BSE Sensex closed higher on Tuesday, while IT stocks extended gains following a share buyback plan by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. Sentiment was broadly cautious with Asian shares largely flat after a holiday in the US markets on Monday. “Overall, the market has moved very marginally in the last few sessions and what it looks like now is a time-based correction with more stock-based moves,” said Saurabh Jain, assistant vice-president of research at SMC Global Securities. “Focus will now rest on global cues such as US interest rates, dollar movement and foreign investment participation. India on Monday extended anti-dumping duty on some steel products from China by five years, in a bid to retain protectionist barriers and stem the tide of cheap foreign products. Telecom stocks fell ahead of Reliance Jio press conference at 1.3pm. Bharti Airtel Ltd fell 2.8%, Idea Cellular Ltd fell 1%. Aviation stocks trading higher. Jet Airways India Ltd rose 4.5%, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd rose 3%, SpiceJet Ltd 5.5%. The Max Financial Services Ltd shares trade down at Rs569.40 on the BSE, down 4% from the previous close. Max Financial shares fall 5% to Rs566.70 after huge block deal. Around 15.10 million shares or 5.6% stake of the company changed hands in three block deals. However details of the buyers and sellers were not known. Ambuja Cement Ltd shares fall 1% to Rs236.90. The company on Monday reported 85% increase in its December quarter consolidated net profit to Rs205.70 crore against Rs111.04 crore a year ago. IDBI Bank Ltd shares rise 0.7% to Rs 82.95 ahead of its board meeting due later today. India facing too many complications in IDBI stake sale; working out new strategy for stake sale. Reliance Industries Ltd shares rise 0.5% to Rs 1079 ahead of its press conference at 1.30pm where its chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani will speak. Marksans Pharma Ltd shares rise 5.6% to Rs 51.45. The company said in a notice to BSE that UK drugs regulator has completed the inspection at its Goa plant without any critical observations. ITC and Bharti Airtel were top losers on BSE Sensex, down 1-2% followed by TCS, Coal India, Sun Pharma and M&M while Axis Bank, Asian Paints and HUL were the top gainers. Shares of Salona Cotspin, Jindal Worldwide, ISMT Ltd, HOV Services, Pearl Polymers, Future Retail Ltd., Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL), Merck Ltd and Tarmat Ltd hit their fresh 52-week high on NSE. Shares of Rural Electrification Corporation climbed over 3 per cent in morning trade on Tuesday after the company inked Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam (JBVNL) and Jharkhand Urja Sancharan Nigam (JUSNL) for extending financial assistance to the tune of Rs 15,150 crore. European equities slipped in early trading on Tuesday, with HSBC leading the regional banking index lower after reporting a 62% slump in its annual pre-tax profit. Europe's biggest bank dropped 6% and was headed for its biggest one-day fall since August 2015. However, the Nifty IT index rose as much as 1.2% to its highest since Aug. 25, 2016 at intra-day but later pared gains to turn flat. TCS on Monday announced that it would buy back shares worth up to Rs 16,000 crore ($2.39 billion) at a substantial premium, raising expectations rivals such as Infosys would follow suit. Dealer's Diary BSE Sensex closed higher by 100 points, or 0.35%, to 28,762, while the Nifty 50 rose 29 points, or 0.32%, to 8,908. BSE Sensex closed higher on Tuesday, while IT stocks extended gains following a share buyback plan by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.
