December 2018 Newsletter Upcoming Events MKU recently held its’ 2018 STEM Career Day, where students interacted with local professionals and tested emerging technologies, such as Virtual Reality goggles and 3D printers. Dec. 4-JV Basketball vs Madison #1 (5:00PM-Girls’; 6:00PM-Boys’) Dec.5-Varsity Basketball vs Cartwright (5:00PM-Girls’; 6:00PM-Boys’) Dec.6-Governing Board Meet- ing at Isaac District Office (5:00PM-7:00PM) Dec.11-JV Basketball vs Meadows (5:00PM-Girls’; 6:00PM-Boys’) Dec.12-FEAT Meeting at MKU (Parent Educator Room- 10:30AM-11:30AM) Dec.12-JV Basketball vs Harris (5:00PM-Girls’; 6:00PM-Boys’) 7th & 8th Graders enrolled in MKU’s Latinos in Action course have begun frequenting Butler Elementary to provide tutoring services for elementary students. e MKU Lady Yellowjackets had a strong season, making it to the championship game and finishing as runner-ups. MKU was the only VAC school to have its boys’ and girls’ soc- cer programs advance to the finals. Highlights *MKU has been awarded a Verizon Innovative Learning Lab, one of only five schools in the nation to be awarded this incredible grant. e VIL Lab is a partnership between Verizon, Heart of America Foundation, and Arizona State University to construct a state-of-the-art space in our school, outfitted with the latest in immersive technology and hands-on learning experiences. Elective courses will be offered in the lab, starting with the Fall 2019 semester. Students will be able to take courses including: Immersive Media (AR/VR), Digital Product Innovation, Coding, and Artificial Intelligence. e lab will be completed by the end of December 2018 and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held in early 2019. We are so excited to offer this incredible opportunity to create a positive impact for our students, teachers, and community. *Recently, MKU has begun hosting its’ Family Engagement Action Team (FEAT) meetings. ese meetings bring together parents, teachers, Mr. Glay, and Ms. Salgado, our Parent Educator to increase parent engagement at our school.
