Responsible business

As a large construction and regeneration group, we have a significant role to play in society by building new infrastructure, creating better workplaces and regenerating cities with much-needed housing and public spaces.

John Morgan, Chief Executive

Our quest to be the most sustainable business is enshrined in our vision and values and through our strategic sustainability objectives which we call our Total Commitments. These ensure sustainability is at the heart of what we do, on a project-by-project basis. Our focus is on being responsible for the environment, our people, interested parties and the communities where we work, in recognition of the huge impact we can have.

We strive not just to protect, but to leave a positive legacy for the communities where we work. Our success at doing this is demonstrated by our leadership position in the Considerate Constructors Scheme, where we have achieved the highest number of awards for the fifth consecutive year (66 awards in 2019).

In order to continually improve, we are open to challenge and regularly engage with interested parties, including our graduates, to improve performance across our business.

6 Morgan Sindall Infrastructure in association with QUEST

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and QUESTMorgan Sindall Infrastructure has supported the QUEST programme for 13 years. During this time, we have developed and enhanced our approach in line with feedback from 100 QUEST scholars.

We sponsor more QUEST scholars each year than any other organisation, and always receive positive feedback from our scholars on the experience they are given, and the commitment we make to mentoring them. We are the largest user of the QUEST programme with over 68 students currently sponsored. Approximately 43% of our current scholars are female, and we have the highest rates of retention across all QUEST sponsoring organisations. Our scholars enjoy their work with us and the responsible roles we give them and go on to progress quickly when they join us as graduates.

We’re proud to see our QUEST scheme described by the ICE as ‘Exemplary’ and to have been asked by the ICE to sit on the QUEST Committee to help promote and develop the QUEST scheme. We work hard to make sure our students, and ultimately Graduates, have a great experience and feel part of the Morgan Sindall Infrastructure family from their first term at university.

We use feedback from QUEST scholars to continually adapt our approach as well as working with the ICE to improve the scheme as a whole.

A team of experienced supervising civil engineers with detailed knowledge of the process of how to become a chartered engineer provide support for QUEST Scholars alongside the talent team and of course our QUEST alumni. We have a range of mentoring, buddying, social networking and learning support for QUEST scholars to complement university resources.

We expect our graduates and QUEST scholars to get involved in inspiring the next generation and all are enrolled as STEM ambassadors, where they are able to inspire more young people into engineering careers, working with schools and your own university to represent the ICE and our profession.

QUEST week

Our team is here to help you

A key stage of the process for the ICE QUEST Scholarship is the interview day, this year we’ll be having a virtual ‘QUEST week’. This part of the process is designed to enable you to get to know more about the sponsor companies and for us to get to know more about you.

Understandably, lots of people are nervous by the thought of interviews, with us, the interview is a friendly conversation, so don’t expect a grilling.

We plan to hold some virtual careers fair sessions as well as a company presentation and interviews. We hope you will have found out about our organisation so that we can answer your questions, but we won’t test you on our website’s contents! We want to talk about the things that have made you the person you are today. In 2020 we are looking for 10 new QUEST Scholars to join our business, so we have a lot of people to get to know over a few hours. Our people are the best way to get to know our business and whether it is right for you so we hope you’re able to make it to some of our additional sessions.

Your interview schedule may be daunting as you could be interviewed by up to five different sponsoring organisations

and the ICE. Each interview lasts for 25 minutes. The content of the interview will vary between organisations; some will ask you challenging mathematical questions or test your knowledge of engineering history but an interview with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is far less formal. With us you will be interviewed by two people who are either experienced professionals, mentors on our training scheme and senior engineers who regularly work closely with our QUEST Scholars and graduates.

If we have selected you for interview we want to get to know you better and understand how we can work well together. We will already have detected your enthusiasm for civil engineering as well as your ability to work in teams.

The ICE will have helped you to understand that employing organisations in civil engineering will generally fit into one of three broad categories. It is really important that you understand these categories and where each one fits.

You may be making one of your most important career decisions in the coming weeks, when you select the organisations you want to meet.

You will need to be clear in which category each QUEST sponsoring organisation fits. A customer could be a government body, such as Highways England, Network Rail or private developer. Working for a customer will usually be in a fixed office location.

A consulting civil engineer (or designer) designs assets for customers including structures, roads, railways etc. Typically working for a consultant may be heavily maths and design software biased and is largely office based.

Our Engineering Solutions division complements our infrastructure expertise

Customer, consultant or contractor Which are you?

operating as a consultancy. It is a small part of our business with some opportunities available.

With a contractor, such as Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, work is often site based and involves overseeing the design and managing construction to turn it into a finished project. You will always remember the things you build!

Construction sites may be a long way from home and can involve working outside in all weathers! The ability to think for yourself and be self-motivated is essential as you will have responsibility for sections of work and resources, working in great collaborative teams.

Contractors’ staff are given high levels of responsibility early in their career and have a diverse range of career paths ahead of them.

All civil engineers need strong communication, problem solving and team working skills.

Contractors

You’re about to make probably the second biggest career decision of your life – no pressure! We want you to make a well informed decision and one that is right for you. Decisions made now may set the direction for your early career - it can be hard to get back to a missed opportunity; so it’s vital that you research the companies you think you want to work for.

As well as being clear on the customers, consultant or contractor fit; there are some important other considerations to look out for:

Your early career path

Values: not just looking at them, desperately trying to memorise them or thinking ‘that’s nice’ and clicking away; we’re talking about really scrutinising how they match up to what you think is important in your life.

Locations: Any career in infrastructure is likely to involve travel at some stage, however, companies have different attitudes towards employees moving around projects or staying in one location. Think about what you’d prefer and take a look at the projects the company has worked on in the past, and what a typical graduate does in their first five years.

Financial position: It may sound boring but it ensures that businesses thrive and gives job security. Having a read of the abridged company accounts, noting the net cash position, order book or even comparing the share price over the last five years are good indicators of financial health. Business takeovers, failures and insolvency have been part of our industry in recent years and you need a stable business with a sound future.

Feedback: We live in a ‘review culture’ where feedback and reviews are all around and the world of work is no different. Check out company pages on The Job Crowd and Rate My Placement and talk to people who work for them.

What do our QUEST Scholars think?

George MyattGraduate Engineer - Rail Kings Cross Station

“The informal and friendly tone of the QUEST interview is very re-assuring, and this was reflected consistently in all the business units I had placements in. I am delighted to confirm that this has been carried forward into my graduate role also. The interview enabled me to learn more about Morgan Sindall Infrastructure as well as them getting to know me. Everyone I met has been there to help and assist me in my development. This has been shown through site and office visits and the three very successful and enjoyable summer placements.

My first two were at the at A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road and my last one was three months in the work winning team at Rugby head office. Without this experience it could have taken many years to develop my appreciation and understanding of the complete construction process.

I have now taken the skills I learnt over three placements into my first graduate engineer role at Kings Cross Re-modelling project which has enabled me to progress extremely quickly taking on more responsibilities every day. The support your managers and SCEs give you in regards to your professional development is also very encouraging and pushes you to progress.”

We are proud of the progress and achievements our QUEST Scholars make. During your summer placements, you’ll be able to experience the variety of the work we do. Our project managers know our QUEST Scholars and provide them with challenging and worthwhile roles.

“QUEST provided me with fundamental reassurance that I was embarking on the right career. With valuable work experience on live civil engineering projects I entered the industry with varied practical experience.”

Since joining us, Terri has gone on to win the European Women in Construction and Engineering Award for Best Young Engineer and also Most Distinguished winner in 2015. Terri was seconded to a design consultant’s office to gain important design experience before returning to the M5 Viaduct refurbishment project at Oldbury.

Katie BurnsGraduate Engineer - Rail Werrington Grade Separation Scheme

“Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has shown its commitment to the QUEST programme and all scholars by organising multiple orientation days at varied construction sites, offering placements based on preferences provided and ensuring feedback is collected from scholars to allow the experience to be improved.

The ‘people’ aspect of the business is clear from day one, the interview day. The interview is not seen as an opportunity to trip you up, they just want to get to know you and know if you have the qualities to work within the business.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of my placements and I gained varied experience through the opportunities to work within multiple teams and at various stages of construction projects.

Since graduating in 2018, I have worked within the Rail business unit on the Werrington Grade Separation as a graduate engineer. Upon joining the project, I was given a lot of responsibility due to my experience during university which at times was challenging but great for my development. I have been able to work on various enabling works of the project and on different construction stages from planning of works process and methods through to setting out on site and completing checks on completed works. As well as this, I am working towards gaining chartership with full support from Morgan Sindall Infrastructure through their commitment to my development and training.”

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is repairing the deteriorated concrete on this 1960s built M5 motorway viaduct whilst keeping the traffic running throughout. It takes a massive amount of scaffolding and encapsulation work under the carriageway to do this safely and effectively and allow the traffic to continue to run above it. It’s a complicated logistics project where we don’t know exactly what we will need to repair until we remove old road surfacing. Before we replace the surfacing we will upgrade the waterproofing system to protect the structure from the harmful effects of winter de-icing and the ravages of weather. We are also upgrading the viaduct’s lighting and surfacing to make it safer to use and reduce its impact on the community that lives around it. Our work for Highways England will ensure the viaduct remains operational for another 60 years. Key factsThe largest concrete repair project (by value) ever carried out in the UK. Runs through an area with over 320,000 residents and thousands.

“Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is a company full of friendly people wanting you to have fun through your chosen profession. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure always listens to you, what you want, your needs and your career goals; and will strive to facilitate them and make your dreams happen. When interviewing they are looking for a person that will fit into their company and holds the same values, they aren’t looking to trick you or catch you out - just be yourself.”

Alice is a site engineer working on the Werrington Grade Separation Scheme. She is currently involved in packages such as piling, reinforced concrete structures, slope stabilisation

and dewatering, to allow construction of a huge underpass structure that will be slid into position under the East Coast Mainline. She also leads the projects Considerate Constructors Panel, charity team, school visits and ICE group. Alice is enjoying working on a complex Network Rail scheme and looks forward to being involved in the next stages.

Alice began her journey with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure on the QUEST scheme back in 2013 where she completed summer placements on Crossrail at Whitechapel Station and Highways England schemes on the A14 Kettering bypass expansion and M1 J15-16 controlled motorway. Alice joined as a graduate engineer in October 2016 where she spent 18 months on the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road before moving to her current project. Throughout her time as a graduate she has also completed a secondment to the commercial team to aid her chartership progression.

Max RalphGraduate Engineer, Barking Riverside Extension “From rail to water to power to road and now back to rail again. I’ve worked on projects small and large ranging from £20 million to £200 million. On my QUEST placements I helped rejuvenate an old railway station, build a tunnel, and upgrade a 400kV electrical substation. I then graduated from university and started repairing a 1960s viaduct at the M5 Oldbury, and now I’m helping to create a new railway line at Barking Riverside Extension as a graduate engineer. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, and the QUEST scheme, have provided me with a holistic and varied experience of the civil engineering industry, allowed me the opportunities to develop and grow as an engineer, and taught me about things that I didn’t even know existed.

The invaluable work experience that I gained from my placements has allowed me to transition into the working environment with ease. I believe the scheme gave me a head start for my career, and put me on a good footing compared to some of my peers. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has friendly and welcoming staff that have helped to guide and shape my progression, and have been outstandingly supportive and understanding when I have needed them to be.”

Sam CarterSenior Engineer, HS2 Enabling Works“QUEST provided extra support, both academically and professionally, which allowed me to hit the ground running when I left university. I completed two summer placements and a further twelve months of experience during my degree course. The lessons I learnt developed me in ways that cannot be taught academically. In addition, my experiences on the QUEST scheme made it easier for me to relate my university study to the world of work.”

Sam is currently working as a senior engineer for High Speed 2 Enabling Works. Previously, he has managed sections of tunnelling work on Crossrail, and the construction of a storm sewer tunnel through the heart of a town in West Wales. He also worked at our in-house design company Morgan Sindall Engineering Solutions. Here he produced designs for Crossrail and Thames Tideway Tunnel projects, and developed a new type of sprayed concrete which is used to construct underground tunnels and shafts.

Delivered as part of the MVB joint venture, the tunnel will prevent more than 16 million tonnes of sewage mixed with rainwater overflowing into the river from the Victorian sewer network when it becomes overloaded.Key factsThe project includes five shafts, which are up to 75 metres deep.Britain’s largest water engineering project for 20 years.

Laura NagibQUEST Scholar 2016 “My last summer placement was on the Thames Tideway Tunnel project located in Putney. My work was incredibly varied and my first major task was to put together a materials schedule using different specifications which eventually surpassed one-thousand objects. From my degree I found that my design projects were very useful as I could finally understand how to read engineering drawings, but more importantly I could understand how elements I’d been designing in university were fabricated on site and put together. Something that was a highlight of the placement was putting together a slideshow presentation and presenting it to an MP who visited our site as well as talking her through our entire induction process. I was also very fortunate to work with an engineer who was driving introduction of more technology to the site. Together we worked on using an app called ‘alignment viewer’ that saved the project a significant amount of money.”
