Babies learn to trust their par- ents over time. When the infant cries because he is hungry and you feed him, he learns that you will be there to address his needs. The same can be said for stepchildren. Over time stepchildren can learn to bond with their stepparent... it just requires a little patience. Bonding in blended families gen- erally depends on the age of the children. Younger children tend to take to new situations easier than older children. Therefore, if you’ve recently become the step- parent to a young child, through consistent support and care, you may quickly find the child trusts you and looks to you as simply another parent. Older children can be more dif- ficult to win over. It could take considerable time before your stepchild is willing to develop a relationship with you. Older kids have more intense feelings and understand relationships more deeply than their younger counter- parts. Therefore they could be seeking out the “who” and the “why” of the situation. They also may be holding out hope that their parents will be getting back together. Older children also could be influenced by their other parent. If divorced couples are not suppor- tive of their exes remarrying, their biases could trickle down to their children. Bonding takes great patience and perseverance. More than 200 bags of trash were collected, leaves were raked, weeds were cleared and annuals and flowers were planted at Prospect Street School, Linden Park and along streets.
