Life jackets and life preserv-ers are mandatory items inmost states. They can literallybe a lifeline for a person who isinjured or having trouble stay-ing afloat in the water.

In 2006 of the 710 recre-ational boating fatalities 90 per-cent of those victims were notwearing life jackets. Therefore, life jackets and other personalflotation devices (PFDs) shouldalways be present and used cor-rectly when in or around thewater.New Styles and Innovations

Everyone aboard the vesselshould be wearing a life jacketthat fits him or her snugly.Newer models of life jackets aremore comfortable than ever be-fore. This eliminates complaintsfrom those who might think lifejackets are too hot, bulky or un-attractive to wear.

It is extremely important tofind life jackets that fit correctly, and ones approved by the U.S.Coast Guard. Life jackets oftenhave weight limits that shouldbe heeded, especially for chil-dren. A PFD too big or too smallfor an individual will fail to of-

fer the same level of protectionas one designed to protect aperson of a particular weightand stature.

In regard to styles and inno-vations, newer life jackets aren’tthe bright orange models ofyears past. Today life jacketscome in a range of colors andstyles - some especially de-signed for specific water sportsor recreational uses. There areeven life jackets that inflatewhen a person hits the water, greatly reducing bulk, increas-ing mobility and flexibility.

New Way of ThinkingMany boaters and water en-

thusiasts simply store life jack-ets on their boat and assumedoing so is protection enough. The fact of the matter is, boat-ing accidents or emergenciescan happen in a matter of min-utes. There may not be enoughtime to grab a life jacket andbuckle it up in a dangerous situ-ation. Failing to wear a lifejacket at all times puts your lifeat risk and the other people ona boat. Wearing your life jacketwill allow you to be safe in caseof an accident and will also al-low you the ability to assist oth-ers that may be in danger.

(MS) - Fishing is a sport thatcaptivates many people. It pro-vides more than just a chancefor a leisurely getaway; fishingis also big business. Accordingto the American SportfishingAssociation (ASA), there are 40million anglers in the UnitedStates alone. Fishing enthusi-asts and people who fish for aliving help to employ the manu-facturers of fishing poles, lures, tackle boxes, and all of the othernecessities for the sport. It is es-timated that $45 billion in retailsales are generated each yearfrom sportfishing All across thecountry, anglers cast their linesfor fun - and new fishing re-cruits sign up every season.

There are many differenttypes of fishing, so you’rebound to find a method youwill enjoy. Here’s a look at someof the popular types.

Fishing line fishing: This isby far the most popular type offishing around. Using a rod andline, a fisherman attempts tohook a fish with a hook andbait.

Hand fishing: This type offishing is just what the nameimplies. A person uses his orher hands to catch a fish, suchas in lobster or pearl diving. Insome areas of the southern U.S.catfish are caught this way. Thistype of fishing for catfish is

The different types of fishingcalled noodling.

Trolling: This is a form offishing that involves drawingthe fishing lure through the wa-ter in order to attract fish. Thismethod is often used when fish-ing for big game fish such asmarlin and tuna.

Bow/Spear fishing: Aprimitive type of fishing wherea person stands above the wa-ter to shoot or spear a fish. Inthe past the spears were hand-thrown and the bows hand-powered. Today, automaticspear guns and pneumaticbows help propel the weaponat the target.

Dredging: This method en-tails attaching a large net orchain mesh behind a boat toscoop up fish. Commonly usedto catch scallops and oysters itis typically associated withcommercial fishing.

Fishing can take place on theshore, while standing in the wa-ter or aboard a boat. Regardlessof the type, the end result is tocatch a meal or a trophy fish.Still, most sportfishing enthusi-asts simply fish for the thrill, and then throw their catch back.Bait Fishing vs. Spin Fishing

Sportfishermen typically usetwo main methods of catchingfish when line fishing.

Bait fishing involves usinglive or dead bait attached to a

hook. Depending upon the fishsought out, the bait will eitherlie on the hook at the bottom ofthe water, be jigged to attractthe fish, or slowly reeled in tocatch a fish’s eye.

Fishing is a sport enjoyed by millions of people across the country.

(ARA) – Caring for the envi-ronment means caring for a full, green lawn. Properly maintain-ing your lawn will producestrong grass and can help pro-tect and conserve water re-sources at the same time.

Regular care and lawn main-tenance is especially importantif you live near large bodies offresh water like the Great Lakes.Containing more than 90 per-cent of the fresh surface waterin the United States, the GreatLakes provide more than 40million Americans and Canadi-ans with drinking water.

To enjoy a great lawn andprotect fresh water resources forgenerations to come, followthese lawn care tips from theexperts at The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and the Alliancefor the Great Lakes:

• Strong, dense lawns canhelp reduce run off and erosion, and filter rainwater to rechargegroundwater supplies. Thefoundation of a good lawn isrich soil, so use a mulchingmower to return grass clippingsto the soil where the clippingsbreak down and recycle nutri-ents back into the grass.

• Generally, only new lawnsrequire additional phosphorusfor root growth. For maturelawns, choose a fertilizer that islow-phosphorus or phospho-rus-free, unless a soil test showsa need for more.

Have a great lawn that’s good to the earth

• The best time to fertilize isin the spring and fall. Never fer-tilize when the ground is frozen.

• Use a drop spreader or ro-tary spreader with a side guardto keep fertilizer on the lawn.

• Sweep any grass clippingsand fertilizer that land on drive-ways and sidewalks back on tothe lawn to help keep nutrientsout of waterways.

• Set your mower to its high-est setting to build strong, deepgrass roots that can find waterand nutrients. Longer grass canalso better withstand periods ofheat and drought.

• If your lawn is dry, the besttime to water it is in the morn-ing. Water easily evaporates inthe afternoon and watering atnight can cause fungus and dis-ease.

• When lawn problems arise,

select the right product for thetask. For small problems, use aspot treatment. For numerousproblems throughout the yard, use a broadcast application.

• Use native plants in yourlandscape and garden. Theseplants are adapted to your areaand better able to tolerate ad-verse conditions and resist dis-ease.

• Avoid application whenrain is in the forecast, as heavyrainfall can overwhelm soilsand cause fertilizers to bewashed into waterways.

• Storm sewers often leaddirectly into streams and lakes.Never dispose of clippings orpet waste in or around sewersor water resources, such as riv-ers, lakes and streams. Make ita habit to sweep up any fertil-izer, grass clippings and leaves.

With the warmer weatherupon us, individuals who havebeen hibernating indoors willonce again be venturing outsideto enjoy Mother Nature. Thatalso means taking boats andother water crafts out of dry dockto return them to the water foruse.

To ensure a safe boating sea-son, spring preparation andchecking of the vessel are highlyrecommended. No matter howcarefully a boat is stored for thewinter, there will be routinemaintenance to take care of be-fore the boat can once again hitthe water.

Here is a handy checklist youcan use as you examine yourboat and ready it for the new sea-son.

Prepare boats for spring season• clean the hull, deck and

topsides with a mild detergent• apply a good coat of wax• clean and polish any metal• clean and oil any wood sur-

faces• make sure drains and scup-

pers are clear• clean the interior• check and update tools and

spare parts• inspect boat for abrasions,

scratches and gouges, and repairthem

• inspect swim platform andladder

• clean and grease winches• check lifelines for integrity• tighten all connections in

your boat such as seats, livewellhinges, hull supports, floors, fishfinders, electrical switches, troll-

ing motor mounts and anythingelse you can find

• inspect conditions of en-gines, hoses and clamps

• check and change fuel filters• check transmission fluid• check battery water level• check for spare fuses• inspect all lights• make sure electronics are

functioning properly• ensure your registration is

current• inspect sails and ropes (if

applicable)• make sure you have all the

appropriate safety gear andequipment to comply with theboating regulations for the boatyou have

• check out your first aid kitand replenish supplies

(ARA) – Planting a garden, spring cleaning, fertilizing thelawn — we all have lots of workto do with the coming of spring. But pets also have health andsafety needs this time of yearthat their owners should knowabout.

“I see it all the time in myclinic in the springtime. Animalsget into fertilizers and pesti-cides, those used on a home oron a farm, and it makes the ani-mals sick,” says Dr. James Cook, president of the American Vet-erinary Medical Association.“People need to be aware ofthese potential hazards. Alongwith better weather, the springbrings with it the use of a num-ber of common lawn chemicalsand the blooming of plants thatcan be hazardous to pets.”

Top 10 spring tips for pet ownersyour pets off, abide by it.

• Pesticides and herbicides:It’s probably not surprising thatthese chemicals can be toxic toyour pets, but, even whenthey’re not lethal, there are somelong-term health concerns. Stud-ies indicate the use of pesticidesand herbicides may be tied to in-creased rates of specific forms ofcancer in dogs. If your pet is ex-posed, wash them with soap andwater immediately and call yourveterinarian.

• Cocoa bean mulch: It’s be-coming common to mulch a gar-den with the fragrant spentshells of cocoa beans. But justlike chocolate, dogs like to eatthem and they are toxic.

• Lilies: Lilies are a flowercommon in the spring, and theyare very, very toxic to cats. Cats

Here are the AVMA’s top 10spring hints for pet owners:

• Fleas and ticks: They canbe tiny, little more than a pin-head in some instances, but theygrow and spread quickly oncethey find a host. The preventa-tive treatments that you mayhave discontinued in the wintershould start early in the springto keep your pet’s coat, and yourhome, free of pests.

• Lawn fertilizers: Lawn fer-tilizers are very toxic to pets.Store fertilizers in a place farfrom where your dog or cat —and children— can get at it. Af-ter applying it to your lawn, fol-low manufacturer instructionson how long you should waitbefore allowing your pet into thearea. If you see a sign posted ona lawn that tells you to keep

will often chew them, and evensmall amounts can lead to kid-ney failure and death.

• Rhubarb leaves: Rhubarbmakes a fine pie and it’s a staplein many vegetable gardens, butthe leaves are poisonous and cancause kidney failure. For a com-plete list of plants and plantingsthat can be dangerous to pets, visit www.avma.org.

• Rat and mouse poisons:Controlling vermin becomes anissue again in the spring. Beaware that the same propertiesof common rat and mouse poi-sons that make them irresistibleto pests will also attract your pet.If consumed, these can be fatalto your animal.

• Cleaning products: Springcleaning is an annual traditionin many households, but make

sure the cleaning products don’thurt your animals. If the labelstates “keep pets and childrenaway from area until dry” fol-low those instructions carefully, and store all chemicals out ofreach of children and pets.

• Paint and paint thinners:If you’re putting a fresh coat ofpaint on the house, keep the petsaway. Paint thinners, mineralspirits and other solvents cancause severe irritation or chemi-cal burns if swallowed or evenif they come in contact with yourpet’s skin. Latex house paintstypically produce a minor stom-ach upset, but some specialtypaints may contain heavy met-als or volatile substances thatcould be harmful if ingested

• Preventative medications:Consult with your veterinarian

about seasonal medications tokeep your pet healthy. For ex-ample, in many parts of thecountry, heartworm medica-tions for dogs are often discon-tinued in the winter. Springtimeis the season to restart this medi-cation to keep your dog free ofthis parasite. But keep in mindthat manufacturer’s instructionswarn that heartworm medica-tions should not be given with-out first visiting your veterinar-ian to ensure that your pet hasnot developed the heartwormparasite. A simple blood testwill give you that peace ofmind.

Few and far between are thehomeowners who have thetime to cultivate a greenthumb. Be it obligations at theoffice, full schedules with thefamily or, most likely, a littlebit of both, many timeshomeowners are understand-ably quick to trust their land-scaping to a local professional.

But in the harsh economy ofthe day, it can’t hurt forhomeowners to have a littlelandscape knowledge of theirown. In that case, should thepurse strings need to be tight-ened a little bit, homeownerswon’t watch their lawnswither under the harsh sum-mer heat.

One of the best tricks of thelandscaping trade is to utilizemulch around plants, treesand shrubs. Both aestheticallyappealing and beneficial to

Spring mulching serves both cosmetic, practical purposessoil, mulch helps to reduceweeds, conserve soil moistureand keep soil strong through-out the often trying tempera-tures of summer. Forhomeowners hoping to get themost out of their mulch thisseason, the following factorsshould be considered beforebeginning a mulching project.

• Appearance. Many home-owners want to make theirlawn as aesthetically appealingas possible. A good lookinglawn can increase propertyvalue and instill a sense of pridefor all who live at a home.

Mulch comes in a variety ofappearances. Color andtidiness are two sticking pointsfor many homeowners. Typi-cally, no one wants the mulchto be the talk of guests andneighbors, instead the plants, trees and shrubs the mulch

surrounds should garner thebulk of the attention. Dark-col-ored mulches tend to instill arelaxing feel to gardens, whilebrighter colored mulchesmight work better in vegetablegardens. Don’t be afraid toseek advice from the sales rep-resentatives where you’re buy-ing your mulch as to whichmulch goes best with eacharea. Mulch does not have tobe uniform throughout theproperty to provide maximumaesthetic appeal.

• Benefits to the soil. Argu-ably the biggest advantage tousing mulch is its positive im-pact on soil. However, accord-ing to the Union of ConcernedScientists, a nonprofit groupdedicated to working for ahealthy environment, differentmulches serve the soil in differ-ent ways. While all organicmulches fertilize the soil as theydecay, they do so at differentspeeds.

If improving the soil is a pri-ority when mulching, rapidlydecaying or nitrogen richmulch is most beneficial. Rap-idly decaying mulches includeshredded leaves and grass clip-pings and are typically recom-mended for annuals. Slowlydecaying mulches, such as barkor straw, are generally consid-ered most beneficial to treesand shrubs.

• Application. For somehomeowners, finding the timeto get outside and lay mulchcan prove very difficult. In suchcases, easy application is prob-ably paramount. At this point,it’s probably best to consult aprofessional as to which mulchis not only the easiest to apply, but also the easiest to maintain,as anyone who doesn’t have

much time to mulch probablydoesn’t have much time tomaintain it either.

• Protection. How wellmulch insulates is also an im-portant factor to consider. Forexample, during the summermonths mulch should work tokeep heat out, while it shoulddo the exact opposite in thewinter. Once the weather hastaken a turn for the warmer inthe spring, consider mulchinga summer garden with hay, wood shavings or even com-post. These mulches will insu-late the garden from summerheat. In the wintertime, pineneedles or straw are effective attrapping heat once the groundhas frozen. Other mulches, in-cluding bark and stone, are es-sentially the multi-taskers ofmulch, working to insulate inboth summer and winter.

Mulching around plants, treesand shrubs is a practice that paysboth cosmetic and practicaldividends.

It’s almost May and thesummer swimsuit season isright around the corner. Sohow do you ready yourself forbeing scantily clad at the shoreor around the pool — and fast? The good news is there is stilltime to slim down and firm upbefore you don the bikini. It isreasonable to lose about 8pounds in 4 to 6 weeks. A lossof 8 pounds can make a big dif-ference in how you look in aswimsuit and other summerclothing.

• Skip the sweets and pack-aged foods. Stick to fresh

Beach-ready bodyfruits; several small, lightmeals; and plenty of water.

• Get out there and sweat. You will need to exercise toshed the weight. Aim for 30 to60 minutes a day.

• Write down everythingthat you eat so you can seewhere you over-indulge.

• Avoid gas-producingfoods or eating/drinking in amanner that can trap air inyour digestive system. Thiswill only make you lookbloated.

• Skip salty foods that couldcause you to retain water.

It's not always easy or con-venient to follow nutritionguidelines for a healthy diet.Fortunately, there is an easy -and delicious - way to worksome good-for-you foods into abusy day: making a smoothie.

Fruit smoothies are great asbreakfasts, lunch alternativesand after school snacks. Theytake hardly any time at all tomake and can be enjoyed on thego.

Start with a healthy base -low fat or skim milk, low fatyogurt, fruit juice or silken tofu.Add in fruit and maybe a dashof extra flavoring. Blend it alltogether and you're ready tostart sipping.

Maribeth Abrams, nutritioneducator, chef and cookbookauthor, likes making smoothieswith organic silken tofu fromNasoya. "I love its versatility,"

she says. "It adds a lot of nutri-ents and body while effortlesslytaking on the flavor of the ingre-dients mixed with it."

Tofu also adds healthy pro-tein, which helps keep you en-ergized. And, according to theFDA, clinical studies haveshown that consumption of soycompared to other protein, suchas those from milk or meat, low-ers total and LDL cholesterol.

The tropical flavors of aTropical Green Tea Smoothiecapture the flavors of summerin a glass. This smoothie alsohas the added benefits of greentea. Green tea is light and re-freshing, and has the least caf-feine of all the teas and the high-est concentration of beneficialphytonutrients, special nutri-ents that may help fight cancerand other diseases.

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

(Family Features) With theeconomy floundering, manyAmericans are spending lessmoney and sticking closer tohome. That means more timefor home projects such as gar-dening and yard care. Oneproject that has become verypopular over the last few yearsis building an outdoor gardenroom.

An outdoor garden roomcan be a natural extension ofyour home. It can be as elabo-rate or simple as you like. Somepeople build a three-seasonporch complete with furniture, dining tables, and lighting at-tached to their house. Otherskeep it simple by just decorat-ing their existing deck or patiowith favorite plants and pot-tery. Some gardeners create aspecial room in the yard awayfrom the house and all its activ-ity. Whichever way you go,here are some basic ideas to cre-ate a beautiful and functionaloutdoor garden room to enjoy.

Design to Use. Think of howyou’d like to use your outdoorspace. Do you like entertainingand cooking for people? If so,you might want to incorporatean outdoor oven and sink in theroom. Also, if you’ll be servingfood in the outdoor room, buildthe room close to the kitchen toreduce the amount of tripsyou’ll have make. If the roomis mostly a quiet retreat or read-ing space, consider large plantsand structures that create hid-den resting areas with comfort-able outdoor furniture andgood lighting.

Designingan Outdoor

GardenRoom

Look at the Space. Considerthe location of your gardenroom. Look at the access points. How large are the paths and dothey enter the room from thedesired direction? How doesthe traffic flow in the room? Isit disruptive to the intendedpeace and quiet of the room?Consider the views. There’snothing worse than creating abeautiful outdoor garden roomcomplete with plants, furniture, and sculpture only to have anunflattering view of yourneighbor’s yard. To change theview consider planting ever-green hedges, such as cedarsand hemlock, or building a wallthat can be decorated with out-door art, hanging baskets, orwindow boxes.

Incorporate the Senses.Your room is a unique placewhere the outdoors meets theindoors. Incorporate some ofboth with plants and productsthat soothe the senses. These

would include fragrant pottedplants, such as brugmansia, stocks, and heliotrope. Plantcontainers filled with edibleplants, such as cherry tomatoes, herbs, and alpine strawberries, for snacking. Hang windchimes to offer natural sounds.Place beautiful ceramic contain-ers, sculpture, and art, on out-door walls for viewing. Build afire pit or fireplace for ambienceand warmth creating a cozy, romantic feel.

Make it Comfy. Outdoorfurniture has come a long way.No longer are plastic chairs andtables the norm. Rot-proofwooden and metal-framed fur-niture have all weather cush-ions that require little mainte-nance other than winter storagein cold areas. Use natural ma-terials underfoot, such as bam-boo mats and all-purpose rugs,to provide comfort for yourfeet.

Ultimately, the scope of your

Kathie Bond-Borie, Guest Columnist

Creating a garden room is a great way to enjoy the comforts of home.

(MS) - While it might havebeen a chore most would haveliked to avoid when they werekids or teenagers, for adultlawncare enthusiasts mowingthe lawn can be an enjoyabletime. Whether you’re a fan ofride-on lawn mowers or yougo with the more traditionalpush mower, an afternoonspent mowing the lawn can begood exercise and a way tocatch a few rays.

Of course, once the job isdone, what to do with thegrass clippings can present agenuine problem. Yard wasteis actually a valuable commod-ity, one that can helphomeowners save money ifused correctly.

How do clippingsbenefit a yard?

When returned to the yard, grass clippings can pay nu-merous dividends. First andforemost, grass clippings canhelp homeowners save money

Clippings are a lawn’s best friendon fertilizer. Clippings containvaluable levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and can help cut fertilizerneeds by up to 25 percent.

In addition, clippings workas a food source for bacteria inthe soil. One of the things bac-teria does is decompose harm-ful and unsightly thatch, im-proving the lawn’s health andincreasing its aesthetic appeal. How Much Should I Leave?

If you’re going to be return-ing clippings to your yard, you’ll need to make adjust-ments to your mower andyour mowing schedule. Whilesome homeowners would liketo set their blades as low aspossible to reduce the numberof times they’ll have to mowthe lawn, this is not healthy foryour yard. Mow grass tall witha sharp blade so that no morethan one inch of grass is re-moved each time the lawn iscut. If you set the blades toolow, clippings will pile up andthis will damage the yard. Also, cutting grass too lowdoes not encourage rootgrowth and promotes ineffi-cient use of water. When grassis cut at the correct height, roots grow more extensively, which helps make the yardmore resistant to drought.

During the season of rapidgrowth (typically spring), youmight need to mow twice perweek. While this might soundlike a chore, it won’t be as hardas it sounds. That’s because ifa lawn is mowed properly atthe correct height, the job gets

easier and doesn’t take muchtime at all. As the lawn beginsto grow less rapidly, you canreturn to the typical cuttingschedule.

How does a mulchingmower help?

Mulching mowers can be oftremendous assistance to any-one looking to get more out oftheir clippings. A mulchingmower works by cutting clip-pings into smaller pieces anddispersing them back into theyard as you’re cutting thelawn. Keeping the blades at acorrect height is essentialwhen using a mulchingmower. When its blades are setcorrectly, a mulching mowerwill distribute clippings moreevenly than a standardmower, essentially eliminatingthe risk of spreading too manyclippings onto any one spotand damaging the lawn as aresult.

Can clippings be usedelsewhere?

Clippings can be used asmulch and in a compost pile. When using clippings for ei-ther process, however, be sureto mix in other ingredients.Grass clippings, when they’renot spread out over a lawn butcollected in a pile, will producea very foul odor. However, when mixed with leaves orwood chips, the odor will dis-sipate. Also, by mixing withwood chips and leaves, you’rereducing the thickness of theclippings, which will allowmore oxygen to get into thesoil.

(ARA) - You’ve put yourwinter coat away, and the daysare getting longer. Welcome towarm weather! Unfortunately, that’s not all that is gettinglonger. Your lawn is callingand you need to be ready toanswer.

Spring is the start of thelawn care season, and with alittle work early in the yearyour lawn and garden equip-ment will be ready to performall season long. This guide willhelp you move into the yardwithout a hitch.

Safety First• Remove the power cord,

spark plug wire, or battery forcordless equipment prior toperforming any service. Alsogloves and eye protection arerequired to safely perform ser-vice.

• Next, check all of theunit’s fasteners, replace anythat are missing, and tightenloose fasteners to themanufacturer’s recommendedtightness. Loose and missingfasteners are a frequent causeof trips to the repair shop, andcan be dangerous.

Sharp Cutters are KeyEvaluate the condition of

any blades, cutting attach-ments or blower impellers. Ifin poor condition, these itemswill impair performance andcan cause injury.

• It’s probably best to leavemaintenance of these items toa professional unless you area very skillful mechanic andinstructions for removal, re-placement and sharpening arereadily available.

Warm weather equipment check-up guideElectric Equipment

• Electric equipment’s ex-ternal cords and wires shouldbe checked for fraying.

• Check all extension cordsused to power these products.Any frayed cords and wiresshould be repaired immedi-ately by a certified technician.Replace any bad extensioncords. Don’t risk using the unitor extension cord even once asdangerous shocks can result.

• Ensure that all switchesare intact and activate freely.Fully charge the battery, if ap-plicable.

Gas Powered Equipment• Perform the simple main-

tenance procedures from theowner’s manual.

• Check the oil before start-ing any small engine thatdoesn’t use gas/oil fuel mix.Place the product on levelground to avoid false read-ings. If the oil is low, fill it tothe recommended level withthe specified oil. Also, whilesome oil consumption is nor-mal for small engines, now isa good time to check for oilleaks that need to be addressedby a professional.

• Check the air filter; care-fully clean dirt, oil, and debrisoff the filter cover and the sur-rounding area before remov-ing the cover. Examine the fil-ter, and if it is dirty, replace orclean it per manufacturer’s in-structions.

• More experienced DIYersmight want to change the oiland filter and check the sparkplug. Make sure that your fuelis fresh as stale fuel can dam-

age your engine. Unless youused a fuel stabilizer, any fuelmore than 90 days old needsto be properly disposed of.

Cables and Levers• Check to make sure all of

these cables and levers oper-ate smoothly. If they don’t, lu-bricate or replace them.

Start Up• Connect the spark plug

wire and fire up engine-pow-ered equipment. Following theoperator’s manual instruc-tions, fill up the fuel tank withfresh fuel, making sure thereare no fuel leaks, and start theengine.

• If the engine doesn’t start,it is often because unstabilizedfuel was left in the unit dur-ing storage. This stale fueldoesn’t like to burn and leavesvarnish in your carburetor’ssmall passages and the fuelline. But all is not lost. If stalefuel and a dirty fuel system arethe causes of hard starting, trya fuel system revitalizer. Thesestarting fluids/system clean-ers can refresh stale fuel andclean muck out of your fuelsystem just by pouring theminto the unit’s fuel tank. It’s aneasy and economical way tofix a gunked-up engine.

• If the engine still will notstart after trying a fuel systemrevitalizer, it’s best to get a pro-fessional opinion.

Spring lawn care season isa great way to get active andenjoy the outdoors. It can berewarding and easy if yourtools are ready from the start. So what are you waiting for?Get going!

What continues to be one ofthe greenest modes of transportbesides walking? Riding a bi-cycle. Traditional bicycles re-main the greenest solution forpersonal mobility. Bicycles burnno fossil fuels, if constructedwell can last for years, requirelittle maintenance, and are easyfor anyone to operate.

Bicycles, which normallyhave a boost in sales during thewarm-weather season, are nowbeing purchased year-roundbecause of their eco-friendli-ness. And more people are buy-ing bikes.

This bicycle resurgence maynot be based entirely on theirgreen nature. It may also haveto do with the fact that bicyclespresent a healthier alternativemode of transportation.

Bicycles aren’t only good for

Bicycles are a green mode of transportationthe environment, they are goodfor the bike riders. It is esti-mated that the average 150pound person burns 410 calo-ries while pedaling 12 miles inan hour. The California Depart-ment of Health Services reportsthat behind tobacco, a leadingcause of death among adults isinactivity and sedentarylifestyles. Hopping on a bicyclecan help change that statistic.

Bicycles can be a very good, healthy way of getting aroundbut only if safety measures aretaken. Cyclists who ride sober, with the flow of traffic, wearinghelmets, and using lights atnight, are 99.999 percent morelikely to survive their rides, ac-cording to research by JohnsHopkins.

Many bicycle riders are notentirely familiar with the laws

of bike riding, which could putthem in danger. It pays to visityour department of motor ve-hicles or transportation depart-ment to get a copy of the lawsgoverning bicycles. A local po-lice department may be able tohelp you out with informationas well. Here are some generalrules that can keep you safe.

• always ride wearing a hel-met

• a headlight is encouragedto make you more visible in dimlight

• do not “ride” another per-son on your bicycle if it is asingle-rider bike

• ride only in the street, noton the sidewalk

• follow the same rules ofthe road that cars would obey, including signaling and stop-ping at traffic signals.

You certainly want yourlawn and garden to look beau-tiful, but far too oftenhomeowners succumb to mak-ing landscaping mistakes. Hereare some of the more commongaffes and how to remedy them.

1. Lawn ornament overkill:Putting too many lawn orna-ments into your yard can takeaway from the natural beauty ofthe landscape. If you want to

15 landscaping mistakes homeowners should avoidadd a whimsical touch, stickwith one or two.

2. Improper plant locations:The reason garden centers andnurseries put those care tags onplants is so that you will knowhow to care for the plant. Youshould take into considerationthe proper sunlight and expo-sure your plants will need.

3. Scalping the lawn: It is nottrue that cutting your lawn short

will mean less mowing. Thelawn has different requirementsthroughout the year. In coolerweather you can get away withcutting it shorter so that sunlightcan penetrate the soil. In thesummer, keep the blades longerto maximize water retentionand promote soil shade.

4. Picking the wrong plants:Many people pick plants be-cause they simply look goodand not because they’ll be ap-propriate for their yard.

5. Thinking animals won’tbother your landscape: Onceyou plant attractive and deli-cious flowering plants youcould find your yard is the newdining spot for a host of wild-life. Intersperse bitter-tastingflowers with the sweet ones todeter deer. Birds, rabbits, squir-rels and other animals mayneed barriers to keep them out.

6. Pruning willy-nilly: Manyplants prosper when pruned. However, over-pruning or do-ing so the wrong way or at thewrong time can harm a plant.Learn the correct way frombooks or a gardening center.Otherwise, don't prune at all.

7. Too much color: A smat-tering of color here and therecan be too much and distract-ing when your landscape isviewed. Instead, choose a colorpalette and stick with a fewsimilar hues.

8. Forgetting the family: Anornate garden certainly lookspretty, but how practical is it foryour way of life? If you havekids, you may have to thinkabout how your property isused and plan your landscapearound that.

9. Failing to be safe: Followthe recommendations andwarnings on any tools you usefor gardening. Always read theinstructions and user’s manual.

10. Grab and go: It’s easy towant to buy everything you seeat the garden center, but it’s bet-ter to go in with a plan and ashopping list. Mixing andmatching too many elements inyour yard could look sloppyand not well thought out.

11. Poor maintenance: Gar-den beds generally requireweeding and tending once ortwice a month. Make sure youhave the time to take care ofyour landscape after you createit. Otherwise, find someone re-liable whom you can hire to carefor it.

12. Failing to budget: Gar-dening, just like any hobby, cancost money. Make a list of whatyou’re willing to spend andstick to it. Otherwise the billscan quickly escalate.

13. One-season landscape:Your landscape should growand change with the weather.Plan for plantings that bloom oroffer color all year round.

14. Forgetting the day-to-night transition: Of course youwant your yard to look greatduring the day, but what aboutenjoying it at night? Make sureit is safe and plan for exteriorillumination so that you canhave many wonderful eveningsunder the stars.

15. No roadmap: You musthave a plan for your landscape.Plot it out on paper, make a listof your materials and costs, runthe idea by all those in thehousehold and only then begin.

(MS) — Few things exem-plify the easygoing nature ofspring and summer more than

Ready your ride for a warm weather road trippacking up the car and headingout on a road trip. Hitting theopen road with the top down, pulling up to the beach and en-joying a carefree day in the sunis a time-honored tradition formotorists across the countryonce the warmer weather ar-rives.

After all, who wants toworry about office workloadsand catching up with house-hold chores when there aremore important things like bar-becues to plan, and tan linesand travel plans to consider?

One thing all motorists needto think about before they putthe top down and tackle the

open road is how road-trip-ready their car is and how it’sgoing to look and performwhen it’s finally time to pushthe pedal to the metal. For theantsy motorist ready to leavework in the dust and hit thehighway, consider the follow-ing tips to make sure your ve-hicle can have as good a trip asyou do.

• Wash your car: When hit-ting the beach for a weekendgetaway, having a good-look-ing car is almost as importantas looking good yourself. Whilea trip to the tanning salon won’tdo your car any good, a thor-ough car wash will. Use two

mitts to wash your car: one towash the top and one for thegritty undercarriage so the bigbits don’t scratch the paint inmore visible areas. A quickwash removes not-so-friendlydeposits from busy little birds, water spots from recreationalareas, break dust that erodesthe wheel surface, and all kindsof debris that dims your car’sshine over time.

• Be prepared for anything:Perhaps the biggest problemwith flat tires is they alwaysseem to come at the worst pos-sible time. Before you duck outof the office early and start yourweekend getaway, be sureyou’re prepared for whateverpitfalls the road might present.Check the trunk and make sureyou still have a spare tire and ajack ready to roll should they beneeded.

• Get a tune-up: Nothingcan ruin a spring road trip morethan a broken-down vehicle. After a harsh or even a mildwinter, your car deserves atune-up, and you deserve a re-liable car when you hit the road.Make sure the battery hasplenty of juice, the tires areproperly inflated and thatthere’s fresh oil in the engine.
