BISHOP’S MESSAGE FOR MAY 2016

As we begin the month of May our thoughts go to Mother

Mary whom we call as May Queen. This month is dedicated to

Our Lady with a special devotion to the family rosary. Mother

Mary gathers all of us when we recite the family rosary together.

Beginning from our religious communities and our rectories and

in all families of the parish, the rosary should be recited to invoke

the intercession of Mother Mary on families and peace in the

families. We have been praying for security, safety, happiness.

But above all today we have to pray for families who are under

stress and difficulties. The estranged relationship between the

couple brings about a disastrous situation in the families. As

Mother Mary had been a source and refuge of sinners and the

church rushed to Mother Mary in difficult times, we commend

the families in stress to the protection of Mother Mary. Please

commend your faithful to be ever faithful to the family rosary.

Mother Mary - Our Lady of Fatima appeared on 13 May

1917 at Fatima. We will be beginning the centenary celebration

of the apparitions. The church very much recommends us to

revive once again our devotion to our Lady to fulfill the request

she had made to the whole world through the three children of

Fatima. The messages are very much relevant to our times. In

our diocese there is a devotion to our Lady of Fatima and the

following churches are dedicated to her – Fatima Church Peruvai,

Miyapadavu, Thannirbavi and Fatima Retreat House, Jeppu.

There should be special devotion in these places. We have a

Diocesan Unit of the Fatima Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima.

It was started in Milagres Church, Mangalore by late Rev. Fr

Charles T.Sequeira. At present Fr Francis D’Souza (Mukthi

Prakash) is the Diocesan Director. The inauguration of the

centenary celebration will take place on 29 May at the Shrine of

Our Lady of Fatima at Fatima Retreat House, Jeppu. I shall

offer mass at 5 p.m. at the Shrine. I request you to join the

mass.

On 15 May 2016, I will be completing 20 years of being

a Bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore. God has in His immense

goodness had chosen me to be the Shepherd of the Diocese. I

shall offer thanksgiving mass on 15 May 2016 at Our Rosario

Cathedral at 10.30a.m. It is my desire that all the Fathers -

Diocesan and Religious to join me in this Mass of thanksgiving.

Please announce to the people to pray for me during the mass

that day. It coincides with the Pentecost Day celebration. While

thanking God I have certainly a duty to thank each and every one

of you. With your cooperation God enabled me to complete 20

years as a Bishop of this great Diocese of Mangalore. Be

assured of my prayers for everyone in this Diocese.

The schools and colleges will begin in June. Please ensure

that all the children attend the school and as we had expressed

earlier every child in our diocese should have an opportunity for

education at least upto Std. XII (II PUC). If the parents are not

able to provide this education, the parish should come forward to

assist them financially. Our people are generous to put up church,

hall, school buildings, monuments in the cemetery etc. It depends

on us to motivate them to finance the economically backward

children to pursue their studies. Our duty does not rest by giving

recommendations for help. Instead let each parish community/

school take up this as a challenge to educate the economically

backward ones. Let me also remind you of our decision to give

financial support to the third child. Please get information from

the CODP to find out the sources of assistance from the Govt.

and other voluntary and N.G.O. agencies.

I am pleased to tell you God has chosen 5 young men

whom I have ordained to the order of priesthood. I congratulate

them and wish them a fruitful priestly ministry in our diocese.

In the month of May in several parishes I Holy communion

will takeplace. I congratulate the little ones, their parents, Priests

and their collaborators. I wish that the catechism to the I

communion children be given great attention by the priest/s followed

up as they grow.

Before the beginning of June the parishes have to plan for

the catechism on Sundays and in the school. The Mangala Jyothi

is organising training to the teachers. I request the Parish Priests

to organise the training to the teachers and cooperate with

Mangala Jyothi. Priests please take the books and other material

pertaining to the I Communion in May itself. May God bless

(Annual Returns)

The Parish Priests are requested to send the statements

of accounts to the chancery as soon as they are audited.

Please go through the Parish Pastoral constitution wherein all

details are given regarding the submission of accounts. Please

go through our observations on the previous year’s accounts

and keep the enclosures with the accounts. If you have any

difficulties please contact the auditor personally with our

observations.

Some of the Parishes and institutions have not at

submitted their annual statistics which are to be forwarded

to Rome. The whole work takes 30 minutes only. Please

go through the office copy of last year and you will be able

Centenary – Fatima Apparitions

The world Fatima Apostolate will hold the centenary

celebrations of the apparitions of our Lady of Fatima in Portugal

in the year 2017. Mother Mary appeared to 3 children of Fatima

on 13 May to 13 October 1917. Due to these apparitions the

message of Fatima – call for prayer, penance and consecration

of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The worldwide

apostolate of Fatima (earlier called Blue Army) spread the

message to the whole world. In our diocese we have a unit and

Fr Francis D’Souza (Mukthi) is the Diocesan Director. In

collaboration with the Fatima Shrine at Retreat House, Jeppu,

Mangalore, the Diocesan unit will organise the inaugural

programme of the centenary at Fatima Retreat House, Jeppu, on

29 May 2016. Full day programme will appear in Raknno. A

solemn high mass by the Bishop of Mangalore will takeplace at

5 p.m. This will be followed by a procession with the statue of

the Lady of Fatima blessed and brought from the place of

apparitions in Fatima from Fatima Retreat House to Milagres

Church. Please encourage the parish associations and the faithful

to take part in any of the programmes in Fatima Retreat House

and join the evening mass and the procession

Please Note

Milagres College, Hampankatta, Mangalore has got

permission from Mangalore University to start (BHS) Hotel

Management 3 years Degree Course from the academic year

2016-17. The course will commence from June 2016. II PUC

Arts/Commerce/Science passed students are eligible to take up

this course. BHS Hotel Management course has wide scope for

employment, in Hotel Industry, Aviation Industry, Tourism Industry,

Cruise Shipping Companies and in Hospitals. This course is first

of its kind in Mangalore and in Karnataka run by Catholic

Institutions. Only 40 seats are sanctioned by the University.

Christian boys and girls are given preference with a discount fee.

An Evening College will be started by Milagres College

Management from 2016-17 with BCOM course.

The Management also has newly set up Hostel facilities

for Christian boys and girls of Degree and PUC, for minimum

cost from June 2016-17. The rural boys and girls especially from

Kasargod Dt. will be given preference in the Hostels. Parish

Priest are requested to guide catholic students to take up these

courses. Please note, girls are given 25% discount in PUC and

Degree courses.

I. LENTEN CAMPAIGN 2016

The draw of Lenten Campaign lucky coupons will

take place on 25.05.2016. Those of you who have not

returned the counterfoils and amount please do so before

15.05.2016. Please note: No reminder will be sent to you,

and hence kindly do the needful.

II. EDUCARE LOAN 2016-17

“Educare loan”, is an initiative of a Mangalorean Catholic

NRI to assist the poor and needy Catholic students of

Mangalore and Udupi Dioceses. It was started in the year

2013. Over the past three years, 2416 students were supported

in these two Dioceses. This scholarship loan is to be

compulsory repaid within a period of 18 months following the

completion of studies.

Student’s eligibility

a. Annual income of the family should be less than 2,00,000/-

b. Families with two or more students studying

c. Require at least 50% of marks in their last qualifying exam

d. Only the students studying above PUC (Graduation, Post

graduation, Diploma)

e. Only for the catholic students of Mangalore and Udupi

Dioceses

f. Only for the students who have applied for Government

minority scholarship during the previous year.

g. Only for the students who get admission under CET/

COMED-K (in case of BE, MBBS students)

h. Not for correspondence courses, part time and private

studies.

Engineering - Rs 60,000 each

Medical - Rs 1 lakh each

Paramedical - Rs 60,000 each

Fresh and renewal students can submit their applications

online from May 2016 onwards but before the due dates,

even if the admissions are late. Students are advised to

read the instructions found in Menu link before filing them

and make sure that you have all documents & details with

you to proceed (Scanned copy of your marks cards & passport

size photo). The procedure of online application is as follows

1. Go to www.codpindia.com/educare

2. Renewal applicants directly enter your permanent register

number & password and submit your application. Please do

not edit your profile link.

3. Fresh applicants click ‘register new’ and fill in the details

and submit. After registration, sign in with the temporary/

user id and password.

4. Complete all the required details in the profile link (Update

profile, photo, contact, Family, Education, Scholarship, and

Asset). After that go to application link, complete all the

required information and submit.

5. After submitting the application, you have to take print out

of that application and obtain signatures of concerned ward

people and your Parish Priest in the last page of the

application and send the hard copy of application along

with the copy of your marks cards to CODP, Nanthoor

before due date. Application will not be processed until we

receive hardcopy of the application at our office.

6. Once your application is accepted by us, you will receive

the mail regarding your permanent register number and the

date, time and place of interview. (please note: no phone

calls will be made for interview)

7. After your interview selected candidates will be receiving

one more mail regarding date & time of the agreement

process and disbursement of amount. You have to come to

CODP along with one of your parents and a witness for

agreement. Please bring the following with you 1) Pass

book of SB Account opened at MCC Bank

2) E-stamp paper of Rs. 20/- 3) Fees receipt or bills

MCC Bank.

8. Those who have not attended last year’s motivation

programme must enclose a letter with reason for not

attending the programme while submitting the hard copy of

application at CODP.

III. CIVIL SERVICE TRAINING at KROSS, Bangaluru

Our presence in society is not that visible mainly because

of our absence in Civil services of our country. Even though

there are considerable number of educational, social and health

institutions run by Christians, it is the non Christians who get

major benefit out of them. Over and above that the atrocities

and attacks on Christians are on the increase.

We, the Catholic community being a minority have a

minuscule representation both in Politics and Civil Services of

our country which often leads to Catholics being a soft target

for the fundamental right wing groups, threats and being looked

down as second rate citizens. Catholics find it very difficult

to get their work done in government offices due to the

officials high handedness. Hence it is imperative that our

Catholic youth join Civil Services and Politics and be value

based leaders who will serve community, the most marginalized

and above all our motherland, India.

Therefore the Bishops of Karnataka (KRCBC) have

started the Career Advancement Programme to train our

students for the highly competitive exams through the

involvement of DSSSs and KROSS. It gives 11 months intensive

Mains-cum-Prelims coaching for Civil Service (IAS, IPS, IFS,

KAS, CDS, NDA, CPF, etc.) for Catholic Graduates and

Post Graduates.

The students will be selected for the Full Time Course

on the basis of their performance in the entrance exams and

personality test. Students can avail and submit the applications

to Director CODP which has to be duly recommended by

you. The application and prospectus can be down loaded from

the KROSS website www.krossbangalore.org/

www.krossbangalore.com.  The eligible candidates will be

intimated through the CODP and the entrance exam will be

conducted to all the eligible students at CODP. Those who

qualify the entrance exam would be intimated through CODP

to attend the Personality Test for final selection and the

successful students will be enrolled for the Full Time Course.

The coaching fees per student would be Rs. 60,000.

KROSS could make all efforts to contribute to the

amount by 4 to 5% at the maximum through local

contribution. Besides this fees, the student will have to

take care of their hostel charges which may be around

Rs. 6,000/- per month.

Students can avail interest free Educare loan from

CODP.

Hence, we earnestly request you to take special interest

in the dissemination of this information and announcement about

civil service exam coaching in the parishes. The more the

number of students we could reach the best students can be

selected for training.

l Guidance Cell is a free service by CODP on an experimental

basis to help job seekers of our community to find a private

job whether in countries in the gulf or in India. It was

envisioned by our Educare Trustee and was inaugurated by

our Bishop on 13th March 2015 at Dubai.

l Guidance Cell will function as an online platform that puts

both the Job provider and the one who seeks proper

employment in touch with one another. Therefore, we do

not guarantee the jobs nor do we arrange for a visa or a

flight ticket. The service that we render is free of cost

and no money is paid to the job provider or the Job

facilitator. For the time being we are focusing on jobs in

gulf countries only.

l Those seeking employment need to register their names

and other details like date and place of birth, their

educational qualifications and work experience on our

3. You are requested to collect the catechism/Value Education textbooks from Mangala Jyothi by 17th June 2016. Kindly placeyour orders well in advance through email or by post sothat we can keep the books ready. For rate and other details

refer Mangala Jyothi bulletin May/June issue 2016.

4. Since the Government has banned the use of plastic carry bagswe will not be able to provide any carry bag. Kindly bring yourbags.

5. I am sure that you have conducted the evaluation meeting withyour catechism teachers. Kindly ask your co-ordinator to preparea report of the catechetical activities and send it to the deanerypriest co-ordinator.

6. Dear deanery priest co-ordinator/dean please collect the reportsfrom all the parishes and send us the consolidated report of thecatechetical mission of your deanery to Mangala Jyothi by 30thJune 2016. I have already received a report from Surathkaldeanery.
