New Acquisitions to the North Jersey History & Genealogy Center of the Morristown-Morris Township Library

By Carolyn Dorsey Department Staff

Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607-1624/5 fourth edition Genealogical Publishing Co. 2007 H 975.5 adv. V. 1&2 This three volume series establishes descendants of the individuals who both came to Virginia in the period 1607-1625 and had descendants or who did not come to Virginia within that period but whose grandchildren were residents there. The foundation for this series is a "Muster" of January-February 1624/25-a census taken by the Royal Commission to determine the extent and composition of the Jamestown settlements. Cemeteries in Hunterdon County, N.J. & those interred Compiled by Fred Lathrop, M.D. H3Hu1 Lat The names of those interred in Hunterdon County cemeteries have been assembled by Dr. Fred Lathrop from data from the card files of the late genealogist, Dr. Deats (now at the Hunterdon County Historical Society Library), the Boy Scouts, and from the Morristown/Morris Township and Rutgers Libraries.

A Note from last year’s President By Bob Stein

Once again we had a very successful year. During difficult financial times in the nation we maintained our membership at 260. We adapted to the Morristown/Morris Township Library explosion by redirecting activities to the Morris County Library. Our officer team worked tirelessly to hold down our costs while delivering more to our members. We now offer email copies of our Newsletter which should reduce our largest expenditures, thus freeing more money for speakers without increasing our fees. We have added two new Special Interest Groups (SIG) bringing our total to six. They include: 1. German and Eastern European 2. Computer Genealogy and Family History Writing 3. Beginners and Beyond 4. Brick Walls 5. DNA 6. Italian.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you these past five years.

Special Interest Groups

German/Eastern European SIG., led by Louis Andrews, meets in the Morris County Library in the room across the hall from where the General Meeting is held. The meeting time is from 10 to 12

Noon on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, even in the summer months. Their focus is on European roots using

census, church and civil records. For more information contact Lou Andrews. mailto:[email protected] Computer Genealogy and Family History Writing SIG, led by Ruth Daniels, meets from 9:30 to 11:30 on the 3rd Friday of the month at the Morris County Library in the same room as the General Meeting is held. The discussions range from online links and websites, Historic Newspapers, NYC records, even how to use Family Tree Maker and many organizational tips. For more information contact Ruth Daniels. mailto:[email protected] Beginners and Beyond SIG, led by Linnea Foster, meets from 1 to 3 on the

3rd Monday of the month, from September to June, at the Morris County Library in the large meeting room. A wide variety of subjects are discussed to assist everyone with their genealogical research

whether new or more experienced. For more information contact Linnea Foster. mailto:[email protected] Brick Walls SIG, now led by Susan Simon, meets from 10 to 12 Noon in the room across the hall from the General Meeting room on the 2nd Friday of every month at the Morris County Library. The members have access to their private internet group in Yahoo where

they can share their information and files and also email other members with suggestions to further their research. There is a calendar that members can use to

schedule their brick wall to be discussed during the upcoming meeting. For more information contact Susan Simon. mailto:[email protected] DNA SIG The DNA group, which is led by Jim Short, currently consists of 16 members. Lately our meetings have been held on the 2nd or 3rd Thursday of the month or whatever evening the larger upstairs room is available from 7:00 - 8:30. We go over whatever questions a member has, the success or failures

people have had in using DNA to connect to others, where to list your results so you have the best chance to make a connection, and the various types of tests

currently used such as Y-DNA, X-DNA, Mitochondria DNA, and Autosomal DNA. For more information contact Jim. mailto:[email protected] Our newest Italian SIG This group is led by Susan Kehr. A big CIAO to the founding members of our newest special interest group on Italian

genealogy research. We had our first meeting on June 15, 2011 and shared what we wanted to get out of the SIG, and what our current Italian research problems are. Pretty much, everyone wants to know how to get documentation out of Italy. We decided on a communication format, and a private Yahoo! Group has been set up, titled MAGS_Italian_SIG. We already have website links on the site! Being a private group means that one must request to join the group and be accepted in order to have access to the information we will store there, and to be able to communicate with everyone in the group. All you need to join a Yahoo! Group is to get a free Yahoo! ID, and in our case request to join. The group leader will accept you and you're in. NO $$$. You will, however, be required to be a paid member of MAGS to take advantage of this MAGS SIG. We plan on meeting once a month, every month. Starting in September we will meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month, 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM at the Morris County Library in the small conference room on the first floor, opposite the room where MAGS holds its monthly evening meeting. (Since this newsletter article will be printed in the September Newsletter, you will have already missed our July and August meetings; sorry about that.) We have no Italian genealogy specialists, only genealogists dabbling in

various and sundry ways to getting Italian information. We will share our experiences and results and, hopefully, along the way to Italian genealogical knowledge we will also gain friendships.

Morris County Marriages by Linnea B. Foster

The following is a continuation of the abstract of Book G of Morris County Marriage Records. An explanation of these records may be found in Vol. 6 No. 3 (Sep. 1993) and Vol. 17 No. 3 (Dec. 2004). The marriages have been abstracted in the order in which they were recorded. The name of the minister or official and the date recorded is shown for each group of marriages. The first column shows the page number in Book G; the second column shows the date of the marriages; the third column shows the names of the bride and groom and other information that appears in the original record.

MOUNT OLIVE BAPTIST CHURCH BOOK I – THE RECORDS

The establishment of the Mount Olive Baptist Church dates back over 200 years. The first church, a Log Meeting House, was built in 1753 with a seating capacity for 40 persons. The next church building used seated 75 persons and was completed in 1813. In 1855 the present building was erected. In 1874, letters of dismissal were given 28 members who formed a new Baptist Church at Drakesville, now Ledgewood, and in 1888, the Netcong Baptist Church was formed when 36 members were granted dismissal. The former name of Schooley’s Mountain Church was changed in 1832 to the Mount Olive Baptist Church. (from Church brochure) (continued from Vol 24 No 2) Baptisms at Mt.
