GOSPEL MEDITATION

As we go about our days, we necessarily label, classi-fy, and prioritize. What's "in" and what's "out" on our priority list? Because humans are social beings, we tend to do the same thing with people. We can only invite six people to the dinner party. Our young child wants to invite certain friends to her birthday, but we're keenly aware of who the parents are, and the prospect of spending several hours with them is enough to give us pause.

In today's Gospel, Jesus' disciples face a classification problem. They've seen another person driving out demons in the name of Jesus. They recognize him, a non-Apostle, as clearly "out." And yet "Jesus replied, 'Do not prevent him ? whoever is not against us is for us." Jesus recognizes real faith in the would-be exorcist. In our own lives, Jesus invites us to recognize others' good intentions. They should not be cut off simply because they do not line up with al l our personal preferences. What, then, is deserving of such a fate? "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off ? if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out."

When his listeners blame others, Jesus tends to pivot the conversation to their own lives. In this case, the message is clear. What we really need to cut out is that which keeps us from Jesus. If over-commitment causes us to lose pat ience with our family, doubt God's providence, and become consumed with self-reliance, cut something out. If certain friendships lead us time after time into gossip and slander, cut it out. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to live intentionally in our discipleship. Are we ready?

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO

La enseñanza de este domingo es muy clara, y de gran ayuda para todas las personas que trabajan en el ministerio en las parroquias y otras instituciones. Saber que nadie tiene el monopolio del Espíritu de Dios. Digo, por aquellos que creen que sólo está en ciertos grupos y ciertas personas. No todos los que se dicen profetas lo son, y se debe poner mucho cuidado en ellos y sus enseñanzas. Un buen líder, o discípulo, es el que está en sintonía y unidad con sus sentimientos y los planes de Dios. Como ejemplo tenemos a Moisés en la Primera Lectura cuando da la respuesta a Josué. "Ojalá que todo el pueblo de Yavé fuera profeta, que Yavé les diera a todos su espíritu". (Números 11:29).

En ocasiones, los que sirven en las parroquias son intolerantes y presumidos olvidándose de aprender a valorar los distintos dones que tienen las personas y que son dados por Dios para el servicio . El min-isterio no es de nadie, es de Dios y por el Bautismo todos han recibido al Espíritu de Dios. El Papa San Juan XXIII decía. "Hay profetas asalariados, que tienen demasiados intereses creados". Dios inspira a muchas personas que piensan distintamente y ayudan a la sociedad de diferentes maneras. El Papa Francisco nos dice que. "El profeta, si lo es de verdad porque se ha dejado llevar por el espíritu de Jesús, tiene que denunciar la injusticia, venga de donde venga, y anunciar la esperanza a los pobres y excluidos de todo tipo. Si no es así, es sólo un profeta asalariado, un falso profeta. La Iglesia entera ha hecho una opción por los pobres". (EG 198). ¡Ayúdame Señor, a aceptar a los que no piensan como yo!
