Most religions, most people in the world believe

that our physical death is not the end of our existence; some form of immortality exists, in some

place, in some heaven or hell, however that might be

conceived or defined.

As Christians, as Catholics, this is our belief – that

the dead are still alive, still themselves and, very importantly, conscious, and in a loving relationship

with God, with us and with all others who have gone

before them marked with the sign of faith. That is our

common concept of Heaven and, however simplistic as it may seem, it is wonderfully correct. That is what

the Christian faith, as well as Catholic dogma holds to

be true. After death we live on, conscious, self-

conscious, in communication with others who have tasted death before us and, more importantly, in

communion with God as well as those who the

deceased left behind on earth. This is the doctrine

known as The Communion of the Saints.

The Gospels tell us that at the instant of Jesus’ death, the veil of the temple was torn in two from

top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks

were split. The tombs were opened and many bodies

of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised (Matthew 27: 50-52). The Gospels then go on to tell

us that on the morning of the Resurrection several

women came to Jesus’ grave to anoint his dead body with embalming spices, but rather than find his dead

body, they witnessed an empty grave and two angels

who challenged them with words to this effect: Why

are you looking for a live person in a cemetery? He isn’t here. He is alive and you can find him in Galilee.

As Christians, we believe we are given eternal life

through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Among other

images, the Gospels express that Jesus’ death

“opened the tombs” and emptied the graveyards. In other words, the true essence of a deceased person is

not the body that is in the ground or was cremated as

ashes (although the Church accords great dignity and

respect to our human remains). However, the true essence of who we are is being with Jesus, in

“Galilee”.

What is “Galilee” in terms of a biblical image? In

the Gospels, Galilee is more than just a place on a

map. In the Gospels, Galilee is the place where, for the most part, good things happen. It’s the place

where the disciples, who later on will be called the

Apostles, meet Jesus for the first time. Galilee is where they commit themselves to Him. Galilee is

the place where the majority of Jesus’ miracles

take place. Galilee is where Jesus invites Peter to

walk on water. Galilee is the place where Jesus was transfigured on the mountain (Matthew 17: 1 -9).

(Mark 9:18) (Luke 9: 28-36). Galilee is where Jesus

gives to the Apostles the Great Commission and

then ascends back to the Father (Matthew 28: 16-20) (Luke 24: 50-53).

Galilee is also the place where each of our loved

ones reside. In each of the lives of our loved ones,

there was a Galilee, a place where both their body

and spirit were most vibrant, where their lives radiated the energy and exuberance of The Divine.

When we look back on the life of a loved one who

has died, we need to ask: Where was she, or he,

most alive? Where did he, or she, seem most at peace, most content, most at ease?

Name those things and you will have named

your loved one’s Galilee – and in the process you

will also have named the place where you will once

again meet your loved one in the Communion of Saints. Don’t look for a live person in a cemetery.

She or he is not there. He, or she is in Galilee. That

is where you will be reunited to them.

A leading German theologian, Karl Rahner, adds

this thought: “We affirm our loved ones, those who have died, have fallen not into nothingness but into

the embrace of the living God. And that is where

we can find them again; when we open our hearts to the silent calmness of God’s own life in which we

dwell, not by selfishly calling them back to where

we are, but by descending into our own hearts

where God abides.”

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS CHOIR

This year we would like to have a Children’s Christmas Choir sing at the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass.

The ages for this group will be 1st through 5th Grade. We will have 6 rehearsal times, and they will all take place before either Religious Education sessions or Home Teach sessions. The dates of the rehearsals are as follows:

• Home Teach: November 10 and December 1 at 5:45 pm.

• Religious Ed: November 29, 30, and December 6, and 7 at 5:30 pm.

Rehearsals are 30 minutes, and attendance at two rehearsals is mandatory. A sign-in sheet will be made available at each rehearsal. If a child misses a rehearsal on their regular CCD night, they may attend one of the other rehearsals and sign-in on the attendance sheet for that evening. On December 24 they will sing at the 4:00 pm Mass, and they must be in church ready to sing by 3:30 pm. We hope that your child will be excited to participate in Music Ministry that day! Watch for more information and details as we get closer to the first rehearsal date, November 10th.

The leaves have gone from green to vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges to browns and bare branches, We can see that the end of Fall is approaching and so is the end of the liturgical year, which occurs on Saturday, November 27th.

We can also see a change in the readings as we approach the liturgical year’s end. This Sunday’s readings, from the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the ones from the Prophet Daniel and St. Mark the Evangelist, are linked. The link is eschatological. Eschatological means that they deal with the end times. The Prophet Daniel’s writings, and in particular, the reading proclaimed at Mass, is called apocalyptic literature. Most people think that apocalypse means the end of the world, but it really means to reveal what is hidden. The Book of Revelation is also called “The Apocalypse” and gives us glimpses into heaven and revealing what will happen at the General Judgment, as well as describing heaven, which is hidden to us on earth.

The Church in her wisdom puts these readings near the end of the liturgical year because they describe an ending, but moreover, a new beginning. We should look at it as a commencement. They should offer us hope, expectation, and a stark reminder that we should be preparing for the celebration of Christ’s birth and His second coming. That is what our next liturgical season and the beginning of the liturgical year is all about, Advent!

Today’s gospel uses nature, the life cycle of a fig tree, to illustrate how natural signs can be our spiritual guideposts. God reveals himself through nature. We are asked to look at our natural world’s sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. We use God’s natural signs to prepare for the coming winter. When we see frost, feel the temperature drop, hear and see birds flying south, we know to winterize our sprinkler systems, check the antifreeze in our cars, and check out our furnaces in preparation for winter. If we fail to see these signs, or worse just ignore them, we are left out in the cold and usually with hefty repair bills too!

Today’s readings and the upcoming Season of Advent, in just two short weeks, should remind us to prepare our souls as well. Get a “spiritual check up.” The gospel tells us that we will not know when we will be called home to God, to meet Jesus at our Particular Judgment. So this is the time to think about how you will prepare for the “adventure” of Advent which culminates in the celebration of the incarnation of Christ’s coming into our sensible world, and if you will be properly prepared if you are called home to Christ.

Know that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit want us all to be prepared, and that is why the Trinity gives us many signs. All we need to do is recognize them and follow them, and if we do we will have God’s...

Peace, Love and Blessings, Deacon Marc

SENIOR CLUB Come Join Us

Seniors, come and join us at our next Senior Club meeting on Monday, November 15. We meet at 11:30 am for some refreshments, and after our 50 /50 drawing, spend the rest of the afternoon playing cards of choice.

This is a great opportunity to get out of the house and visit with your fellow seniors. A cup of coffee and donut, some good company and an afternoon of cards make for a good time.

We meet the third Monday of every month in the Parish Social Hall.

Mark your calendars and join us on Monday, November 15.

BECAUSE WE CARE

I Hope and Pray that You are OK

According to Merriam Webster, hope means to expect with confidence: TRUST

What good came out of 2020. Did we lean into hope, or did we let situations cloud our vision. Did we collaborate with others to fuel hatred, or are we collaborating with others to promote hope and peace through prayer.

Page 8: Most religions, most people in the world believe
Page 9: Most religions, most people in the world believe

BECAUSE WE CARE —

continued from page 7

With our struggles, where did we find grace, peace and hope? Did we lean into the Lord? Did we allow him to make us a channel of His peace?

It is a privilege to hope and pray for and with others. What is more hopeful and motivating than knowing someone believes in you enough to pray for you? If you know someone prayed for you today, how will you use that extra prayer? If it makes you feel hopeful then lean into Hope. Trust with confidence that God has a plan for all of us, in His time, in His terms. Once we are hopeful and confident, lets hope for others through prayer and action.

While I sincerely hope you are OK, I will take it one step further. I hope you are OK and I prayed for you today. I challenge you today. Let someone know that you are hoping and praying that they are OK. One call, one text, one prayer. I hope and pray that we all have a blessed and prosperous new year.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
