Ms Mulry has been busy perfecting her wheelbarrow race technique and identifying the trees in her local park using the Woodland Trust app. Ms O’Sullivan baked some apple cake and went for a walk in her local park where she saw some green parakeets and mallard ducks. Writing

Story starter: The trees, which stretched up far from the sandy shoreline, covered almost the entire small island. We sat there quietly, taking in the natural beauty that surrounded us. Finally, we had made it to paradise, our home for the next two months. At that moment, as a faint rainbow painted the sky with colour, I felt a sense of anticipation about our time on the island. ‘How will you cope without your phone?’, ‘What will you do for food?’, ‘Won’t you be scared?’ my family had asked. I didn’t have answers to their questions but as the sun began to break through the clouds, I knew that the months ahead would be full of challenges and excitement… What do you think the view looks like for the people sitting on the beach? Draw what you think they are looking at and write a sentence to go with your picture.

Phonics Today we are going to move on to Phase 4 phonics. Children will not learn new sounds within Phase 4. Instead, they will focus on their blending and segmenting skills, two-syllable words and learning some new tricky words. Please make sure that your child is confident with the Phase 3 sounds and tricky words before you begin.

Maths This week, we are learning to take away by counting back. Before we begin, try the activities below to see how much you remember. Can you count backwards from 10 without a number line? (10, 9, 8…) Can you recognise and identify all the numbers from 1 to 10? Use the number line below. Parents and carers, ask your child to point to specific numbers – e.g. show me number 6.

Does your child have an understanding of cardinality (how many a number represents - e.g. you could ask your child to find or show 5 fingers/objects)? Well done! Now, let’s get started with today’s lesson by learning a song (to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot). Show this image to your child:

Explain that the children in the picture are playing a board game and that in some games you can move backwards as well as forwards. Show your children their Snakes and Ladders game from their home learning pack and model how to play. Explain that rolling a dice tells you how many spaces to move forwards and that you can move up ladders and slide down snakes.

Get active and play a game of Snakes and Ladders to show what you have learned today. While playing, ask your child these questions: What number were you on at first? What number did you roll on the dice? What do you need to do now? How can you work out where you will land? How many jumps do you need to take? What number will you land on? Can you explain what happened using a first, then, now story?

Physical Development Play a game of catch or tag in your garden or house. Maybe you could be a scary monster using stamping feet or a tiny mouse walking on tip toes while you try to chase your sibling or parent. Perhaps you’re a scary lion on the hunt for his lunch or a kangaroo leaping high into the air. Maybe you are a crab and are trying to find your home on the beach or maybe you are chasing away the other crabs – can you do the crab walk?

Topic Work ( for the week) Creative Task 1 Make some salt dough dinosaur bones. You will need 250g flour, 125g salt and 125ml water. Mix the ingredients together, then place the dough on a floured surface and begin shaping it into dinosaur bones. Bake in the oven (at the lowest temperature) for about 3 hours or until your dough is solid.

Task 2 Make a dinosaur using recycled materials such as empty toliet/kitchen rolls, newspapers, cardboard boxes, egg cartons, etc. If you want to challenge yourself, you might like to make a paper mache dinosaur like the stegosaurus below. Here are some examples. Maybe you could have a look online for some inspiration too:

Task 3 Do you remember the 2D shapes that we learned about in maths – circle, square, rectangle, triangle? Use these flat 2D shapes to create a picture of a dinosaur.

Task 5 Make your own fossils using leftover salt dough from your dinosaur bones. What will you fossilise? When they are ready, bury them in your garden for a palaeontologist to find!

Task 4 Do you know what a fossil is? Fossils are the remains of animals or plants that have been left in the rocks for a very long time. Some people hunt for fossils! Fossil hunters are scientists called palaeontologists.
