couch and put her feet up. Rub her

feet with lotion. Bring her snacks and let her read a book.

Acrostic poem: Using the letters of your mom’s name make her a special poem

(R—really thoughtful and nice, O—obedient to all of God’s commandments, S—sometimes silly,

sometimes serious, E—eager and energetic)

“What do you know about your mother?” questionnaire: Older kids try to answer as many questions

about their mother as possible. If your kids take competition well, you could make it a contest to see who

gets the most right. If that would make things too contentious, then have them fill it out, then have mom

share the actual answers without focusing on who got it right or wrong.

Buttermilk Pecan Waffles (for making mom breakfast in bed)

2 cups flour (I used half white, half whole wheat)

1 Tbs. baking powder

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

4 eggs

2 cups buttermilk

1/2 cup butter, melted ( I reduced it to 1/3 cup)

3 Tbs. chopped pecans

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat eggs until light. Add

buttermilk; mix well. Add dry ingredients and beat until batter is smooth. Stir in butter.

Pour about 3/4 cup batter onto a lightly greased preheated waffle iron. Sprinkle with a few pecans (if desired).

Bake according to manufacturer's directions until golden brown. Repeat until batter and pecans are gone. Serve

hot with fresh fruit and syrup and a big glass of orange juice. Make about 7 waffles. Don’t forget to clean up

your mess!

Triple Chocolate Cake (easy and good) from http://recipeshoebox.blogspot.com

1 chocolate cake mix (dry)

1-3/4 cups milk or water (I prefer milk)

1 pkg. (4-oz.) chocolate pudding mix

2 eggs

1 pkg. (12-oz.) chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour 9 or 10-inch bundt pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes,

then invert onto serving plate. You may need to loosen the edges with a knife prior to removing from pan.

Sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar. Voila...easy, moist, delicious, beautiful chocolate goodness. Enjoy and

don’t forget to clean up your mess!

My mother’s job is sometimes hard, and I have heard her say,

“The hours are long and if I could I’d change the pay.”

Her profession has variety and I will tell you now

About the many hats she wears and why, when, and how.

Hats off to Mother—place a small slit in the center at the hairline, just the right width for inserting the tabs at the

base of the hats.


“Chapter 34: Helaman and the 2,000 Young Warriors,” Book of Mormon Stories, 93

The people of Ammon had promised God

that they would never fight again. They lived

near the Nephites, and the Nephites

protected them.

When enemies of the people of Ammon

attacked the Nephites, the people of

Ammon wanted to break their promise and

help the Nephites fight.

Helaman and the other Nephite leaders did

not want the people of Ammon to break

their promise to God.

The young sons of the people of Ammon

had not made the promise. They wanted to

help the Nephite army fight for freedom.

Two thousand of these young men chose to

defend their country. They asked Helaman

to be their leader.


They fought bravely and helped drive the

enemy away. After the battle Helaman

found that all his sons had been hurt but not

one had been killed.

These young men were valiant, brave, and

strong. They were also honest and

trustworthy, and they kept the

commandments of God.

It was a miracle. Helaman was very happy.

He knew that these young men had been

protected because of their great faith in

God.

Helaman led his 2,000 young warriors into

battle. He called them his sons…

Although the sons of Helaman had never

fought, they were not afraid. Their mothers

had taught them to have faith in God and to

know that he would help them.
