Before beginning, sort fabrics 2, 3, and 4 in sets by matching letter (A, B, C and D). You will be making a ¼ block with the one cut of fabric 2-A, the two cuts of fabric 3-A, and the three cuts of fabric 4-A (along with cuts of fabrics 1 and 5 as directed). Follow steps 1-12 to make twelve ¼ blocks with fabric set A. Repeat to make twelve ¼ blocks with each of fabric sets B, C and D.You will combine one each of these four different ¼ blocks to make the final quilt block.

¼ Block A ¼ Block B ¼ Block C ¼ Block D

Piecing Directions

1. On the backs of 6 - 2½" squares of fabric #5, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Place a drawn square, right sides together on a 2½" square of fabric #1. Sew ¼" out from both sides of the line. Cut on the line. Open and press towards fabric #1. Square to 2". Repeat to make a total of 12 half-square triangles.

2. Sew two triangles cut from a 2 ⅜" square of fabric #5 to the unit from step 1, as shown. Press in the direction of the arrows. Repeat to make 12.

3. Sew a triangle cut from a 3 ⅞" square of fabric #3 to the piece from step 2. Press towards fabric #3. Square to 3½". Repeat to make 12.

4. Sew two triangles cut from a 2 ⅜" square of fabric #5 to the piece from step 3. Press towards fabric #5. Trim even with the triangles, as shown. Repeat to make 12.

5. Sew a triangle cut from a 5 ⅜" square of fabric #2. Press towards fabric #2. Square to 5". Repeat to make 12.

6. On the backs of the 3¼" squares of fabric #1, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Place the drawn square on the corner of the piece from step 5. Sew directly on the line and press towards fabric #1. Trim the bottom 2 layers to ¼". The block should measure 5" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make a total of 12.
