Mosaic Community Gardens

• Program/Project Overview: • Five community gardens – our gardens provide

more than 80 garden beds for community planting each year

• Mosaic offers seeds, plants, tools, water and other resources needed to be a successful gardener

• Monthly workshops are held to help educate and empower our members and our community

• Garden participation by organizations – Pottstown High School, Creative Health, KenCrest, Art Fusion19464, Olivet’s Boys and Girls Club, The Hill School and many other others

• A Permaculture Garden was added in 2015 thanks to funding from Genesis Housing/National Penn Bank –

What is it? : An agricultural ecosystem intended to be sustainable and self- sufficient • More than 150 students from the area ranging

from 1st – 12th grade participate in weekly programming at the gardens each summer. Our program focuses on gardening, arts, nutrition and fitness.

Community Outlook

Success in addressing the challenges reported in 2013 Needs Assessment Report and Beyond:

• Educate: Outreach, advocacy and awareness; programs

within each organization are built to empower and inform.

• Economical Challenges, Low-Cost Membership/Programs: Our programs encourage everyone to join. All-inclusive, low-cost or free programming. Many opportunities within each organizations do not require membership (events, workshops).

• Fight Obesity: Weight loss or healthy weight maintenance programs; programs designed to make goals attainable and natural to achieve. Programs work directly to combat the obesity issues in our area.

• Improved Access to Healthy Foods: partner with two area farms for CSA Scholarship Program

• Taking pride and great care of the community families live in and surrounding areas

• Learning more about area ecosystems • Long-term recovery for those who have struggled with

recovery in the past Our organization is unmatched in innovative programs designed to connect communities in Pottstown and surrounding area while developing long-term behavior changes in children and adults.

Collaboration

Continue to Combine Efforts, Resources – Increase community opportunities during the garden

season encouraging families to volunteer, get active, healthy, and to participate thereby increasing the positive impact throughout the area

Capacity Building

– Empower the entire family to make positive changes by offering well-rounded, complete programs

• Gardening, nutrition, fitness, indoor/outdoor, water sports, music, arts and culture

– Create more volunteer opportunities through our programs in order to continually gain volunteers, members and donors

Sustainability – Funding, In-Kind and Volunteer – National Penn, Genesis Housing Corporation, Exelon, John

Middleton, Lowes, Home Depot and other local business, neighbors and schools “so-far, so-good”

• Businesses bring corporate attention, sponsorship and support to our area

• Neighbors and schools spread the word and increase program and volunteer participation

– Increase donor/support base by creating more avenues and easier ways for people to give

• Amazon Smile • Card Readers allowing for additional giving using

debit and credit cards
