In Ashford, Connecticut, close to the Rhode Island border, there is a special place where even kids facing life’s hardest circumstances can be young and carefree. That place is Camp CONNRI.

Spring/Summer 2018

One reason we wear The Salvation Army uniform is to symbolize our constant desire to serve those in need.

(continued from cover) Each day at Camp CONNRI is full of

adventure. Kids can swim in the lake, do arts and crafts, climb the rock wall, and learn to care for live animals. They also attend a devotional service every morning.

Additionally, many of the children who are from low-income families come to Camp CONNRI for free and receive an official camp Bible upon arrival. But none of these activities would be possible without generous partners like you.

Campers leave their worries behind Jazzing up after-school programs

Shining a light in the dark

Many children dream about becoming famous musicians, singers, or ballerinas. But for some children, these dreams are out of reach due to financial challenges and availability of programs. In Bristol, Connecticut, all children have an opportunity to achieve these goals at Bristol Creative Arts and Music (CAM) Academy. Every Monday and Wednesday

afternoon, local youth get the opportunity to try their hand at different instruments, practice dance routines, and more.

Thanks to our generous donors, each session is free for children to attend. In addition to classes in dance, drama, singing, piano, guitar, brass, and timbrels, all kids receive a free, full-course meal during their session. CAM Academy is an excellent way for children to explore their talents in the arts. It also keeps them safely off the streets after school and gives them skills that may be of use later in life.

Every child who participates in the CAM Academy will have a chance to compete in The Salvation Army’s talent competition.

The suburbs of Hartford are notoriously nice places to live. But past the meticulously maintained houses, the city holds a different reality. One filled with poverty, addiction, and the gritty reality of human trafficking. A Glastonbury couple noticed this and made it their mission to help. By creating a $150,000 matching gift challenge for The Salvation Army to launch the Anti-Human Trafficking Bloom Initiative. “I think if more people open their eyes and realize that there are real people with real needs in our community, maybe more people will help. And that’s how things hopefully begin to change,” said Dave. You can participate in the match by noting it on your gift or by contacting: Dawn Fleming, CFRE Donor Relations Director, 860-702-0037, ctri.salvationarmy.org/SNE/CombatingTrafficking

Your donations to The Salvation Army help keep Camp CONNRI an amazing place for children in Southern New England to spend the summer. If you’re interested in sponsoring a camper or learning more about the camp, you can visit campconnri.org.

S’more love for campers and staff

“ You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” – Isaiah 43:4

If there is anything we want campers and staff to know before they leave camp, it is that they are loved.

“ All year I’ve been waiting to come back to camp. Three weeks before, I was already packed and waiting.”

– ANGELINA, returning camper

It’s such an amazing thing to be a part of Camp CONNRI. Every year we have campers tell us how much the summer at camp changes their lives. Some of the kids find their best friends, learn to swim, or discover a relationship with God. This is all made possible by generous partners like you. We can’t thank you enough for your support. We hope you know the spiritual and social impact you have on the lives of the young people who come to Camp CONNRI.

Gratefully,

Majors Jorge L. and Limaris Marzán
