MOOC ontwikkelingsscenario
TU Delft Online Learning (Delft Extension School)
Why MOOCs?
TU objectives
• share knowledge with the world
• branding
• attracting better students
• improving residential teaching and educational innovation
• gather data for Learning Analytics and research

Development process of online learning
How to plan an online course
Course Design process
1. Divide your course into Learning Units
2. Define the specific learning objectives for each unit
3. Design the learning activities (try to promote active learning)
4. Specify what resources will be needed (existing or to create)
5. Define the assessment methods
MOOC development
• Professor, scientist, researcher, teacher, student
• e-Learning Developer, Instructional designer,
• Multimedia expert, Studio facilities, Videographer
• Learning platform (edX) & other technologies
• Online learning research, Copyright, Privacy, Marketing
What determines the cost?
1. Length of MOOC and study load
2. Didactical structure (for example: type and # of learning
activities; time for moderation; ......)
3. Available and selected facilities for video production
4. Selected Platform (edX for TU)
5. Creativity and abilities of teacher and course team
6. Estimated cost $50,000-100,000
What have we learned?
• MOOCs raise awareness and motivation for learning innovation
• Increases expertise regarding online and residential learning
• Indications of a positive effect on quality and quantity
• Apply Educational Data Mining (Learning Analytics)
• Online Learning Research
• Design based education • Open research, course reports, experiments, other publications
MOOCs in flipped classroom: quality improvement
• “Able to cover ~30% more material than I used to do in the classical classroom concept”
Student survey • 69% preferred the flipped classroom approach • 13% preferred the classical classroom approach.

Short term (2017)
• At least 2.000 paying students for (accredited/ ProfEd) online education
• 500 extra international students enrolled in campus education
Integrated portfolio
• lifelong learning
• face-to-face
• research

Business Development
• Advices/ supports lecturers in performing market analysis to create demand driven courses
• Before online courses go live supports in e-marketing (e.g. using social media, developing campaigns)
• Developing business to business initiatives in close collaboration with faculty and/ or lecturer (e.g. Offering course to specific employee groups or customers of a corporate academy)
• Developing business models (e.g. Pricing of courses, financial allocation model)
