Nobels and Ladies,

It has been a stressful time for all of us this past couple of months. Your Divan hopes all are doing well and staying healthy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families that have been directly affected by COVID-19.

We are all getting anxious to get out and fi nd some resemblance of normalcy. The Board of Directors continues to monitor the current events closely. All of us watch the news with antic-ipation and uncertainty. There are many options and differences in opinion of what is safe. We will remain diligent and conservative in our decisions to keep membership safe.

As you should be aware by now, the Imperial session in Kansas City is canceled. We should be getting information over the next few weeks as to how required voting will transpire. We are still waiting for the decision for CSSA in Springfi eld. We are promised a defi nite answer in the fi rst week of June. We are antic-ipating a June stated meeting should the county allow. We will follow strict guidelines for safety. This meeting may be restricted to conduct immediate business only.

Nobles, as you are aware, we are forced to cancel meetings and events like the spring ceremonial. I am working with clubs to see if we can get some abbreviated version of a ceremonial. I know it has not easy to socialize and talk to prospective members, as well as a Grand Lodge has put a hold on degree work. Membership is key to our success; please make an extra effort to fi nd good men so we can move quickly to make them new Shiners as soon as possible.

Get excited about the restructured Sportsman’s raffl e. This year’s raffl e will not be like the ones in the past. Under the circum-stances, I believe Ill. Sir Dean Isbell put an excellent package together. Remember this not only benefi ts Moolah but benefi ts each of your units and clubs as well.

I am very proud of the many groups that have made the best of a diffi cult situation by having virtual meetings, happy hours, and other social gatherings. I participated in some of these events, and everyone who attended seemed to have a good time. Good work to all of you for keeping everyone connected. We are an organization that thrives through social gatherings and fellowship; these events help keep everyone engaged.

I asked each unit to reach out to all of their members to check-in and see if anyone needs assistance. I am happy to say there were no reports of anyone needing assistance. If you fi nd yourself needing assistance, please let us know through the offi ce. We have many members who can get out and help all the while using safe guidelines.

This month’s Camels’ Tales will be our last printed version. Most members can access the newsletter via email and the web. If you do not have access to email or the internet, please let the offi ce know, and a printed version will be mailed to you. Many other temples are communicating in this fashion, and the Moolah Board of Directors has agreed to move forward in this direc-tion to help reduce expenses. Please contact the offi ce if you require a printed version.

Please stay tuned, monitor your email, and the Tuesday weekly newsletter. I am hoping that the early phases of reopening will be forthcoming in the next weeks to come.

Stay safe and stay healthy.

Fraternally,

Ill. Sir Russell Georgen

God never closes his storehouse until you close your mouth and stop asking.

God wants to help you, but if you don’t ever ask, that’s a problem. The last time you needed a car, did you ask God for it, or did you just go out and buy it? Before you decided on the best way to do something, did you ask God for wisdom? When you needed help in a relationship, did you pray about it fi rst?

The Bible says says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will fi nd; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

When you need God’s help, remember to ASK: ask, seek, knock. God spells it out in this verse three ways so that you will get the message. Maybe you never see miracles in your life because you never ask for them. If you want to see God work in your life more, start asking!

One of God’s principles for your fi nances is that before you pay for it, pray for it. Stop and ask God. Give God a chance to give it to you before you go out and charge it. If you depend more on your credit card than on God, then you’re not going to get God’s blessing on your fi nanc-es. He wants you to pray about it before you pay for it so that you will have his wisdom and make a decision that pleases him.God wants you to ask for things in prayer because he’s a loving Father. Like any father who loves to give his kids good things, God loves to bestow gifts on his children. He’s just waiting for you to ask.“You have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy will be the fullest possible joy” (John 16:24).

God wants you to ask so he can give. He wants to give so you can receive. He wants you to receive so you’ll be full of joy. He wants you to be full of joy because it’s a great advertise-ment for His Word. Joyful followers show the world that doing what he commands brings joy, not dread.

Stop worrying about your fi nances. Start praying about them! When you do, you’ll have a lot less worry and a lot more joy.

Joe Shivley - Circus Chairman 573-778-6117Ron Reynolds - Circus Director 314-732-2121

Unfortunately, the Circus had to be rescheduled until October 15 to 18, 2020.

Thank you to everyone for their patience and hard work to help make this change possible.

We hope everyone helps get the word out about the new date, and will work just as hard to support the circus in October.

It takes many people to put together an event this big. A very great Circus Committee. Great volunteers. Great sponsors to support our cause. And of course people to come out to enjoy the circus.

Thank you to everyone who works so hard to make Moolah Shrine Circus the best ever.

The Imperial Session has been canceled.Dear Nobles,

Based on data and opinions of public health experts and community offi cials, Shriners International has cancelled its 2020 Imperial Session, scheduled for July 2020, in Kansas City. In determining whether the 2020 Imperial Session could be responsibly held, the perspective of Shriners International was to take a global vision with local focus. The Imperial Session is truly an annual international gathering at one physi-cal location. The Imperial Divan, the 2020 Convention Corporation, and the staff of Shriners International closely monitored developments and worked closely with the Kansas City Health Department in planning the 2020 Imperial Session. This planning was always undertaken with the

hope and expectation that the convention would proceed, as long as it was reasonably safe to do so, based upon the trajectory of the Coronavirus and governmental quarantine and/or stay at home orders, actions based upon data and opinions provided by public health professionals.

Based on the information provided by public health professionals and recent governmental extension of existing public health orders, Shriners International determined that the safety of attendees and the safety of the community could not reasonably be provided on or before the start of the 2020 Imperial Session in Kansas City and therefore cancelled the 2020 convention, due to the impossibility of safely hosting it.

Imperial Sir and First Lady, Jeff and Cheryl Sowder, are extremely sorry that they will not be able to per-sonally welcome Shriners from all over the world to celebrate fun and fellowship in Kansas City. They have dreamed and planned for more than a decade to have Shriners join them for an incredible experience in Kansas City. While the worldwide pandemic prevents us from meeting in Kansas City and renewing our acquaintances, it does not prevent us from renewing our commitment to the important work of the Shrine.

Additional information related to governance issues for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children, in the absence of the respective annual meetings of each corporation, will be provided in the near future.

In spite of our disappointment, Shriners are encouraged to stay safe, stay strong, and stay involved with everything we can do now in preparation for doing more in the future.

Yours in the faith,

Jeffrey L. SowderImperial Potentate

Do you know where the fi rst Shriners Hospitals for Children was built?

By June 1922 the cornerstone had been laid for the fi rst Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Shreveport, La. The fi rst pa-tient to be admitted in 1922 was a little girl with a clubfoot, who had learned to walk on the top of her foot rather than the sole.

Through the remarkable foresight, commitment and fundrais-ing skills of the Shriners nearly one million children have been treated at one of the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children across the United States, and in Canada and Mexico.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofi t organization, Shriners Hospitals for Children relies on the generous donations of Shriners, corporations and the general public to carry out our mission and improve the lives of children every day. Learn more about Shriners Hospitals for Children.

May: Represents the start of Spring and nature is in full bloom.June: What would it be like to live in a world where it was always June?It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolish-ness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredibility, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness.

Does this passage sound familiar? For those of us who remember our British English course in high school, it was the beginning of Charles Dickens’ “The Tale of Two Cities”. His words resonate today just like ages ago. We can certainly appre-ciate his message today. None of us has lived through something like the Coronavirus, and hope never to do so again.

The Virus has affected us as much or more than the Pandemic 1918-1919. Who could have envisioned that one hundred years later we would have our Pandemic. It is estimated that 500 million people or one third of the world’s popula-tion became infected with the H1N1 virus. Some estimate that 50 million died and over 600,000 in the United States. There was no vaccine and no antibiotics to treat secondary infections. People were given the same rules to live by that we have been given now with Coronavirus. There are many similarities between 1918-1919 and 2020.

As of early May, 4 million people worldwide have been infected and 270,000 have died. The US has 4.3% of the world’s population, but 30% of the deaths. We are feeling the nastiness of this virus. Times are stressful. Many household items are still in short supply. Behaviors have changed. We wash our hands more often and step away from people when in public. We watch TV to see how the numbers are increasing or hopefully going down. We have seen the economy tumble with many people out of work, businesses, restaurants, retail shops have been closed. Sports and family events have been postponed or cancelled all together. We admire our health care workers for all they are doing in spite of the additional risks to their health. The Virus has shown us just how vulnerable we are and how much we depend on each other.

The Virus has drastically disrupted our lives in unimagineable ways. It has for Moolah. For the fi rst time in our Circus history we have had to cancel and rescheduled it for October. The offi ce is presently closed and there are no events at the

Temple. It’s uncertain when normalcy will return, so look at Moolah website for further information. Hopefully, we can have our Stated Meetings, Sportsman’s Extravanga and attend our Units’ and Club events.

There is hope. St. Louis is being gradually reopened. People have returned to work, more cars on the road and people are going out but hopefully taking precautions. Remember to follow Government and Medical Expert guidelines: Wash your hands often, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Be patient, be proactive and be kind to others. As Dickens said: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. But time will pass and we will once again be able to carry out our daily lives, enjoy our friendships at Moolah Temple, and fulfi ll our mission to HELP OUR CHILDREN. With faith in God and the indomitable human spirit, we will survive and be stronger and wiser.

Be Safe! Be Careful! Be Healthy!Once and Ambassador, Always an Ambassador!

The fi rst ever Offi cer Presentation for the BBQ Smokin’ Nobles scheduled for April 1 had to be cancelled due to the quarantine. The Smokin' No-bles were able to BBQ for the Mooseburger Camp on February 29 before the COVID-19 virus caused the shutdown of the Shrine. We, unfortunately, will not be able to honor our veterans at Jefferson Barracks with a BBQ this year for Memorial Day as we have in past years due to the virus quarantine. The Smokin' Nobles do plan on preparing and serving pork steaks, chicken breasts, cole slaw, potato salad, drinks, and individually wrapped desserts to veterans and hospital staff at Jefferson Barracks for Veterans Day. We will also hopefully still be able to participate in the Buick Collectors Club Car Show in Chesterfi eld on Saturday, September 12th, 2020. The Smokin' Nobles will cook, serve, and sell burgers, hot dogs, chicken-on-a-stick, chips, drinks, and desserts. A second

15th-18th. Pease get all your tickets and monies turned into the offi ce. Call in advance to make sure they are open.

Membership is a key factor to the Patrol’s success. Nobles, take a look at our unit! Great Activities, Af-fordable, Fun, and The best Dressed Unit at Moolah.

NOTE: If you are no longer marching, PLEASE TURN IN YOUR UNIFORMS. We are fortunate to be growing. We have room for 12 more marchers. More Nobles are polishing their boots with the Arab Patrol.

major planned BBQ fundraiser for 2020 will be the Wing Cook-Off Competition, won last time by the Clown Unit. Fresh Tyme in St. Peters would like for us to hold another BBQ at their store this year, and we are planning another BBQ at Valenti’s on Mexico Road in St. Peters once the corona virus threat passes.

The BBQ Smokin’ Nobles are already working on items for our 2020 Feztivus Pole for next year’s Feztival of Trees. After last year’s hugely suc-cessful effort, we have decided that our theme for 2020 will be “All Things Missouri”. We will support and advertise our local Missouri businesses as we solicit donations of their products.

If you like to BBQ (or would like to learn how), we invite you to join us on our Virtual Business Meeting held at 7 pm on the fi rst Wednesday of every month (or in our Unit Room once the Shrine re-opens). If you contact any offi cer, we will get you the Zoom meeting link. We have no annual dues, and we have a great time preparing, serving, and eating BBQ with and for our Masonic, Shrine, and military Brothers. Join us!

It is the duty of our Committee to support our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Russell Georgen, in helping to change the lives of our kids through our tradition of serving - “Transfi gurato Vitas Traditio”. It is also our responsibility to support the Shrine by tiling the doors for our Stated Meetings, running the Gift Shop, taking tickets at the meals at our Stated Meetings, and any and all other Potentate requests.

Hospital Reception Committee responsibilities also include conducting Hospital tours and conducting BBQs at the Hospital for patients, their families, and staff. We help staff the reception desk at the Hospital during clinic hours in the morning and afternoon. The fi rst face a patient and their family see when they arrive at our St. Louis Shriners Hospital is a Hospital Reception Committee mem-ber volunteer wearing his fez, and the last face they see when they leave is a Hospital Reception Committee member wearing a fez. The purchase and distribution of toys for the Toy Chest at the Hospital is run by members of the Hospital Re-ception Committee. Our volunteers provide these toys to every patient who sees a doctor in our outpatient clinic, visits our Prosthetic and Ortho-pedic Patient Shop (POPS), or receives physical therapy. Our Kids and their siblings really look forward to this tradition, and it helps guarantee that every one leaves with a smile on their face and a fond memory of their visit.

If you are able to also help support this tradition, please write your non-deductible check to the “Hospital Reception Committee” and designate “Toy Chest Fund” in the “For” section of the check. If you wish to make a tax deductible donation, please make out the check to the “TCAA Toy Chest Fund” (a 501c3 organization). If you have any questions, please contact Jim Gesell at (636) 352-5146.

(Wishful thinking. May it happen as written!} To all that tired of the isolation brought upon us by the Corona Virus Pandemic, congratulations, we coped, we triumphed and we prospered because we faced this thing together. In most cases this tightened the bonds of family and stayed the course until we are all out of this together. Be thankful!

One thing of convenience about having been secluded as we were...we could be sure that when we called, someone would be there to answer!

We Chanters hunkered down as did most, waiting in earnest to be set free to explore the changes brought by the following: We were pleasantly surprised to fi nd that our family ties are tighter. Some clerical duties were found to be unneces-sary. The use of offi ce buildings were found to be expendable. Offi ces were replaced by networking on computers from home. Travel from home to the offi ce became minimal.

The truth be known, there’ll be more changes made!!! When and what, who knows? We under-stood the necessity of the cloistering but we did get lonesome for our fellow Shriners. Also, if we don’t sing soon our pipes will rust. Life together

again has been wonderful. We love the return to normal. We wish a prayer for those thousands who have died as a result of this horrible virus and to their families, may your hurt be minimal and swift passing.

Because of the COVID-19 quarantine and Shrine shutdown, the Muscle Car Unit has begun conduct-ing our monthly Business Meetings on-line. The Zoom meetings are held at our normal meeting time – 7 pm on the fi rst Wednesday of every month.

An upside of the virtual on-line meeting is that our members from outside the area can also participate. Long-time member and former offi cer Greg Martin (now in Atlanta, Georgia) joined us for our meeting on May 6th along with 13 other local members! If you would like to join us, please forward your email address to our Secretary at [email protected].

The Muscle Car Unit participation in Parades is on hold for now. We look forward to showing off our muscle cars and representing the Shrine as soon as possible

New Unit jackets have been purchased for our new members, and they are now being embroi-dered with the Unit, Shrine, and individual muscle car emblems and logos. We are also preparing additional banners and signs for our car doors to advertise the Shrine and the Muscle Car Unit.

Our Whiskey Keg and Special Bicentennial Edition Bourbon Raffl e has been completed, and our next Raffl e will be for stained glass artwork, one of the Silent Messenger and the other of our Shrine Scimitar. Tickets will be 5 for $20.

On a personal note, we offer congratulations to past president Keith Schilb who retired from the FBI on May 1, 2020. We also congratulate mem-ber Travis Mayer who has successfully recovered from the COVID-19 virus.

By Mitch WeinstingWell isn’t this the strangest thing you have ever seen? As I sit in my home offi ce not seeing anyone outside of my home and missing companionship I think this has to end soon. Hopefully by the time you get this issue things will be getting back to normal. I know that the entire month of April was basically cancelled. I don’t know about you but I am not used to being home every night. I hope this fi nds everyone healthy and happy and ready to get together when we are given the all clear. I sure do miss seeing all the nobles. As this is a two month is-sue of the Camel Tales I will list things I hope will be happening in the near future. We hope to be able to have our chicken dinners soon, they are planned for May 8 & June 12. Our poker tournament has been moved to May 9 starting at 11am.

The May meeting will be on 5/18/20, this is a week early due to Memorial Day, the June meeting is set for 6/29/20, come out and see what we have planned for 2020. Watch your email to see if it is cancelled if we are still on lockdown. Folks start showing up around 5:30pm. Come out and enjoy the club and have a good meal and some cool drinks.

The Tiger Shrine club is located at 2315 N Stadium Blvd, Columbia, MO 65202.

The Coronavirus has kept everyone locked down, and as of this writing we still aren’t sure when things will get back to normal. But when we do get back to normal, we hope that you and your Lady will join us for one of our monthly dinner meetings.

If you live in the St. Charles, St. Peters, O’Fallon and areas near by… we would love to have you and your Lady join us at JJ’s Restaurant in O’Fallon on the last Thursday of the month. Arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 to join us for dinner, and at 7:30 the guys have a meeting and the ladies play bunko.

You will fi nd us to be a friendly group of Shriners’ and our Ladies, and we promise to make you and your Lady feel welcome. Give us a try and I can guarantee a great time! If you would like more in-formation about our shrine club and activities give President Dave a call at 636-734-7718.

Noble Lodge’s Regular Communications are anything but regular right now! Until there is more known about the COVID 19 virus and the County Executive lifts the safe-at-home order, we will not know when we will be meeting again. We are currently following guidelines issued by both the Grand Lodge of Missouri and St. Louis County, which will not allow us to meet in person at this time; and without which meetings, we are unable to conduct offi cial business.

Currently, we are abiding by the Edict issued by MWB Stanton T. Brown, II. That edict reminds us that we must abide by all laws, regulations, and guidelines of the Center for Disease Control, the State of Missouri, and St. Louis County, where our Lodge Room is located. Once the safe-at-home orders have ended or amended to allow us to meet, we will certainly have new guidelines to keep us all safe in Lodge.

However, we are fi nding ways now to share each other’s company. We have been meeting online as WM Dr. Tom Cupples has facilitated virtual Meet-and-Greets on WebEx. If anyone is inter-ested in joining us, please contact our Worshipful Master using the above information.

Election of Offi cers traditionally takes place on the fi rst regular communication of June. Hopefully, we will be back in our Lodge Room by then. If not, we will conduct them in our fi rst regular communica-

tion upon return. Please keep an eye out for the Trestleboard via email to be informed.

We will not be doing any degree work until such time as the situation will allow us to safely perform it with guidance from the Grand Lodge of Missouri. However, we welcome all petitions. Feel free to continue to send them in. We will get to them. If necessary, we will use July and August months we normally do not meet to perform the degrees. Please remember that the petition must be signed by two Master Masons, one of which must be a member in good standing at Noble Lodge.

Please stay safe, and if you have any questions or if there is anything Noble Lodge can do for you, please contact an offi cer above.

To get the most up-to-date information on what’s happening at Noble Lodge, check out our website at http://www.noble684.com.

We are looking forward to a fun year, after COVID-19 decides to go away. We have been having Zoom Meetings to conduct necessary business. It is amaz-ing how much life can change in the blink of an eye. The world needs our smiles more than ever.

Our ladies are continuing to fi nd ways to serve the “kids”. They are continuing to make blankets, tote bags for Hospital visit, and stocking up on perisha-ble foods to take to the hospital when we can.

Heather Krastins Lambert, Supreme Queen will be visiting Sydyk Temple No. 107 for a Ceremonial on Sunday, July 12, at 2 p.m. On Monday, July 13, at 10 a.m. will be Supreme Queen’s offi cial visit to our wonderful Shriners Hospital in St. Louis.

Sydyk Temple No. 107 will be having a Mad Hatter Tea Party on September 27, 2020, at the Rose Hill Masonic Temple. This event is open to the public. The price is only $15.00. Reservations must be made in advance. Costumes are encouraged. This fun “Ways and Means” event supports the Hospital from the monies earned.

We sure didn’t expect the world to shut down when we met in February. Sadly, the temple is still closed, and we don’t know when we will be allowed to meet again.

While we cannot meet, there are things you can be doing. Check on your friends. Call to see if they are ok. Make sure everyone is able to get their groceries or has someone to do it for them. Vol-unteer to do this for them if you are able. Protect yourself and others by wearing masks. And if you know how to make them, ask Kathy Kelley or me for the email giving the size dimensions or pattern to make them for the Shrine Hospital Children.

March was supposed to be our grand birthday party. Get some greeting cards and send to other Temple Club members who are celebrating birthdays while we are on lockdown. April was to be our spring showers collection. I’m sure now the organization we provide for needs food as well as personal care items. So buy a couple of things as often as you go to the store so when we can get together again safely, we will be able to fi ll Jeannie’s car to the brim.

And remember to wash your hands frequently and wear a mask when away from home. This protects you and others. And sanitize your hands. We do not want this to happen again in the fall. God be with all of us!

On June 6, 1876, the Imperial Council, the original governing body of the Shriners fraternity, was founded. To honor this important milestone in our history, Shriners International has declared June 6 as Shriners International Awareness Day. On this day, nobles everywhere are encouraged to celebrate their great fraternity and raise awareness of its importance in their communities.

The leadership of Shriners International is mindful that June 6 is also honored as D-Day, the day in 1944 when Allied forces landed on the beach in Normandy to begin the invasion of northern France. While Shriners International certainly honors the valor and courage of everyone who served on D-Day, many historic events happen on a single day;and June 6 also holds a separate, special meaningfor our fraternity.

A Time to Honor and Celebrate Our Rich HeritageOn June 6, Shriners International asks all nobles to publicly display their pride in their fraternity by wearing a fez (when appropriate), hat, shirt, lapel pin, or other item with the Shriners International logo.

In addition to wearing Shriner apparel, Shriners International also encourages all temples and Shrine clubs to organize special events at their temples and in their communities to honor our fraternity’s incredible history and achievements, and invite others to participate, as well.

Along with increasing awareness, these events will also support membership efforts, because the more information we share with our communities about Shriners International, the more potential we build for membership growth. Participating in this international day of recognition will motivate potential members to learn more about us, and also inspire our current members to become more involved.

Shriners International Awareness Day is the perfect opportunity to showcase our pride; share information about our fraternity and the benefits of becoming part of an organization dedicated to fun, fellowship and philanthropy; and highlight the different ways our organizations impact the world around us.

On this day, we ask you to honor our history by sharing both our heritage and your own unique story of being a Shriner, as well as our philanthropy’s mission to improve the lives of children and make the world a better place.

During this time, we hope you also take the time to reflect on why the fraternity is important to you personally, and why you became a member. We are all a part of the greatest organization in the world – we should be proud to share our enthusiasm for the fraternity with the world around us, and Shriners International Awareness Day is a great opportunity to do so.

We hope that every Shriner and every temple will participate in this important opportunity to honor our fraternity.

Wear your fez on Shriners InternationalAwareness Day when appropriate (during anofficial Shriners function).

Show your pride in Shriners International bywearing a hat, shirt, lapel pin, or other item withthe fraternal logo. Your family members can alsowear appropriate clothing items that promotethe fraternity.

Organize an event at your temple or in your localcommunity. Inviting the public to participate willincrease awareness and interest in both yourlocal temple and Shriners International.

Promote Shriners International Awareness Dayon your temple website and social media pages.Announce the date at all club and unit meetingsto ensure all nobles are informed.

Post information about our organizations on yourown social media pages on June 6.

Distribute fraternal literature and pocketpetitions to potential prospects duringcommunity events.

Hold an Open House at your temple.

Contact your local media about your ShrinersInternational Awareness Day events.

Here are a few ways both nobles and temples can get involved:

202020

Zoom meetings become the new normal during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

21

Social distancing doesn’t mean being socially disconnected. There are many ways our nobles, family and friends can keep in touch and support one another in these diffi cult and uncertain times. We’ve put together 6 ways to stay connected:

• Check in with fellow nobles by email, text and phone. This small gesture can make a huge difference.

• Arrange a regular Face Time call with a fellow noble or close friend for a virtual coffee date.

• Set up a Zoom meeting. An online conference call is a great way to continue your club or unit meetings or for several friends to catch up.

• Check in on friends on social media. In addition to the Shriners International social pages and your temple social channels, Shriners Around the World is an active group of nobles, families and supporters. Find the group on Face-book and connect with nobles across the globe.

The oldest living Shriners Hospitals for Children patient turns 103!

Irene Hand Roberts just turned 103 and as far as we know, she is the oldest living Shriners Hospitals for Children patient! Irene was born on April 28, 1917, at her grandmother’s restaurant and boarding hotel in McLaughlin, South Dakota.

In July 1923, at the age of 6, Irene developed what was called infantile paralysis, but is now known as polio. The Hand family and local doctors tried many remedies to help Irene, but they were all unsuccessful. Irene’s luck changed when a small town horse-and-buggy doctor named Dr. Twining, who by chance was a Shriner, referred Irene to the newly opened Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Minnesota, thus beginning Irene’s long and very hard road to recovery.

Irene spent many months at the Shriners Hospital in Minnesota. Her right leg recovered, but her right arm never did. Irene never let having a paralyzed right arm slow her down, though.

Back home Irene had to work very hard to catch up, as she had missed her entire second-grade year. With only one good arm, she experienced many chal-lenges. Yet as time went on, Irene adjusted to her new life and learned how to do things differently.

In 1930, Irene’s father moved the family to Miles City, Montana, after fi nding work as a railroad policeman for the Milwaukee Railroad. Irene was a determined young woman. After graduating from high school, she was in the fi rst graduating class at the new Eastern Montana College in Billings, Montana, where she earned her teaching degree. After graduating, Irene taught school for one year in a one-room school in Ismay, Montana.

Irene met and married Byron Roberts when she was 21, and they have eight children spread out over 22 years. Irene has quite a few grandchildren, and two of her grandsons and one great-grandson played in the Montana East-West Shrine Football game! The family feels this is one way they have given back for the care Irene received from Shriners Hospital. Information and photo provided by Shrinersvillage.com.

Nobles,

As we are all painfully aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended many plans for everyone, and Moolah Shrine is no different. Our Circus is re-scheduled to October, our Spring Ceremonial was cancelled, and numerous other meetings and events have been affected, including rentals of our facility which is a large portion of our overall revenue each year. Time will tell to what degree our budget is ultimately affected but there is much in this situation that is beyond the Divan's control.

The Sportsman's Extravaganza has also been affected by both uncertainty and our inability to meet. At this point we have almost no sales and we do not see how we can recover without being able to meet and distribute tickets along with Nobles having the opportunity to go out and sell the tickets. There is also concern that we may not be able to hold the drawing event which is an important revenue stream. The idea of re-scheduling was considered but with so much already being pushed forward that idea was considered untenable. Therefore, we are going to re-format the Sportsman's Extravaganza and convert it into a more simple raffl e that will benefi t both the Units/Clubs/Committees and Moolah. Below are the basic principles of this modifi ed raffl e:

• There will be fi ve great prizes including Kawasaki Mule PRO-MX LE Traeger 780 Pro Pellet Grill Stack-On Armorguard 40-gun Safe Kamado Joe Classic (egg type) Grill Yeti Tundra Wheeled 45 Navy & Hopper• Tickets will be $10/each with a buy 4 get the 5th ticket free incentive.• The name on the 5th ticket must match the name on the fi rst 4.• Sales will begin as soon as tickets are available but no later than the June Stated Meeting.• Drawing will be held on Saturday, November 28th.• Winners need not be present to win.• The prizes will all be available at Moolah the day of the drawing. Please note these will not be gift cards. They will be the actual prizes listed. • Should a prize become unavailable, we reserve the right to substitute a similar prize of equal or greater value. • Winners will pick up prizes from Moolah, except the Kawasaki Mule which will need to be picked up at Big St. Charles Motorsports. • Any and all Taxes, Title Fees, Registrations and/or any other fees will be the responsibility of the winner.• Arrangements to pick up prizes must be made within 30 days of drawing.• Units/Clubs/Committees and any Masonic related group that would like to participate will receive a commission of 25% of all revenue collected and reported under their name. This equates to the same commission that would have been paid under the original format. It is the Divans hope that the Units/Clubs/Committees and others can use this opportunity to help with those groups budgets that have suffered in this diffi cult time.• The date, time and/or location of the drawing may be changed if necessary. If changed the new information will be communicated through the weekly email and on the Moolah website.

Note: For tickets that have already been sold, for the original Sportsman's Extravaganza, we will refund the money to those few people. You are encouraged to talk to the people you've sold tickets to and ask if they would like to simply turn their ticket(s) into tickets to the revised raffl e. They would get two tickets to the new raffl e for each ticket purchased for the original raffl e. If you have collected money or checks for tickets but have not turned it into the offi ce, you can talk to the people who bought them yourself or, if you prefer, you can turn the tickets and payment into the offi ce and we will contact the purchasers. If you have any problems with refunding or exchanging these tickets, please call me and we will work it out.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support. I look forward to this being a great event for Units/Clubs/Committees and Moolah. Should you have any questions or comments please feel free to call me at my email or phone listed below.Yours in the Faith,

Dean A. Isbell P.P.Sportsman's Extravaganza ChairmanPhone: 314-406-1410E-mail: [email protected]
