Authors It is thought that

William Shakespeare was the author of Hey Diddle Diddle or at least someone around that time

No one knows who the authors are of most of the nursery rhymes.

Who is Mother Goose?Some believe her to be

a witch! Old Mother Goose When she wanted to

wanderWould fly through the air

On a very fine gander.

Mother Goose had a house;

It stood in the wood Where an owl at the door

As sentinel stood

Mother Goose a WITCH?!?!?!

She could fly

She had a gooseWhich is a witch’s familiar

A Familiar is a pet that can do

magical things

She lived Alone!

These are some things that people in the 1600’s associated with a witch.

With this evidence against her. She must be a ….

Witch!!!!

Jack and JillJack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water

Jack fell down and broke his crown

And Jill came tumbling after.

Up got Jack, and home did trot 

As fast as he could caperHe went to bed and bound his

Jack was Louis XVIHe was beheaded

Jill was his wife, Marie Antoinette. She was beheaded after her husband.

Mary Mary quite contrary,How does your garden

grow?With silver bells and cockle

shellsAnd pretty maids all in a

row.

Mary Mary Quite ContraryMary is the queen of England

She had a lot of people who didn’t believe the same as her killed.

So when it asks how her garden grows

The Silver bells and cockle shells are torture devises

The “maids” referred to the gallons that she had to behead people.

Little Jack HornerLittle Jack Horner sat in the

cornerEating his Christmas pie,He put in his thumb and

pulled out a plumAnd said "What a good boy am

I!"

Little Jack HornerBishop Whiting had

a steward named “Horner”.

The King of England, Henry VIII didn’t like Bishop Whiting.

The Bishop tried to bribe the king and hid deeds to a house in a pie.

King didn’t take itHorner testified

against Bishop Whiting.Either he stole the

deed or “Plum” from the pie or he was paid off by the King.

Symptoms

• A “ring of rose” colored rings appeared on the skin

Posies?

• People kept posies with them because they thought the plague was spread by bad smells

• “Ashes, Ashes, We all fall down” Is from burning the bodies after they people died.

Why were rhymes with historical meaning created?

• Some used singing or reciting rhymes as a form of rebellion• Back then they couldn’t say

what they thought if it was against the king.

• This was also their way to make fun of or disagree with the king.

• Others were to remember history• Not everyone could read and

write.• This was their way to

remember history • Or to teach their children• Best way to remember is a

rhyme.

Not All Nursery Rhymes have historical meanings

Some are used to teach

Mary had a little Lamb…Mary had a little lamb its fleece was white as snow;And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to

go.It followed her to school one day, which was against

the rule;It made the children laugh and play, to see a lamb at

school.And so the teacher turned it out, but still it lingered

near,And waited patiently about till Mary did appear.

"Why does the lamb love Mary so?" the eager children cry;

"Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know" the teacher did reply.

Mary had a little Lamb…

This rhyme shows that love is given and received.

It also introduces children to similes.
