BSE Sensex edged up slightly on Wednesday as investors turned cautious ahead of a slew of corporate results, particularly banks, although a forecast for an average monsoon gave a leg-up to market sentiment. The focus is now on the financial sector this week—with Yes Bank and HDFC Bank due to report results—after mixed fortunes at IT blue chips that have already reported earnings. Sentiment, however, was supported after India’s weather office said on Tuesday that monsoon rains would be of an average amount in 2017, easing concerns over farm and economic growth. “Hopes of a consumption recovery in the second half of the year are holding up the markets from a long-term perspective Financial stocks were among the top losers on the NSE index. Ltd shares rise 1.5% to Rs85.40 after the company said it reported a net profit of Rs98.24 crore in March quarter against net loss of Rs18.26 crore a year ago. Net sales rose 37.5% to Rs79.72 crore. YES Bank is likely to post net profit of Rs 948.20 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2017 against net profit of Rs 682.10 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Net interest income of the company is likely jump from Rs 1,241.40 crore to Rs 1522.10 crore during the same period. Private lender IndusInd Bank on Wednesday reported a 21.16 per cent YoY rise in net profit to Rs 751.61 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2016. The numbers came in lower than Rs 780 crore estimated by analysts in an ET Now poll. The Hinduja group-controlled bank had reported a net profit of Rs 620.35 crore in the corresponding quarter of last year. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have pumped in Rs 2618.02 crore in the domestic equity markets in April so far with gross purchases and gross sales of Rs 48894.31 crore and Rs 46276.29 crore, respectively. On a year-to-date basis, they have bought shares worth Rs 42250 crore, as per data available with depository NSDL. Shares of Nalco slumped 7 per cent in Wednesday’s trade as the government kick started its two-day offer for sale (OFS) for up to 10 per cent stake in the state-run firm. News: South Korean consumer electronics giant LG is looking at making India its

export hub, banking on good ties between the two countries at a time when its overseas shipments from China are declining.

Shares of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd. fell the most in five months after the U.S. drug regulator issued an inspection report with six observations for the company’s Bachupally manufacturing facility in Hyderabad.

European markets struck a note of cautious optimism on Wednesday, with stocks rising and haven assets declining. U.K. shares edged lower as the pound held most of its gains following the surprise election announcement.

Commodity companies helped spur the Stoxx Europe 600 Index, which was rebounding following the biggest one-day loss since November. Sterling pulled back slightly after reaching the strongest level since October on Tuesday. Oil gained before key data is released today, the dollar strengthened and U.S. stock futures pointed to a higher opening.

The U.K. vote joins a slew of elections to be held this year against a backdrop of rising populism in the Europe, while geopolitical tensions are simmering over both North Korea and Syria and the pace of monetary tightening in the world’s biggest economy looks uncertain.

The Fed’s Beige Book release on Wednesday will be keenly eyed for clues as to what’s driven the recent cooling of U.S. economic activity.

The first round of voting in the French election is on Sunday and the two leading candidates will run off in a winner-takes-all contest on May 7.

Morgan Stanley rounds out earnings for Wall Street’s biggest banks today. It could get a boost from healthy fixed-income trading after JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of America reported better-than-expected revenue from that business.

U.S. oil inventories fell 840,000 barrels last week, according to the API. More official EIA data due today may show a larger drop of 1.4 million barrels.

The yen dropped 0.4 percent to 108.86 per dollar after gaining 0.5 percent Tuesday. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.2 percent following a two-day decline.

The pound dropped less than 0.1 percent to $1.2821 after its 2.2 percent surge Tuesday. The euro also slipped less than 0.1 percent.

The yield on 10-year Treasuries rose four basis points to 2.21 percent after an eight-basis-point plunge Tuesday.

The yield on German notes due in a decade also increased four basis points to 0.20 percent.

Gold declined 0.6 percent to $1,282.35 an ounce after closing at the highest since November in the previous session.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 0.3 percent to $52.59 a barrel, after two days of losses. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.8 percent, taking its four-day loss to 3.2 percent. The main Shenzhen market was also down a fourth day. The Hang Seng Index slid 0.4 percent and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped below the 10,000 level for the first time in two months. Japan’s Topix index was little changed, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index lost 0.6 percent and South Korea’s Kospi index fell 0.5 percent.
