INTRODUCTION

It is ambitious to wish to explore God Himself. It is far-reaching to study theism or the elements of deity. One must think with care. No people, nor any civilization in history, have risen above its reach for the Most High. As we delve into infinitudes beyond the first and second dimensions, we discover eternal reality. Man's greatest struggle, from his creation until today, is to know the Most High. Studying the Most High is man's most meaningful exploration. Man has sought the Eternal by many means. God said of early generations in Romans 1:21, Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. In man's natural search for ultimate truth he comes to Numinous or that incomprehensible something beyond his experience. Man mentally arrives at Mysterium Tremendum, or the mystery unfolding the universe. He discovers a place of things sensed, yet not mentally perceived. Man does not arrive at deity through the human mind. Christ told His disciples that flesh and blood did not reveal His deity, but the Father in heaven revealed or showed who He was. Matthew l6:17, And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. I Corinthians 3:19-20, For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is writ-ten, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. v. 20, And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

The Hebrew word used for God in the Old Testament had no vowels. Thus God's name, "I AM" was spelled JHVH. This is what is called the tetragram (tetra means "four," gram means "writing or letters"). The Jews took the commandment not to use the name of the Lord in vain very seriously and resisted pronouncing the name at all. Instead, they took the vowels from the Hebrew word for the Lord "Adonai" and put them with the consonants of JHVH. The result was the word "Jahovaih"-in English, "JEHOVAH." No one was allowed to pronounce the original spelling of the word except the High Priest. When he did, the other priests were to sing a psalm and drown out the High Priest's voice to make sure that only God heard the pronunciation. It was also allowed for a rabbinic teacher to pronounce the name to his students once or twice every seven years so that the true pronunciation would not be forgotten. Sometimes they simply would say, "the Name" when reading a passage in which the name occurred. Many times they used "the presence" or "the glory" to speak of the Shekinah glory associated with the name of God. Adonai (the Lord) was frequently used, as well as many other titles which refer to His character, such as:

A. "the Most High" B. "the Height" (or "High One") C. "Heaven" D. "the Almighty" E. "Lord of Heaven" F. "the Eternal" G. "the Power"

One title, which has always been very meaningful, is "the One who Answers Prayer." This practice of "talking in circles" is called circumlocution, which means exactly that. Circa means "around" and locution means "to speak." The rabbinic law says that any person who does not use circumlocution (in other words, who says the JHVH) will not have a place in the next life. The blasphemer, according to rabbinic law, is one who distinctly pronounces that name. This differs from our understanding of blasphemy where a form of profanity is involved. To the Jew simply pronouncing the name is profanity enough to deserve the sentence of death.

In these lessons we shall seek to penetrate the dominate truth of the existence and reality of the Most High. These truths are not only self evident, but imperative to our times. There has to be a basis upon which truth rests. There must be an absolute. We believe it to be the Most High God as predicted in the Judeo-Christian teachings of the Almighty. I feel compelled to give my antecedent belief, trust, and experience in God. God has urged my soul to explain theistic faith. I do not wish to provide an apologetic form of my faith in God. I desire a simple statement of faith. Man's knowledge is so limited and restricted. The reality of God bursts the bounds of human abilities to comprehend. Restoration and revival will come with our knowledge of God. It is our ultimate hope.

SEARCHING FOR THE MOST HIGH

9

INTRODUCTION: From the time of Adam's loss of personal relationship and intimate fellowship with the Most High, each succeeding generation has sought to communicate with the Most High God. We wish to join the search for knowledge of the Most High. These lessons are an in depth exploration of theism. To search for the Most High, we must challenge history. We must explore all truth available. What an amazing challenge there is in my heart to know better the Most High God. READING: Genesis 3:22-24, And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: v. 23, Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. v. 24, So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. 1. HOW MAN LOST RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MOST HIGH

A. In the beginning, at his creation, Adam personally knew the Most High. He walked and talked with the Most High God against whom Adam volitionally rebelled. Adam destroyed his friendship, fellowship, and relationship with the Most High.

Page 11: Most High Front Cover - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy …...To the Jew simply pronouncing the name is profanity enough to deserve the sentence of death. Introduction Lesson 1 7 In these lessons

Searching for the Most High Lesson 2

10

B. Through Adam, humans lost the majesty of Elohim and began to walk in

ignorance, superstition, and demon deception. In Adam all men die.

I Corinthians 15:22, For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

C. Since Adam, erroneous teachings always stemmed from the lack of personal

knowledge of the Most High.

D. Without the Most High, man's greatest desire is to realize God.

E. Man's greatest adventures are in pursuit of knowledge of the Most High. F. The very spirit and soul of the human person senses its origin, and forever

longs and desires to return to its source! 2. THE CHIEF ADVERSARY OF THE MOST HIGH

A. From the time of Adam's fall and his loss of fellowship with God, man sought to know God. The evil one, Satan, has taken advantage of man's thirst for God, and has given him counterfeit idols and dreams to worship. Man hopes these images of mud, stone, wood, silver, and gold will in some way restore him to fellowship with immortality.

B. The Bible says that at the time of this ignorance God winked at man's idolatry,

but now God commands all men everywhere to repent.

Acts 17:30, And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent. God desires that man know Him.

C. It is Satanic transgression and rebellion that separates man from God.

Romans 1:18-25, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; v. 19, Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. v. 20, For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Searching for the Most High Lesson 2

11

v. 21, Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

v. 22, Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, v. 23, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. v. 24, Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: v. 25, Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

3. SATAN CALLS THE MOST HIGH THE UNKNOWN

The Greek intellectuals on Mars Hill in Athens presented many gods (Zeus, Mars, Apollo, Jupiter, and Mercury) by legends, traditions, and old tales.

The Most High was unknown to them. He was named the "Unknown God." This is true for millions of people living today. He is still the "Unknown God."

Paul said in Acts 17:22-29, Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. v. 23, For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. v. 24, God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; v. 25, Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; v. 26, And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; v. 27, That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: v. 28, For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. v. 29, Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

4. THE MOST HIGH IS UNREACHABLE BY HUMAN REASON

Job asked this question in Job 11:7, Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

5. ABRAHAM SOUGHT THE MOST HIGH

A. Abraham was born and reared in the area of Ur of the Chaldees. He was directed in life by his deep longing in his heart for the Most High.

Genesis 17:1, And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD ap-peared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

B. Abraham explained it this way, "I was looking for a city that hath foundations

whose builder and maker is the Most High." (Hebrews 11: 10)

C. After the first revelation of the Most High, Abraham spent the remainder of his life in pursuit of a greater knowledge of the Most High.

6. ISAIAH'S QUEST FOR THE MOST HIGH

Isaiah 40:28, Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

7. PAUL RECOGNIZED THE UNREACHABLENESS OF THE MOST HIGH

Romans 11:33, 0 the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

8. MOSES DISCOVERS THE MOST HIGH

For 40 years Moses traveled the vast expanses of the Sinai Desert in search of the Most High. One day he observed a small umbrella-shaped tree that lit up like a furnace.

At first Moses may have considered the desert phenomenon a mirage. As he approached the burning tree, which was not consumed, Moses discovered the Most High. Exodus 3:14, And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

9. QUEEN OF SHEBA SEARCHED FOR THE MOST HIGH

A. One of the most remarkable instances in the Bible of a person’s seeking the Most High is that of the queen of Sheba. In her African kingdom she heard that a king in Jerusalem named Solomon had information regarding the Most High.

I Kings 10:1-5, And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions. v. 2, And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart. v. 3, And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not. v. 4, And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom, and the house that he had built, v. 5, And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.

B. Her whole nation in Africa became the recipient of God's blessings because of

her search for the Most High God. 10. WISE MEN FROM THE ORIENT

A. The Gospel of Matthew tells us of the magi who came from the East seeking the Most High.

B. The nation of Iran, formerly Persia, has three cities named after these three men

who came to seek the Most High in Israel.

They crossed the desert and mountains in pursuit of this knowledge. In Bethlehem, they gazed in wonder as they brought their expensive gifts to the Son of the Most High.

11. THE QUEST GOES ON

A. Men with burning hearts have isolated themselves in vast mountain areas alone, seeking the Most High.

B. Others with deep convictions have closeted themselves in caves of the earth

seeking the Most High.

C. History records others who with great determination have undertaken long and hazardous journeys seeking the Most High.

12. THE STARS ARE NOT THE MOST HIGH

I was on a vessel traveling the Inside Passage of Alaska. One night after dinner I was pacing the deck and joined the captain of the ship for a walk. During the walk I said, "Captain, regarding Jesus, whose Son is He?" The captain, dressed in his white uniform, was visibly shaken. He stopped under the bright Northern Star, raised his hand and said, "Sir, those stars are my god." I placed my hand on his shoulder and said, "Captain, do not ever forget that it was my God who made your gods, as mine is the Most High."

13. THE WATER GOD

On my first trip around the world, I left San Francisco for Australia. In the middle of the Pacific Ocean I talked to two British passengers, a man and his wife. I spoke to them about salvation and about the knowledge of the Most High. They were standing on the deck at the time and the husband, looking at the briny waters of the South Pacific, said, "These waters are my god." I replied that his god was salty, nervous, and not responsive to any need he may have.

14. THE GOD WHO LOST A HAND

In Java, I was visiting in the palace of the rajah. On the palace grounds, I visited his temple. In one area of the temple, I saw a god that was made up of arms and hands. I said, "I am sure he is the handiest god I have ever seen." Looking closer, I saw that one of the hands had fallen off. With my interpreter I called the temple priest over. "We are about to see a miracle. Your god lost a hand and I am sure it will come back on there soon." The priest shook his head sadly and said, "No, I built this god back in the workshop and I know I will have to put the hand back on myself, as I am the one that made it." I laid my hand on his shoulder and again, through my interpreter said, "Sir, my God created all the material on the face of this earth, which means my God made your god!” The priest was visibly shaken as I continued to walk through the rajah's palace.

Lesson 3

KNOWING THE MOST HIGH

15

INTRODUCTION: In lesson 2 we were in search of the Most High. In this lesson we shall deal with KNOWING THE MOST HIGH. READING: Judges 2:16, And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. 1. NOT KNOWING THE MOST HIGH

According to the above scripture, a new generation came who did not know the Most High. There was electricity in the air from the beginning, but man did not know it. When it was discovered, man began to use the power of electricity. Man had to discover it first; so in every generation man must rediscover and know the Most High.

2. THE PROPHET EZEKIEL WITNESSED THE GLORY OF THE MOST HIGH

Ezekiel, the prophet of God, came to know the magnificence of the Most High.

Ezekiel 1:26-28, And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. v. 27, And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.

v. 28, As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

Ezekiel did not read about the Most High. He had a personal knowledge and strong memories of his encounter with the Most High.

3. THE WISE KING SOLOMON SAW THE MAJESTY OF THE MOST HIGH

Solomon saw his temple, modeled of silver and gold, light up supernaturally with a dazzling brilliance.

2 Chronicles 7:1-4, Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house. v. 2, And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORDS house. v. 3, And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever. v. 4, Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD.

The king and his subjects witnessed a flaming fire that came from heaven to the altar of the Most High.

4. ISRAEL CEASED TO KNOW THE MOST HIGH

A. Isaiah 59:2, But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

B. Isaiah 64:7, And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up

himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

C. Ezekiel 39:23, And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into

captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.

5. ABRAHAM KNEW THE MOST HIGH BECAUSE OF APPEARANCES TO HIM

Abraham came to personally know the Most High.

A. Genesis 12:7, And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed

will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

B. Genesis 17:1, And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD ap-

peared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the A1mighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

6. JACOB KNEW THE MOST HIGH

Genesis 35:9, And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.

7. MOSES KNEW THE MOST HIGH

Exodus 3:16, Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob., appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt.

8. PETER ON THE HOUSETOP

Acts10:34-38, Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: v. 35, But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. v. 36, The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all) v. 37, That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; v. 38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Peter's remarkable revelation on the housetop at Joppa, near Tel Aviv, gave him a tremendous knowledge of the Most High, revealing the total equality of salvation for all men by the Lord Jesus Christ.

9. PAUL WAS CAUGHT UP TO THE THIRD HEAVEN

II Corinthians 12:2, I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. v. 3, And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell God knoweth;) v. 4, How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

NATIONS AND THE MOST HIGH

19

INTRODUCTION: Throughout history God has dealt with whole nations as well as cities and individuals. It is up to the individuals within a nation to repent and bring the whole country to God. The Most High has dealt and does deal collectively with nations, with empires, and with races of people. READING: Psalm 8: 1, 0 LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. II Chronicles 7:14, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 1. ISRAEL AND THE MOST HIGH

God has amazingly dealt with the nation of Israel for thousands of years.

A. God gave her birth through Abraham.

Genesis 17:5, Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

B. Jehovah delivered Israel from four hundred years of slavery in Egypt.

Exodus 12:40, Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

Nations and the Most High Lesson 4

20

C. Israel saw the glory of the Most High.

Exodus 24:17, And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. Exodus 40:34-35, Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. v. 35, And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. I Kings 8:11, So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

D. Under Solomon, Israel was established by the Most High as the greatest nation

on earth.

I Kings 10:23-24, So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. v. 24, And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

E. God judged Israel for sins.

Isaiah 9:13-17, For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts. v. 14, Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. v. 15, The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. v. 16, For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. v. 17, Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

F. God restored Israel after judgment.

Ezekiel 37:22, And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.

2. THE MOST HIGH DESTROYED BABYLON

Isaiah 14:4-6, That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! v. 5, The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers. v. 6, He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.

4. MOAB WAS JUDGED BY THE MOST HIGH

Isaiah 15:4-5, And Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his life shall be grievous unto him. v. 5, My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall flee unto Zoar, an heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction.

5. SYRIA IS UNDER A THREAT FROM JEHOVAH

Isaiah 17:1-3, The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. v. 2, The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. v. 3, The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.

6. THE MOST HIGH HAS PRONOUNCED A WOE AGAINST ETHIOPIA Isaiah 18:1-2, Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia: v. 2, That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it. v. 2, And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom. v. 3, And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

8. RUSSIA IS HEADED FOR A DEADLY CONFRONTATION WITH JEHOVAH

Ezekiel 38:1-4, And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, v. 2, Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, v. 3, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: v. 4, And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

Ezekiel 39:11-15, And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog. v. 12, And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. v. 13, Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD. v. 14, And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search. v. 15, And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.

CITIES AND THE MOST HIGH

25

INTRODUCTION: The Most High often addressed cities and towns in blessing and judgment. The people of the city create the nature of a city by their spiritual and moral behavior and by their faith or unbelief. The Almighty deals with cities. READING: Matthew 10:20-24, For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. v. 21, And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. v. 22, And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. v. 23, But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. v. 24, The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. 1. THE FIRST CITY MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE

Genesis 4:17, And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. Cain, a murderer, built the first city mentioned in the Bible.

2. BABEL, A CITY OF CONFUSION

Genesis 11:4-9, And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth, v. 5, And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

v. 6, And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. v. 7, Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. v. 8, So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. v. 9, Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Babel was a city of rebellion against the Most High. It was a city that would not believe the promises that God gave to Noah.

And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

Genesis 13:12-13, Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. v. 13, But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

THE MOST HIGH

Lesson 6

THE DEMOCRACY OF THE MOST HIGH

31

INTRODUCTION: GOD IS SOVEREIGN! He needs no help or support. The Most High moves and does His own good pleasure, which is to show Himself to be the Almighty. It gives Him great joy and pleasure to show Himself to be God unto all people. As long as man operates in God's Word and keeps His commandments, God will show him how big and powerful He is. He will manifest Himself to man. He will bare His arm and all will see that His arm is not short, so that he cannot save. THE ALMIGHTY IS OMNIPOTENT! READING: Romans 2:11, For there is no respect of persons with God. 1. THE GOLDEN TEXT OF THE BIBLE

John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God loved the whole world; let us observe the universality of the Most High God. Pagans say Christianity is "white man's religion." They have gods of anger, revenge, and hate. Heathen entities are universally biased and often antagonistic to other humans.

2. THE REVELATION OF DEMOCRACY

God is not willing for any to perish.

II Peter 3:9, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

32

3. THE MOST HIGH HAS THE POWER TO PERFORM UNBIASED

Isaiah 59:1, Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.

Men are spiritually deaf because they refuse to hear God's Word, and are blind because they refuse to acknowledge the truth of God's Word. God is going to honor His Word! He is going to move with His Power. We must realize that none of the miracles of Jesus were done in a corner. Everything that Jesus did was done openly. In open combat, He defeated satanic forces; He hates rebellion, disobedience, and deliberate transgression.

4. DEMOCRACY IN ACTION

A. God revealed Himself to Abraham.

Genesis 12:1, Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee. He was of the house of Shem, Noah's son.

B. God revealed Himself to Pharaoh. This was Ham's lineage, a son of Noah.

C. God revealed Himself to Governor Pilate. This was Japhath's lineage, Noah's

son.

D. A Roman citizen and a military officer, with his family and friends, were saved. These represent the three sons of Noah--the entire human race.

5. THE DEMOCRACY OF THE MOST HIGH IN THE CHURCH

The angel of the Lord told Philip to instruct a man from Ethiopia in the way of salvation.

A. Acts 8:27-38, And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an

eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, v. 28, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. v. 29, Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. v. 30, And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

v. 31, And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. v. 32, The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: v. 33, In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. v. 34, And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? v. 35, Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. v. 36, And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? v. 37, And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. v. 38, And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

B. Whoever seeks the Lord will be rewarded.

Acts 9:11, And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

Acts 10:34-35, Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: v. 35, But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Acts 10:43-45, To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. v. 44, While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. v. 45, And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

6. THE DEMOCRACY OF THE MOST HIGH IN ENDTIME PROPHECY

Joel 2:28-32, And it shall come to Pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: v. 29, And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

THE REVELATION NAMES OF THE MOST HIGH

35

INTRODUCTION: One major way of discovering the personality of the Most High is to study the names by which He has revealed Himself. Each name gives a specific understanding into God's redemptive dealing with the human race. The total knowledge of the Most High is not available to man in his limited environment of earth knowledge and earth experience. In a most gracious manner, God has revealed His personal attributes in the revelation of titles to His name. 1. ELOHIM WAS HIS FIRST REVELATION

A. ELOHIM is a plural noun revealing the plurality of the Most High.

B. God revealed His pluralistic nature in creation.

Genesis 1:26, And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

C. ELOHIM is unique or alone.

Exodus 20:4-6, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

v. 5, Thou shalt not bow down thy self to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me: v. 6, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

2. ELYON REVEALED AS THE MOST HIGH GOD

A. ELYON means the "Most High."

B. Melchizedek recognized God by this name.

Genesis 14:19-20, And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor, of heaven and earth: v. 20, And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

C. Abraham recognized Him as the Most High.

Genesis 14:22-23, And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, v. 23, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoe latchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich.

D. The Most High is the God who is Greater.

John 10:29, My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. John 14:28, Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. I John 3:20, For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

3. EL-SHADDAI: ABRAHAM HAD A FURTHER REVELATION OF

THE MOST HIGH

A. EL-SHADDAI means the "Almighty" and the "all-sufficient God."

B. The Most High revealed His all-sufficient, almighty character in giving a great promise to Abraham.

Philippians 4:19, But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

D. The Most High is Almighty.

Matthew 19:26, But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Revelation 19:6, And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

4. TO ISRAEL THE ALMIGHTY REVEALED HIMSELF AS JEHOVAH

A. JEHOVAH means "I Am."

B. JEHOVAH signifies the God who always is, the God who does not change.

Genesis 21:33, And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called thereon the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.

Malachi 3:6, For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

D. Exodus 20:24, An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

Here the Most High makes a covenant and a commitment to man, that in all locations where He revealed a part or position of Himself by recording His name, He would meet man and bless him there.

5. JEHOVAH JIREH: THE GOD WHO PROVIDES

A. Abraham received a wonderful promise from God.

Genesis l5:1-5, After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. v. 2, And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? v. 3, And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. v. 4, And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. v. 5, And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

B. Sarah was 91 years old and Abraham was 100 when the promise was fulfilled.

Genesis 21:1-5, And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. v. 2, For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. v. 3, And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. v. 4, And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. v. 5, And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

C. The Most High commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son of promise.

Genesis 22:1-2, And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. v. 2, And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

D. Abraham willingly followed God's directive.

Genesis 22:3-6, And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. v. 4, Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. v. 5, And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. v. 6, And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

E. Abraham knew that God would provide.

Genesis 22:7-8, And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? v. 8, And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering; so they went both of them together.

Hebrews 11:17-18, By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son. v. 18, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac thy seed be called.

F. JEHOVAH JIREH: God's provision for a sacrifice.

Genesis 22:9-14, And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. v. 10, And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. v. 11, And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. v. 12, And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

v. 13, And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. v. 14, And Abraham called the name of the place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

6. JEHOVAH REPHEKA OR JEHOVAH RAPHA--THE LORD IS

HEALER

JEHOVAH REPHEKA, the "God who heals," is an exciting name revealing the nature of the Most High.

A. God heals as part of His covenant relationship to mankind.

Exodus 15:25-26, And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, v. 26, And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

B. Healing, not sickness, is from God.

James 1:17, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

C. Healing is operative in the present-day church.

Mark 16:17-18, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; v. 18, They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

I Corinthians 12:9, To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit.

James 5:14-15, Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: v. 15, And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Romans 4:13-14, For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. v. 14, For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect.

D. Righteousness is received by faith.

Romans 9:30, What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

Lesson 8

THE MAJESTY OF THE MOST HIGH

47

INTRODUCTION: When I say, “the Most High,” I visualize a monarch crowned with a jewel-studded diadem. READING: Isaiah 6:1-3, In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. v. 2, Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. v. 3, And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 1. THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE MOST HIGH

The highest point of the divine majesty on record is in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heaven and the earth. The royal majesty of the Most High has been revealed to mankind from generation to generation as man has been ready to believe and receive.

2. HIS MAJESTY, THE MOST HIGH, INHABITS ETERNITY

Isaiah 57:15, For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

3. THE MAJESTY OF LIGHT

A. I John 1:5, This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

11. EZEKIEL SAW THE MAJESTY OF THE MOST HIGH

Ezekiel saw heaven open--the home of God. It taxed his language to describe this event. Heaven was different from what he had experienced or known before. He had to use the language of comparison. Ezekiel uses "likeness" and "appearance" because he could not fully describe the scene.

A. Ezekiel 1:13, As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was

like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

THE ALMIGHTINESS OF THE MOST HIGH

53

INTRODUCTION: The One we know as God is not a god made of earth material such as gold or precious stones, but He is the Lord God Almighty. The Elohim and Jehovah are revelations of the Almighty. He is revealed as the ruler of the universe. He is the ultimate and total source of authority and power known and revealed to man. The apostle John saw into heaven and described the throne room of God. READING: Revelation 4:8, And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. 1. IN THE BOOK OF BEGINNINGS

The Most High revealed Himself to Abraham as the Almighty, whose posterity would ultimately bring the Savior to mankind. Genesis 17:1, And When Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Therefore, God was not late in this revelation.

2. THE MOST HIGH IS OMNIPOTENT

A. The truth of the Most High has not evolved, but was created. The oldest earth writings are recorded in the book of Job. This ancient of the East said in Job 37:23, Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

Job in this one verse made five positive statements:

1) The Almighty is beyond human experience. 2) The Almighty is excellent in power. 3) The Almighty is excellent in judgment. 4) The Almighty is excellent in justice. 5) The Almighty will not afflict His people.

These truths written in past millenniums stand as basic knowledge of all human kind today.

B. The Most High reigns in omnipotence.

Revelation 19:6, And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth..

The Most High gave me this scripture while our traveling evangelistic group was captured in Southwest China. Bandits had us under gunpoint for three hours. When I felt my life threatened God spoke to me the assurance of Revelation 19:6. Within a few minutes we were released.

3. THE MOST HIGH FILLS THE HEAVEN AND EARTH WITH HIS

ALMIGHTINESS

A. Jeremiah 23:24, Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

B. I Kings 8:27, But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and

heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?

The total greatness of the Almighty cannot be limited to the heaven of heavens much less the smallness of Planet Earth.

4. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE MOST HIGH

A. Sarah had been made barren by Satanic attack against the coming of a world Messiah. Had God made a mistake in choosing Abraham, because his wife was barren? God speaks in Genesis 18:14, Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

B. Job 42:2, I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be

withholden from thee.

C. Matthew 19:26, But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

D. Luke 1:37, For with God nothing shall be impossible.

5. THE GREATNESS OF THE MOST HIGH DEMANDS PRAISE AND

OBEDIENCE OF MANKIND

A. Moses received a remarkable revelation of the Most High.

Deuteronomy 3:24, 0 Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

B. David received amazing revelation.

Psalm 77:13, Thy way, 0 God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?

Psalm 95:3, For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. Psalm 104:1, Bless the LORD, 0 my soul. 0 LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Psalm 145:3, Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

C. Isaiah came to know the almightiness of God.

Isaiah 12:6, Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

D. Jeremiah spoke of His majesty.

Jeremiah 32:18, Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name.

E. Malachi had a revelation of God's omnipotence.

Malachi 1:11, For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.

6. THE ALMIGHTINESS OF THE MOST HIGH WAS REVEALED IN THE LIFE OF JESUS

A. At birth

Luke 2:8-14, And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. v. 9, And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. v. 10, And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. v. 11, For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. v. 12, And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. v. 13, And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, v. 14, Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men.

B. At baptism

Matthew 3:13, Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

Matthew 3:16-17, And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: v. 17, And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

What an amazing trilogy of evidence. 1. Christ was in the water of Jordan. 2. The Spirit of God like a dove rested upon Him. 3. The voice from heaven proclaimed acceptance by the Most High.

THE AWESOMENESS OF THE MOST HIGH

57

INTRODUCTION: Reverend is His name. Awesome is His presence. It is a little-known truth that the only occasion the word "reverend" is used in the Bible is for God and not man. To the religious Israelites the name of God was so awesome it was seldom spoken with an audible voice. READING: Psalm 111:9, He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name. Habakkuk 2:20, But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him. 1. ADAM FIRST WITNESSED THE AWESOMENESS OF THE MOST HIGH

Genesis 3:8-10, And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the

LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. v. 9, And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? v. 10, And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

2. NOAH SAW THE AWESOMENESS OF THE MOST HIGH

A. He saw it when God closed the door of the ark.

Genesis 7:16, And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.

B. He also witnessed it at the altar, after seeing the devastation of the world.

Genesis 9:11-13, And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. v. 12, And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations. v. 13, 1 do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

3. ABRAHAM SAW THE AWESOMENESS OF THE MOST HIGH

A. The revelation came at the altar of sacrifice.

Genesis 17:1-6, And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD ap-peared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. v. 2, And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. v. 3, And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, v. 4, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. v. 5, Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. v. 6, And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

B. He acknowledged it when the people of Abimelech could have no children.

Genesis 20:17-18, So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. v. 18, For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.

C. Abraham witnessed the awesomeness as he watched Sodom burn.

Genesis 19:27-29, And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: v. 28, And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. v. 29, And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

6. DAVID DESCRIBED HIS AWESOMENESS

A. Psalm 4:4, (KJV) Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

(Moffat) Tremble at it and give over sinning, bethink yourselves at night and hold your peace.

9. DANIEL KNEW AWESOMENESS

Daniel 10:5-11, Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: v. 6, His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. v.7, And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vi-sion; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. v. 8, Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. v. 9, Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground. v. 10, And, behold, an hand touched me., which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. v. 11, And he said unto me, 0 Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.

10. AT THE BIRTH OF CHRIST THE MOST HIGH REVEALED HIS AWESOMENESS

A. To Mary

Luke 1:26-32, And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, v. 27, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. v. 28, And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. v. 29, And when she was him, she was troubled at this saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. v. 30, And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. v. 31, And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. v. 32, He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.

THE HOLINESS OF THE MOST HIGH

89

INTRODUCTION: There are no holy gods among the deities of mankind except Jehovah God.

A. What is the Most High? The Most High is holy. B. The angels cry, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty." C. The Most High God possesses moral excellence. D. The Most High has spiritual purity. E. The Most High has incomprehensible and absolute holiness. F. God's holiness knows no limits. G. The Most High said, "Be ye holy as I am holy." H. Hebrews 12:14, . . . holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. I. Holy is healthy. Whatever is holy is healthy. Sin is moral, physical, spiritual

sickness. To preserve His holiness, God must destroy that which destroys His holy person and His holy kingdom. By imputation, God places His holiness in the heart of man.

READING: Exodus 15:11, Who is like unto thee, 0 LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Psalm 99:9, Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

3. THE MOST HIGH GOD NEVER FAILS

Joshua 23:14, And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

SUBSTITUTES FOR THE MOST HIGH

109

INTRODUCTION: It has been advertised: "Beware of substitutes!" A substitute according to Webster's Dic-tionary is: "To take the place of another, to replace." Usually we expect substitutes to be inferior in quality. Substitutes for the Most High is the greatest tragedy of human history. Evidently there was little or no substitute for the Most High before Noah and the global flood. The main reason for this was that men lived almost a thousand years and it was only about 2,000 years from Adam to Noah. After the deluge, substitutes for the Most High proliferated. READING: Exodus 20:3-6, Thou shalt have no other gods before me. v. 4, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. v. 5, Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; v. 6, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my command-ments. Romans 1:18, 25, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. v. 25, Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

1. ANIMISM

Animism is probably the earth's oldest religious delusion. It is known on all continents and among the most primitive people. It could be called pantheism-or the belief that everything is God.

A. Animism is a religious dogma teaching that all elements in the world have

spirits and souls. Lifeless objects such as mountains, caves, and stones are worshiped. Also, trees and other flora possess spirit life.

B. Animism is a religion of spirits. In past history Animism has especially thrived

among illiterate cultures with little knowledge of Jehovah God. The worshipers delve deeply into superstition and witchcraft.

C. Animism teaches that all material objects are possessed or pervaded by life and

are indwelt with spirits. D. In the Philippines, I visited a Luzon tribe whose center of worship was a

particular tree in the village. Even the tree looked demon possessed. It was crooked; it was gnarled; it was leafless. It was greasy from people's hands rubbing on it to receive answers to their prayer and from offerings.

E. Fetishism is the belief in the power of inanimate objects and the veneration of

objects such as sticks, stones, and bones. These objects are often addressed in prayer and given offerings.

F. There is a practice of witchcraft that sends spirits into and out of humans. When

he is worshiping, the witchdoctor, sorcerer, or medicine man will work himself into a frenzy, repeating words and dancing with movements of his body to drum beating.

2. THE EGYPTIAN GODS

A. In Moses' day Egypt had magicians who served and directed the king. Exodus 7:11, Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now

the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. B. At that point in time, the king of Egypt directed his affairs of state by the use of

“wise men.” These were prognosticators of the future--men who dealt in the unknown and supernatural. They were not just educated men.

D. Egyptians prayed to the sun god, Ra. This god lived in the sacred bull named

Apis. The great temple of Apis was located in Memphis, Egypt.

E. Egyptians had a cat-headed goddess. They also worshiped the beetle and the cow.

F. The following are some of the gods that the Egyptians worshiped:

(1) Ra or Re--the sun god (2) Shu--the air god (3) Knummu--the god with a man's body and a ram's head (4) Sekhmet--the god with a lion's head and a woman's body (5) Pharaohs--priest/ kings

3. THE BABYLONIANS HAD A VAST PANTHEON OF GODS

A. Shamash--the sun god B. Sim--the moon god C. Ishtar--the goddess of fertility D. Marduk--lord of heavens and a creator. He had wings and carried a sword and

sickle. E. Their gods were:

(1) Sun (2) Moon (3) Sky (4) Earth (5) Water

4. THE HINDUS HAVE MORE THAN 300 MILLION GODS

A. The most popular god of Hinduism is Krishna who says, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "Whatever god a man worships, it is I who answers the prayer."

B. Hinduism is a vital religious force that has persisted. This force is demonic. It

rejects the Lord Jesus Christ. Hinduism offers no communion with God. C. Hinduism claims to offer transcendental experiences. It claims to offer the

supernatural. Hinduism can do this by the power of the devil. D. Yoga is Hindu philosophy. It teaches a supreme being. It teaches human

emancipation. To do this, it demands physically unnatural postures, the withdrawal from material objects, and the concentration of the mind on something outside itself. It is a way of work, a way of thought, a way of faith.

E. Worship of the cow

(1) One of the prominent gods of the Hindus is the sacred cow. Mahatma Gandhi said, "Cow protection is to me one of the most wonderful phenomena in human evolution. It takes the human being beyond his species. The cow to me means the entire sub-human world. Man, through the cow, is enjoined to realize his identity with all that lives. She is the mother of millions of Indian mankind. The cow is a poem of pity. Protection of the cow means protection of the whole dumb creation of god."

Montier-Williams wrote, "The cow is of all animals the most sacred. Every part of its body is inhabited by some deity or other. Every hair on its body is inviolable, all its excreta are hollowed."

I have personally witnessed the funeral of a cow in India. The dead carcass had garlands of flowers around its neck. It was lying on its back on an ox cart with flowers tied around its hoofs. People were singing and dancing through the street on the way to the funeral, some of whom were under a strange power, swaying from side to side. The driver of my rickshaw said foreigners were not safe on the street during this procession.

(2) Hinduism gave the world the hereditary caste system--a system that determines a person's social status by the caste of his birth. Hinduism grinds immortal human outcasts down, while making gods of cows. These are the pariahs or “untouchables” who are outside the caste system of India.

Hinduism defiled the rivers of India. Hundreds come to die beside these waters. Afterwards their bodies are cremated and their ashes thrown upon the water.

I have been in and out of Hindu temples many times, and as a servant of God, I have felt the opposing, depressing forces of the devil. Some of the Hindu priests are so possessed that when our eyes met there was a spiritual conflict. This is not true of other non-Christian places of worship. I have been in many Muslim mosques but have not felt this same spirit.

F. Hinduism has three major deities. They especially honor three divine

personifications: (1) The destroyer, Siva, also a creator--a dancing figure with four arms. (2) The creator, Brahma. (3) The preserver, Vishnu--sleeping god, dreaming.

5. SHINTOISM

Shintoism is the state religion of Japan, consisting of more than 65 million adherents, mostly Japanese. Shintoism is as old as the Japanese culture.

It placed divinity upon the emperor of Japan. Many still believe it although it is not authorized.

A. Shinto means "Shin-Tao, god-way, or way of the gods or spirits." (1) Worship nature (2) Worship ancestors (3) Worship ancient heroes

B. Shinto religion is different. (1) They have no holy book. (2) There are many sects.

C. Shinto worship involves: (1) Rituals (2) Customs (3) Pilgrimages (4) Worship of many gods

6. BUDDHISM HONORS THE MAN-GOD BUDDHA

A. When visiting the borders of Tibet, I often slept in Buddhist temples along the road because no tourist facilities were available. I saw many heathen idols--as many as 10,000 gods in one temple. We examined plaster of Paris purgatories, painted red, where Buddhists paid money to gain purification and release.

B. In Yunan Province, I pointed at a strange, grotesque, ugly god and asked the local priest how this god could help him as it had no life. The Chinese priest bowed graciously and pointed toward the back of the idol and said, "Normally the idol could not help you, but do you see this hole? This is where the spirit of this idol goes in and out. If a gift is placed in front of this god and prayer is made, he quickly comes inside and then he can answer the prayers of the worshiper."

Instantly I saw the relationship of I Corinthians 10:20, But I say, that the things

which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

7. THE GREEKS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT TIMES HAD MANY

GODS A. The Greeks had a god for everything.

(1) Zeus--the great sky father ruling in the upper air (2) Apollo--the sun god (3) Pan--the god of the fields, forests, wild animals, flocks, and shepherds

The lower part of his torso was that of a goat and the upper half of his torso that of a human with goat horns and ears.

(4) Poseidon--god of the sea and of horses (5) It was believed that these gods could avert evil, heal sicknesses, bless

actions such as birth, death, and marriage. The Greeks would get the approval of the gods for journeys or for planting and reaping.

(6) Their gods married and had children. Zeus (supreme deity) and his wife, Hera (queen of the gods and goddess of women and marriage) had a son named Hercules. He became the god of strength and courage.

B. In the Temple of Delphi

(1) Apollo, the god of music, poetry, prophecy, and medicine, was represented by Pythia, the high priestess.

(2) Delphi was located at a vent in the earth, and intoxicating vapors supposedly came out when Pythia muttered words from Apollo.

C. Artemis--virginal deity

(1) Artemis was the lover of children. (2) Artemis was Apollo's twin sister, goddess of the moon, and also in charge

of hunters and wild animals. (3) She became Artemis of Ephesus, a motherly goddess of fertility, covered

with breasts.

D. Athena (1) Goddess of wisdom (2) Goddess of skills (3) Goddess of warfare

E. Aphrodite

(1) Goddess of love (2) Goddess of beauty (3) The Romans called her Venus. (4) These phantom gods caused nations and cities to rise and fall. They

demanded sacrifice and worship.

F. Athens

(1) Here amid the polytheistic atmosphere of the Greek culture was born the mysterious rites and initiations into the secret societies known only to the initiates. The candidates underwent a preparatory purification, such as washing in the sea. Then the instruction in the mystic knowledge was usually given behind closed doors in the Mystic Hall, a solemn beholding of sacred objects, followed by an enactment of a pageant or play, climaxed by a crowning or wreathing of each of the candidates as a full-fledged initiate.

(2) Some included nightlong ceremonies, drinking of wine, and learning to be possessed by a god.

(3) This was their ultimate experience--to find an excitingly satisfying way for the Greeks to feel the gods within them, and thus to share in their immortal nature, and be made into their appearance.

(4) This was the way of the mystics--a way that offered its individuals private and personal religious satisfaction and assurance not felt in all the other public and private worship ceremonies.

8. ISLAM HONORS THE PROPHET MOHAMMED

A. The Muslim religion is unique. (1) It is younger than Christianity, having originated in the sixth century A.D. (2) It is the only world religion that has conquered certain Christian areas and

turned the people back to a non-Christian religion. (3) Today, Islam can boast of having the second largest religious population

in the world--nearly 700 million, possibly 100 million of them living in Asia.

B. Mohammed

Mohammed was born on the bleaching desert of Arabia about 570 A.D. History records him as one of the most influential persons ever to live. Little is known of his youth. His good fortune began at the age of 25 when he was employed by a wealthy widow named Khadijah. She found him so charming and capable in managing her commercial caravans that she later married him. With newly gained wealth and prestige, Mohammed pursued his consuming desire. He often retired to a cave to meditate on religion. One day while meditating, he saw a vision which changed his destiny. Mohammed returned to his people and announced himself a prophet of Allah. His wife believed in him and became his first convert. His adopted children followed. Eventually Khadijah, who was much older than Mohammed, died. Within a year he married three more wives. One had been the wife of one of his adopted sons; another a Jewish woman, and another a Coptic Christian. We can be certain that Mohammed heard of the Old and New Testament stories from these women.

9. THE APOSTLE PAUL PREDICTED A GREAT SUBSTITUTE FOR THE MOST HIGH IN THE END TIME.

A. 1 Timothy 4:1, Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.

B. I Thessalonians 5:1-5, But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no

need that I write unto you. v. 2, For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a

thief in the night. v. 3, For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction

cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

v. 4, But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

v. 5, Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

II Peter 3:3-9, Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, v. 4, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. v. 5, For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: v. 6, Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: v. 7, But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. v. 8, But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. v. 9, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

MY PERSONAL SEARCH FOR THE MOST HIGH

123

READING:

John 4:24, God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Acts 17:24, God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

II Corinthians 3:17, Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

1. PERSONAL PENETRATION

I have sat and meditated in the prow of great ocean liners plowing the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. I have looked intently at the glittering orbs of the starry dome of heaven, from the Inside Passage of Alaska to the Coral Sea of Australia and heard my soul cry, "What is God like?"

I wanted more than anything to know God on a personal basis.

I have sought to know God in watching His brilliance in the sunsets of the Alps in Switzerland, turning white silvery peaks into brilliant pink and golds. Words cannot describe the grandeur my spirit reached as I cried to Jehovah for more knowledge of the Most High.

2. PERSONAL SEARCH FOR THE MOST HIGH

Louise and I spent our honeymoon at Niagara Falls, Canada. We felt the earth tremble and listened to the roar of the mighty cataract, and our souls cried out, "What is the Most High like?" When we held our newborn sons, Frank, Stephen, and Peter in our arms for the first time, we whispered, "Oh, what is God like? He is the Most High!"

3. THE WORD AND THE MOST HIGH Louise and I have discovered that the highest form of knowledge regarding the Most High is contained in His Word, so we continually search the Bible for truth.

4. MY HEALING AND PROMISE

Isaiah 41:10-11, Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. v. 11, Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.

5. MY MISSIONARY CALL

Ezekiel 3:17-18, Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. v. 18, When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

6. MY CONFIRMATION WORD

John 15:16, Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

OBSTRUCTIONS TO KNOWING THE MOST HIGH

125

INTRODUCTION: These lessons would not be complete if we did not warn you that there will be obstructions to try to hinder you in your quest for the Most High God. READING: Zechariah 3:1-4, And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. v. 2, And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, 0 Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? v. 3, Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. v. 4, And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. 1. SATAN

A. He lied in Eden. Genesis 3:1-6, Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? v. 2, And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: v. 3, But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. v. 4, And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: v. 5, For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

v. 6, And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

B. He closed Sarah's womb.

Genesis 18:11-13, Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. v. 12, Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? v. 13, And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

C. He deceived the sons of God.

Genesis 6:1-5, And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, v. 2, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. v. 3, And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. v. 4, There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. v. 5, And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

D. He caused King Saul to turn to witchcraft rather than the Most High.

I Samuel 28:6-16, And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. v. 7, Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. v. 8, And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee. v. 9, And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

v. 10, And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. v. 11, Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. v. 12, And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. v. 13, And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. v. 14, And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. v. 15, And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. v. 16, Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

2. THE MIND

If you think without divine guidance, you cannot discover the Most High.

A. Jeremiah 17:9, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

B. II Corinthians 10:5, Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

C. Romans 8:6-7, For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

v. 7, Because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

D. Ephesians 2:3, Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

E. Mark 7:20-23, And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

v. 21, For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, v. 22, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: v. 23, All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Abandonment to carnal desires will keep one from knowing the Most High.

A. Romans 7:5, For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

B. Romans 8:5, For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

C. Galatians 5:16-21, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

v. 17, For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

v. 18, But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. v. 19, Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery,

fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, v. 20, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife,

seditions, heresies, v. 21, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I

tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

D. Galatians 6:8, For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption;

but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

E. John 6:63, It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

F. I Peter 2:11, Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.

4. THE WORLD

Satan offered Christ the nations and their glory. No one can be obsessed with loving the world and knowing the Most High.

A. Matthew 4:8-10, Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

v. 9, And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

v. 10, Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

B. Mark 4:19, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

C. John 15:18-19, If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated

you. v. 19, If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye

are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

D. Romans 12:2, And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by

the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

E. II Corinthians 4:4, In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of

them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

F. Galatians 1:4, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this

present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father.

G. James 4:4, Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
