Surf Experience Days (MOF) were created to get kids who have cystic fibrosis out into the ocean water (which is high in saline) and experience what natural therapies can do for their lungs. The exercise
and fun they get from these events is truly fantastic. What is even more amazing, kids who have cystic fibrosis re-spond very well to the salt wa-ter environment. The saline in the air and water breaks down the congestion that is in their lungs. This congestion is what causes them to go to hospi-tals constantly and leads them to have to take lots of medica-tion on daily basis. With salt water treatments, their hospi-tal visits are cut down in half,
leading to a healthier and more fulfilling life with fun activities.
The Mauli Ola Foundation (MOF) was organized to promote education, awareness of ge-netic diseases and to increase research for genetic disorders. The MOF raises funds to support programs for kids and adults with life-threatening illnesses and disabili-
ties through social events such as music concerts, sports tournaments, galas, and other great events. We want to provide a di-rect and immediate option for children with genetic disorders an enjoyable and healthy way of life through natural treatments.

This is not one of those blow-smoke-up-your-butt recaps where we exaggerate the conditions and the action to make things sound exciting. The surf came up today in a big way for the conclusion of the Fosters Belmar Pro. Sure the wind was onshore, but it blew up some three to five-foot peaks with some bigger sets for the last day – one that will go in the history books of New Jersey surfing.Who would have ever thought that a kid from Ocean City, Maryland would win this thing? Vince Boulanger beat one of the East Coast’s top pros in Asher Nolan, rising junior star, Evan Thompson and last year’s champ, Michael Dunphy to take the trophy.Parker Coffin won the Fins Pro Junior on the same day older brother, Conner got a wildcard into the first round of the Hurley Pro at Trestles. One of the highlights of the day was superstar local Jessica Kwiecinski taking out a stacked heat in the Hannah Womens Pro. It’s possible that no one’s going to stop talking about her 7.5 for years to come. And no surprise in the Monster Energy Longboard Pro, as Tony Silvagni cross-stepped his way to a win with a wave that he got a sick pit, noseride and tried an air. Unreal day all around. We’ll have full results coming up. For now, everyone in Belmar is either half in the bag or half in the bed. Thanks to everyone for a great weekend. Photos: Max Korn

Avalon, was making only his second appearance in the Grudge Match and his first in a Grudge final. He was eliminated in the semis last year."I just kind of went into that heat thinking about having winning, I wasn't too worried about winning," Ciaramella said. The young surfer impressed many in attendance, punctuating
When it comes to New Jersey surfing, it's Sam Hammer's world. Everyone else is just living in it.At 31, Hammer solidified his reputation as New Jersey's preeminent surfer winning his fourth championship belt at the Smith Optics Garden State Grudge Match."We were making a joke on the beach. We might have to tell him he can't surf for a few years and let a couple of other guys win this thing," Rob Cloupe, the contest organizer, said."It's the most fun event ever," said Hammer, a Point Beach High School graduate and Lavallette resident. "It feels great. It's an honor.""This is really his event, he's won it four times now and he's been in the finals three other times," Cloupe added. "It's really his title to lose."In its nine years, the Grudge Match has become the most prestigious surfing contest in New Jersey. The 32 best surfers in state are hand-selected to battle it out each year for $3,500 in cash and a year's worth of bragging rights."This is kind of a grassroots event," Cloupe said. The annual event is held each October at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights. Rather than having a set date, the event is an on-call contest, where organizers wait for ideal surf conditions before calling the competition.Hammer's road to the belt included some of the day's best rides including two perfect scores— the first in the event's history. In his semi-final heat against his friend and former Grudge champion Mike Gleason of Long Branch, Hammer disappeared deep into a large, churning barrel and was able to reemerge miraculously, drawing a combination of gasps and cheers from stunned onlookers."The first 10-pointer was one of the best I've ever gotten [in the Grudge Match]," Hammer said. "It just stayed open."In the final, competing against Mike Ciaramella, Hammer found his way into a tube again, clearing the section before cutting two massive off-the-top turns.Despite having victory of the younger surfer firmly in hand, Hammer continued to push the pace, nearly getting washed into the pier pilings when he attempted to take off deep and late on a large set wave.Ciaramella, an 18-year-old from

his contest performance with fast, fluid wave riding.A testament to the wide broad spectrum of surfers the Grudge Match sees, Ciaramella surfed against Long Branch's Keith Noonan, who is more than twice his age, in the semi-finals.The 40-year-old tore through many younger surfers on his way to the semi-final showdown
including defending Grudge Match champ Zach Humphreys of Margate.Hammer's taking of the title is the latest chapter in a storied rivalry between surfers from New Jersey's northern beaches and its southern beaches."It's kind of the underground rivalry," Cloupe said. "I don't think that will ever go away.""It's friendly, but there's always a little bit of jawing going back and fourth," he said.Shortly after the win, Hammer was congratulated by Humphreys."It's back in North Jersey," Hammer said.

The 2011 WRV Outer Banks Pro
presented by Hurley took place last
weekend at Jennette’s Pier in Nags
Head, NC. The new 25 million dollar
pier was christened with its first ever
pro contest, and to top it off, mother
nature provided some fun chest-high
plus surf. 100 contestants battled it
out for 3 days through the sun, wind
and rain; but hey, surfers will take
what you give them – especially when
$10,000 is on the line. Michael Dunphy, last year’s finalist, found himself in familiar ground
once again, but couldn’t take down the 2009 champ, Ben Bourgeois, who surfed great all
event and walked away with 10 grand in his pocket. Not a bad payday! -- Noah Snyder

Piere Pressure at
the 44th Annual
Easterns Surf
Championship
By Phil LeRoy
Amid coastal devastation to North Carolina
churned by Hurricane Irene which left many
thinking “postponement”, and the subsequent
move from the traditional location of Cape
Hatteras to Nags Head at Jennette’s Pier, the
44th annual ESA Championships would run as
scheduled to let the best of the east battle for all
the marbles; or medals for that matter.
The first nor’easter of the season produced
macking double overhead waves with
dangerously disorganized conditions and in turns
pushed the contest one day back to Monday. It
was those same conditions accompanied with a
vicious rip that pushed a few surfers in between
the concrete pillars of Jennette's Pier that
successively led officials to call off the
competition for the rest of Monday to ensure the
surfers safety. As wave size decreased throughout the week,
competitive juices increased as the finals neared.
From well established surfers like Slater Powell
who took the masters final (25-34) and scored a
couple heavy barrels and a pier shot to boot, to
ESA Allstar Ana Barend (30 & over) easily cruising
to first place with an overall wave score of nothing
fewer than 9.0, and ESA Allstar coach and New
Jersey native Pat Emery taking the Senior Men
Final (35-44), there was no shortage of finals flare. However, one of the most thrilling parts of this

year’s Easterns was watching
the bright future of many groms
and up-and-comers come to
fruition. Luke Gordon, Mid-Atlantic
mini-monster out of Northern
South Carolina, secured his third
consecutive ESA Championships
win in the Menehunes division (11 &
Under). Allstar team captain Daniel
Glenn finished first in the Boys Final
(12-14) and actually had to clear the
water before heats end to switch
jerseys and sprint to the south side
of Jennette's Pier for his heat at the
Hurley OBX Pro that was running at
the same time.
16-year-old Corey Howell claimed the
Open Shortboard Final (All Ages, M/F)
moves,” Howell said. His drive, competitive edge and experience with the ESA and the Allstar coaches clearly paid off.
Nikki Viesins, who took second at the Belmar Pro a couple days before Easterns, ran away with the Junior Women Final (15-17). “I think for me, not winning first place definitely fired me up for this event,” Viesins said. “Hoping for something and doing it are two different things.” With Viesins goal of making the tour by age 18, her mindset is to compete in as many Women's Jr. Pro events as she can and focus on training hard and preparing for the 2012 ISA Jr. World Surfing Games in Panama.
All of these up-and-coming athletes haven’t risen to their successful
with his aggressive,
progressive and strong style of
surfing that seems to be dominating
the ASP as of late. It’s no wonder
considering both Daniel Glenn
and Corey Howell are joining the
ASP Juniors. For Corey, who
never won an ESA East coast
title before, it was important to
win the event's main division
and “go out with a bang and
show everyone (he) can do it.”
“Basically, my mindset when
I first got into the water was
to get two solid waves right
at the beginning of the heat
to get my momentum rolling.
After that I just kept trying
to better my previous waves
and try more progressive
level of surfing without losing. One reoccurring theme for them has been turning losing heats into a positive experience, and at this year’s Easterns their determination and passion for the sport came to fruition. With the tight-knit, competitive soup that is the ESA, there will be no ceiling to the talent the East Coast will continue to see at Easterns year-by-year. Remember, the ESA circuits have seen competitors such as Kelly Slater, Lisa Anderson, C.J. Hobgood, Shea & Cory Lopez, Ben Bourgeois, Dean Randazzo and more, so don’t be surprised when many of the names from this year’s Easterns you’re hearing so much of don’t disappear.

The Perfect WaveBy: Kyle Tester (3rd Grade)
"CRASH went the waves as my Dad and I put on our surf leashes. "I am so excited", my Dad said. "Mom will you video us getting the perfect wave", I
asked? My Dad and I ran down to Ho-nolulu Bay and jumped into the water. We began to paddle out into the bay.
My Dad and I ducked a big wave. Next, we were out where we needed to be on our boards. Then I saw it, the perfect wave! It was sparkling in the distance
and I turned around and started to paddle toward the shore to be in the right spot. I stood up and rode the
wave in. I did a cut back on the wave before it hit the rocks. Then I started to paddle back out. My Dad caught
a wave and said, "Come on let's keep surfing!" "I saw that wave you caught", said my Dad. I went back out and got where we were before. I said to myself
one more wave, let's make it a good one! Then I caught a wave right before the sea monster grabbed my foot. I stood up and started to come to shore. The
monster was coming after me, everyone was yelling to me to go faster. The monster grabbed my foot and ripped me off of my board. I was scared so I
popped up and hopped on my surfboard and paddled for another wave. I rode
the wave in and went as fast as I could to the car! I hope I never see the sea
monster again!!"

11th Annual Surf for a Cause and Beach Fest Huge Success!!
The 11th Annual SFAC was a great day with sunny skies, four to five foot waves and over 400 spectators that came out to share in the event. This year was a huge success and with your help and support we raised over $24,000. All of the contributions will go directly to assist individuals battling cancer both financially and emotionally. With your support we have been able to donate over $195,000 in the fight against cancer. We wanted to give special thanks to all the surfers, participants, judges, volunteers, sponsors, Lou and Barbara of the Greenhouse, Tom O’Brian for donating the trophies,Margate Public Works Department, City of Margate, DRCF board members, and everyone who came out to support the 11th Annual Surf for a Cause! Thanks so much, we couldn’t do it without you!

(Atlantic City, NJ, October 2011) – Surfing America’s PRIME Series (ASP) competition will stage its inaugural Atlantic City event on October 15 and 16, 2011, hosted and produced by the AC Surf School/AC Surf Club, LLC. This world class event, featuring some of the East Coast’s top surfers, takes place on the south side of Caesars from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. More than 300 competitors are expected to participate. It will be broadcast in part on Fuel TV and webcast at www.surfingamerica.org.
The Surfing America Prime series was developed as a training series for 18-year-old and under surfers to prepare for national and international competition and is a qualifier for the Surfing America USA Championships and the PAC SUN/Surfing America USA Team, which competes internationally. This is the first of only three such qualifying events to be held on the East Coast.

The Atlantic City ASF and Surfing America Prime Series event is sponsored by Under Armour, Got Milk, Caesars Entertainment, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and the City of Atlantic City.
According to Tom Forkin, founder of the AC Surf School/AC Surf Club LLC, “This is a tremendous opportunity for local surfers to compete against some of the best surfers on the planet. There is no other surf destination that enjoys billion dollar casinos on the beach with good surf, and it’s gratifying that the mayor, city council and CRDA have embraced the sport.”
