At least 51 homes have been destroyed since the volcanic emergency began. More than 2,000 people have fled the area. An historic expedition is scheduled for next Tuesday when long-distance swimmer Ben Lecomte begins a 5,500-mile swim across the Pacific Ocean starting in Japan and swimming to San Francisco. The journey is expected to take six to eight months, and is being tracked by Seeker, a digital media science company, and the Discovery Channel. Alberto, the first named subtropical storm of the 2018 season, has made landfall on the Florida panhandle, with heavy rain, gusty winds and flash flooding. MEET THE DISTINGUISHED YOUNG LADIES Maggie Montgomery is the 2019 Distinguished Young Woman of McMinn County. She was chosen from among 16 contestants last Saturday night at the annual program sponsored by The Opti- mist Club of Athens. Maggie is a senior at McMinn County High School and is the daughter of Lee and Ann Marie Montgom- ery. THREE CARS WRECK ON HIGHWAY 307 One person was injured in a three-vehicle wreck on Highway 307 at County Road 456 last Friday morning. The Athens And Englewood Rural Fire Departments responded.
