As we head into the season of cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting and informative facts about winter. • For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the first day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about 9.5 hours of daylight. • A snowflake starts out as an ice crystal that freezes around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join together. There are always six sides, and although two snowflakes may be very similar, none are exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold weather produces very fine, powdery snowflakes, while temperatures near the freezing point cause much larger and more complex ones. The average snowflake falls at the rate of about 3.1 mph (5 km/ hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it to the ground. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve let yourself be distracted from what’s really important. But love finally gets your attention this week. However, it comes with a challenge that could create a problem.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to bully others into following your lead. Best advice: Persuade, don’t push, and you’ll get the cooperation you need to move forward with your plans.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist the urge to gloat now that you’ve proved your detractors wrong. Instead, charm them back into your circle. Remember: A former foe can become your best ally.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might want to claim all the credit for making this holiday season special. But is it worth producing a lot of hurt feelings by rejecting offers of help? Think about it.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Ignore a co-worker’s questionable behavior. Instead, put your energy into making your own project special. Then sit back and purr over your well-deserved applause.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not want to accept those suggested changes in your workplace. But don’t chuck them out before you check them out. You could be happily surprised.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your holiday planning might have to take a back seat for a bit so that you can handle a problem with a friend or family member. Your schedule resumes by the 8th.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships in general benefit during the early part of the week, including in the workplace. Also expect some overdue changes in a personal situation.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) “Prudence” should be your watchword this week. Best not to be too open about some of the things that are currently happening in your life.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Money is on your mind, so you’d best mind how you’re spending it. Take another look at that holiday budget and see where you can make adjustments.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resolving to revive an old friendship could open some old wounds. Are you sure you want to risk that? Think this through before making a commitment.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your need to know more about a new friend could lead to some startling revelations. Best advice: Keep an open mind about what you learn until all the facts are in.

◆ Don’t throw away that damaged garden hose. Here are three great ideas: 1) Use as a weatherstrip along the bottom of your garage door. 2) Use sections to protect the blades on your ice skates. 3) Use as a safety edge on your saws in the shop. Cut to fit, and slip it over the blade.

◆ “If a small screw keeps coming loose on something, remove it, paint it with clear nail polish and quickly rescrew it. This often does the trick. Makes it more grippy.” -- I.W. in Minnesota

◆ Doggie has a greasy coat, but it’s too cold for a bath? Liberally sprinkle your pup with baking soda or cornstarch. Rub into coat and brush out.

◆ “Those soft cardboard sleeves that light bulbs come in are really great for mailing photos. If you fold them flat, you can slip your pics inside, and it will go right into an envelope. They’ll be nice and protected.” -- D.L. in Georgia

◆ “If your curling broom is losing its spring, try trimming the bristles a little bit. This worked for me.” -- R.D. in Canada (Tipsters: Curling is an ice sport.)

◆ Defog your mirror with shaving cream. Smear it over the entire surface, and then wipe away with a clean towel. Keep cleaning until clear. It works for at least two weeks -- NO FOG!

C h a r l i z e T h e r o n and Robert Downy Jr. – 10 week old

DSH female and male. Someone thought that if we were named after famous actors that we would find a home really quick. We don’t care what our names are as long as we find our purrfect forever homes. We spend our days with a couple of dogs and another cat and get along just fine with everyone. Of course we think we are adorable and couldn’t imagine that anyone wouldn’t adore us! We are in foster care – please call 692-1517 to arrange a meeting.

Zeus – Y.Adult male DSH Po l y d a c t y l . The Greek God Zeus was king of the Gods, I am King of the Moose Jaw Humane

Society, for now. Once you adopt me I will be King of your home, my thrown will be your lap. I am a gorgeous grey guy who loves to love people.

Zora -Y . A d u l t f e m a l e Pyrenees

cross. My sister Omega and I arrived here quite scared and have spent some time up in the office getting to know the staff and learning to trust people. We have come along nicely, but are still a bit timid at first. A forever home with a kind, loving family is what we are looking for.

Misty - Adult spayed Lab/Corgi cross. Hey, Misty here. I am new to the shelter and have been

well loved by my previous owner. I received LOTS of treats and food. The staff here are trying to help me regain my girlish figure with daily exercise and a strict diet. No one here is exactly sure what my breed is, as I look an awful lot like a lab but I am quite petite (in height anyways). I am a wee bit timid when I first meet new people but warm up quite quickly. The volunteer dog walkers think I am pretty sweet!

Let the Cat Out of the BagMJ Humane Society needs the community’s help for funding through the Aviva Community Fund

As many in the community will already know, the Moose Jaw Humane Society has entered a funding proposal to win $10,000 through the Aviva Community Fund. This much needed money would go a long way to replace the aging and deteriorating cat cages that the shelter is currently using. The support was so strong in fact, that the MJ Humane Society received enough votes in Round One back in October to directly proceed to the Semi-Final voting round that begins December 3rd.

In the last year, the shelter has had to retire several old wooden cages that were no longer in usable (or fixable) condition, limiting the cat capacity even more so than usual. This is a very vital and crucial part of the shelter’s life, especially in times like this when the humane society is filled to the brim with cats.

In order for the Moose Jaw Humane Society to win this money, people need to vote for their funding proposal idea through the Aviva Community Fund’s website. It only takes about two minutes to register their email address or Facebook account, and each person can have one vote per day. The semi-final voting round begins on December 3rd and runs until December 12th. Judging will run from December 20 to January 28th and the winners will be announce January 29th!

The MJ Humane Society has added a new video to their proposal, and it features none other than the shelter’s resident flabby tabby mascot, Fat Boy, as he takes viewers on a little tour of some of the worst cages. To check out the new video, visit the website via this link and it will take you directly to it: http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf13351 You can also search under idea number ACF13351. (If you search directly for the Moose Jaw Humane Society, it’s harder to find.) In this day and age of the internet and social media, why not use your Facebook and Twitter accounts to help? The staff and animals encourage everyone to help spread the word, share their story, vote and vote often!

O m e g a - Y. Adult f e m a l e P y r e n e e s cross. My sister Zora

and I arrived here quite scared and have spent some time up in the office getting to know the staff and learning to trust people. We have come along nicely, but are still a bit timid at first. A forever home with a kind, loving family is what we are looking for.

Murphy – adult neutered DSH. Are you looking for someone to share your life with? I love my staff here at the

shelter and am always ready to keep them company and warm their laps at break time. They all admire my gorgeous green eyes and tell me how handsome I am. I agree of course, but do try to be modest. No one likes a conceited cat! My adoption fee is sponsored!

→ On Dec. 4, 1872, a British ship spots the Mary Celeste, a 100-foot American brig, sailing erratically but at full sail near the Azores Islands with not a soul on board. The last entry in the captain’s log was dated 11 days earlier, showing that the Mary Celeste had been drifting since then with no one at the wheel. The fate of the crew remains a mystery to this day.

→ On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing construction of a monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington.

→ On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the era of national prohibition of alcohol in America. Utah became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, achieving the requisite three-fourths majority of states’ approval.

→ On Dec. 3, 1947, Marlon Brando’s famous cry of “STELLA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Williams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

→ On Dec. 9, 1950, Harry Gold -- who had confessed to serving as a courier of top-secret information on the atomic bomb -- is sentenced to 30 years in jail for his crime. Gold implicated his brother-in-law and sister, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were later convicted and executed for espionage.

→ On Dec. 5, 1964, the first Medal of Honor awarded for action in Vietnam is presented to Army Special Forces Capt. Roger Donlon of New York for his heroic action at Nam Dong. Donlon was shot in the stomach during an attack by hordes of Viet Cong. He stuffed a handkerchief into the wound, cinched up his belt and kept fighting.

◆ It was revered civil-rights leader Mohandas Gandhi who made the following sage observation: “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err.”

◆ If you’re afraid of rats and mice, you might not want to read the following tidbit: Those who study such things say that 60 percent of all the mammals on earth are rodents.

◆ Athletes playing baseball on steroids have frequently been in the news in recent years, but drugs are nothing new in America’s national sport. During the late 1960s and throughout almost all of the ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, under the mistaken belief that it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in California.

◆ George W. Church, the founder of Church’s Fried Chicken, didn’t actually enter the restaurant business until after he retired. In his first career, Church ran a chicken hatchery and sold incubators.

◆ Historians say that Russia’s Peter the Great was nearly 7 feet tall.

Say You Saw It In... Create a safe home for your pets during the holidays(NC)—Decorating your home for the holidays is an exciting time of year for families, but small changes in the environment can be drastic for pets. From visiting family and holiday feasts, to decorations and gifts under the Christmas tree, the holidays present many exciting – and potentially dangerous – new situations for your little furry friends. PetSmart offers the following tips to help pet-parents prepare for changes in store:

• Deck the halls with tape and cord covers. Christmas decorations mean extra electrical cords, plugs and plenty of tempting new “chew toys”. Pet-parents should take the extra time during decorating to tape down or cover cords to help prevent shocks, burns or more serious injuries.

• Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... aren’t good for pets. We often think we’retreating our little ones with table scraps but this “treat” can be harmful since dogs and cats do not have the same digestive systems or nutritional needs as people. Chocolate contains the heart stimulant theobromine, which, even in small quantities, can be toxic to dogs and cats. Keep pet-friendly treats on-hand instead, so they munch safely while still enjoying the feasting fun.

• Hollyis not so jolly for pets… Some of our favourite seasonal décor is harmless for humans, but can be unsafe for animals. Mistletoe, holly berries and poinsettia plants are poisonous to pets, causing severe, upset stomachs. Consider using repellent sprays or a doggie gate to help keep thems away from harmful areas and objects.

More information on prepping pets and keeping them safe can be found in the PetSmart Pet Care Library at www.mypetsmart.com/petcare.

DECEMBER HISTORYThe first week of December has been a significant one over the years. Take a look at some of the events that have impacted history. • December 2, 1939 marked the opening day

of New York City’s La Guardia Airport. Prior to being converted to an airfield, the land was the site of the Gala Amusement Park, owned by the Steinway piano family. The airport’s first title was the Glenn H. Curtiss airport, named for an early aviation pioneer, and didn’t become La Guardia until 1953, when the name was changed to honor former New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia. The site is 680 acres and sits on the shores of Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay in Queens. It employs about 8,000 and serviced about 25 million travelers last year.

• Cape Town, outh Africa’s Groote Schuur Hospital was the site of a groundbreaking procedure on December 3, 1967. It was here that Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human heart transplant. Dr. Barnard had experimented for many years with animal heart transplants. The 45-year-old surgeon, assisted by his heart surgeon brother Marius and a team of 30 people, transplanted the heart of a 25-year-old woman into Louis Washkansky over a nine-hour period. Q: I am a big fan of “Sons of Anarchy,” and I was wondering who the pretty blonde is? She was on a couple of episodes and played Karen. I know I’ve seen her on something else prior to this. -- Geri R., via e-mailA: Tara Summers, who turns 33 in December, plays Dr. Karen Dunhill on FX’s rough-and-tumble, motorcycle-filled crime drama. Tara is a TV and film vet who’s been in lots of series and feature film, including “Alfie,” “Boston Legal,” “Dirt,” “Factory Girl,” “Damages” and “Ringer.”

You can see her this winter in the feature film “Hitchcock,” which stars Anthony Hopkins (as Alfred Hitchcock) and Helen Mirren (as his wife, Alma Reville), with Tara playing Rita Riggs.Tara told me what it was like working with the two legendary actors: “Helen Mirren ... it’s really like her movie. She’s extraordinary. It focuses on the love story between Hitchcock and his wife, and how she was the silent partner in the operation. His wife had a lot more to do with it than we will ever know. And Anthony Hopkins is one of my heroes, and he was so generous and so kind. He’s always in a good mood, and just so amazing to work with and to watch.”***Q: My friend told me that the CW is remaking “Sex and the City.” Is that true? If so, why? It was great as it was on HBO.

-- Penny W., SeattleA: The CW is not remaking the hit HBO series, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Rather, they bought the rights to the prequel, “The Carrie Diaries,” based on the book written by “Sex” author Candace Bushnell. “The Carrie Diaries” -- set in the 1980s -- chronicles Carrie Bradshaw’s (played by AnnaSophia Robb) coming-of-age as she navigates her senior year of high school and discovers the glittering lights of Manhattan, and lots of shoes. “The Carrie Diaries” premieres on the CW on Monday, Jan. 14, at 8/7c, followed by “90210,” which moves to 9/8c.***Q: I was a big fan of “The Cosby Show,” and I wondered whatever happened to the actor who played Rudy’s friend, Stanley, on the show. -- Justin W., via e-mailA: Merlin Santana, who went on to play

Ohagi on “Moesha” and Romeo on “The Steve Harvey Show,” died on 2002 at the age of 26. Tragically, he was falsely accused of attempted rape of 15-year-old Monique King, so her boyfriend, Brandon Bynes, shot Merlin six times, killing him. Brandon received three consecutive life sentences plus 70 years in prison, while Monique received eight years in juvenile custody. ***Q: When will “Cougar Town” be back? -- Jennifer T., TampaA: TBS has announced that “Cougar Town” will return for a 15-episode fourth season beginning Tuesday, Jan. 8. So raise a glass (of red wine, of course) to the return of your favorite cul-de-sac gang, as they begin a new era on a new network. I can’t wait!

MJ AQUA OTTERS RETURN FROM COMPETITION:

Five athletes from the Moose Jaw Synchronized Swim Team – the MJ Aqua Otters travelled to North Battleford this past weekend for the 2012 Marnie Eistetter Development Camp and Figures Meet. Yorkton, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Wynyard, Weyburn, Estevan, and of course Moose Jaw were the clubs in attendance.

The athletes ages 7 to 17 were buzzing with excitement waiting to meet Canada’s very own Elise Marcotte: a 2012 duet and Synchro team Olympian for Team Canada. The girls had their eyes fixed on Elise as she taught them segments from the actual Olympic routine.

On Saturday, the athletes were divided into groups and followed five different sessions throughout the day. The girls had their eyes fixed on Elise Marcotte as she taught them segments from the actual Olympic routine. Claudia Holzner, a originally from Calgary, now training in the National Excellence Centre with Team Canada, taught the girls how to walk onto the Bulk Head with poise and confidence. She also worked with body positions in the water as well as theatrical movements that are both essential for competitive routines. Julie Levasseur Head Coach of Wascana Rythmic Gymnastics taught the girls how to properly stretch for maximum capacity during Synchronized Swimming. The girls tried their hands at elevated sculling (suspended between two chairs), resistant bands and posture when working with Jennifer Langlois; an expert that specializes in Long Term Athlete Development and Sports Physiology. Brittany Leaper, a High Performance Coach from the North, focused on different land drill techniques that would help the girls remember their routine more effectively.

Sunday brought about The Marnie Eistetter Figures Meet the very first figures competition of the season. North Battleford was the first figures event that our girls had the opportunity to compete in. All of our athletes placed and received recognition for all their hard work on their figures. In the 10 and under recreational stream Raelin Nesvold placed second with 42.938 points and in the 11 and 12 recreational stream Sam McLaren placed second with 44.667 points and Kyla Damaskie placed third with 41.998 points. Congratulations go out to all of our girls for a job well done! A huge thank you goes out to our head coach Raina Morrison for all the fantastic volunteer time she puts into our club. Without her our girls would lack the skills that they need to compete in these events!!! Although tired from the action-packed weekend the athletes were happy and learned a lot of new skills that they can put into practice back here in Moose Jaw. Our coaches are proud of how well the girls did for their first event of the season.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT Part 4

Fibre helps you lose weightThe body needs nutrients to survive and perform daily activities. It gets its fuel from food. The food that you eat makes a difference on how the body performs. It is not about the amount of calories, but the content of nutrients in food that makes a difference in how the body performs and maintains good weight.

The body requires fibre for proper functioning. Fibre helps control weight, but most people only have 15 grams of fibre each day.

Here are some reasons of why the body needs fibre:• digestive health• proper functioning of the colon • to maintain good bacteria • lose weight Intake of fibre should be an average of 25-30 grams per day.

To help you understand the body’s requirements of fibre and how to increase fibre intake, note that most fruits, vegetables and whole grains have at least 2-4 grams of fibre per serving.

Whole grains such as brown rice and barley, vegetables like sweet potatoes, snow peas, and fruits like apples and pears with skin are a high source of fibre with 4-6 grams of it per serving. Cooked legumes, most nuts and seeds, berries, and dried fruit, are very high sources of fibre with more than 6 grams per serving.

Make sure you are having the appropriate intake of fiber if you are looking to lose weight. For more information on how start losing weight or how to increase your intake of good fibre, give me a call at 604-355-5433. You will have your free consultation if you are motivated to lose weight!

Homemade Guacamole a Post-Turkey TreatIt’s a rare day when I don’t have an avocado “in waiting” on my kitchen counter. And when it’s

just ripe, guacamole is bound to be on the dinner menu as an appetizer with tortilla chips or as a final crowning dollop on a quesadilla, taco or grilled fish. When Thanksgiving turkey, dressing and green bean casserole leftovers have run their course, add some zip to a meal with the yummy taste of guacamole. Who can resist the tempting combination of creamy avocado, fresh garlic, seasonings and zesty lime? And while you are at it, let your school-age kids pitch in to help with an easy step or two. As they squeeze the last wedge of lime, invite friends over for an impromptu get-together. It just might be the relaxing antidote everyone needs after a busy holiday week.

HOMEMADE GUACAMOLE2 ripe Haas avocados, peeled and pitted2 tablespoons lime or lemon juice1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped1/2 medium jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (see note below)1 garlic clove, minced

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste1/2 medium tomato, seeded and diced (optional)1 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro or parsley (optional)

1. Mash avocados in a mixing bowl with a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunks.2. Add lime juice, onion, jalapeno, garlic, salt and pepper. Stir well.

3. Fold in tomato and add cilantro or parsley, if you wish.4. Serve immediately or place plastic wrap directly on top of guacamole. Leave on the counter to enhance the flavors until ready to serve within an hour or two. Makes about 2 cups.

Tips:--Stretch the recipe by stirring in a half-cup of small-curd cottage cheese just before you spoon it into

a serving bowl. --For a quick dip, mash an avocado and add a tablespoon or two of your favorite salsa. Stir together and serve.Note: The juice of jalapeno peppers can be irritating. Wear plastic deli-style gloves when handling. Avoid hand contact with your eyes.

DECEMBER HISTORY (continued):

heart, but rather from pneumonia brought on by reduced immunity. The recipient of a heart in Barnard’s second transplant, just one month later, survived for 19 months.

• The world’s first Burger King opened in Miami, Florida on December 4, 1954. However, the “King” wasn’t their trademark figure until the following year, and the Whopper sandwich wasn’t introduced until 1957. Today, more than 11 million people dine at the 12,400 Burger Kings located in 73 countries around the world.

• December 5 is International Ninja Day, a time set aside to celebrate martial arts skills. This is just the tenth year it has been recognized, as the holiday was created in 2003 in conjunction with the December 5th opening date of Tom Cruise’s film The Last Samurai, which featured a battle scene between samurai and ninja. Those observing the holiday are encouraged to dress like ninjas.

• Europeans and Scandinavians celebrate St. Nicholas Day on December 6, and in many countries, it is the primary occasion for gift-giving during the holiday season. It commemorates the feast day of this 4th-century Greek Bishop of Myra who had a reputation of giving gifts in secret, tucking sweets and coins in shoes and boots left on the front doorstep. The Bishop was the inspiration for the North Americans’ Santa Claus and the British Father Christmas.
