Thin Film Materials DivisionTMD

Vacuum coating processes are used in a multitude of keyindustries where they are an indispensable constituent ofthe manufacturing process. The coatings, which are some-times only a few millionths of a millimeter thick, are deposited onto glass panes, electronic components, magnetic data storage media and plastic surfaces or are used in the production of solar cells.

One of the most significant industrial coating technologiesis the so-called sputtering process. This coating processenables a precise control of the coating thickness and isused when homogeneous and resistant coatings are required.During the sputtering process, atoms are removed from aprecursor material, called the sputtering target, by direct

bombardment with high energy ions. The material atomsare then deposited onto the substrate forming a functionallayer that has the desired properties.

The Business Units of the Thin Film Materials Divisioncorrespond to the industrial applications: Electronics,Large Area Coating, and Magnetic Data Storage. The Division is a leader in the development and manufactureof high purity coating materials and sputter targets. TheThin Film Materials Division is a globally competent partnerfor customer specific coating solutions thanks to its com-prehensive technological expertise, pronounced customerorientation, high rate of innovation, and a global networkof development centers, production and sales locations.

The Business Unit Electronics is a global leader in theproduction of sputter targets for coating electronic com -ponents and substrates for the display industry. Productionfacilities and bond shops are strategically located in Asia,Europe, and North America, providing local support to global customers. State-of-the-art production technologies, such as vacuum melting and powder metallurgy, are usedto produce high purity materials in customer-specific geometries, compositions, and purities.

The areas of application for sputter targets are just as varied as the products of the electronics industry – from

passive elements such as sensors and resistances via diodes and microchips to elements for optoelectronics. The booming market for the display industry poses specialrequirements for the dimensions of the sputter targets. The continually increasing display areas for televisions require the constant adjustment of the size of the sputtertargets while maintaining quality. Increasingly, rotatabletargets are being used which require special productiontechniques such as plasma spraying because of theirshape. Key technologies such as LCD, PDP, OLED, TouchPanel or Electronic Paper would be unthinkable withoutsputter targets.

Large Area Coating TMD-LAC

It has been a long time since window and architecturalglass only consisted of glass. Extremely thin coating systems give glass panes exceptional capabilities whilefulfilling architectural design requirements. They insulateagainst cold, protect from the sun’s rays and thus contrib -ute to energy saving in modern buildings. Reflective, antireflective or scratch resistant surfaces are just a fewexamples of the numerous application possibilities. Thesputtering process is also used in the production of solarcells, in particular thin film photovoltaic. Sputtering permits, among other things, the deposition of transparentconductive coatings as electrodes, or the production ofcoatings which reduce reflection and thus minimize losses

and increase the efficiency of the cells. The efficiency of a solar cell is therefore decisively influenced by the qualityof these coatings and is thus to a large extent dependenton the coating material used. Heraeus has been a leadingsupplier and development partner for the glass and photo-voltaic industries since the start of industrial use of largearea coating. Heraeus has continually extended its globalmarket leadership by the development of numerous inno-vative coating materials. The product portfolio includessputter targets of precious and non-precious metals, alloysand ceramics which are produced as planar or rotatabletargets up to a length of four meters.
