\ Un Festival au Japon, l’ouverture d’un Mon-treux Jazz Shop à Genève et le premier DVD de Bastian Baker : trois événements forts en quelques jours ont donné à la fin d’année 2013 du Montreux Jazz Festival une saveur toute particulière.

Mais ce n’est pas la quantité qui fait l’intérêt de

cette période, c’est la cohérence de ce programme en apparence si hétérogène. Un mot clé résume toutes ses activités : la fidélité.

En acceptant pour la deuxième année l’invita-

tion de la ville de Kawasaki, le Festival montre au Japon son attachement à un pays qui lui a beaucoup donné. Sans l’aide initiale Sony, nous n’aurions pas été les premiers à filmer des concerts en HD, qui ont fait connaître Montreux là-bas bien sûr, mais dans de nombreux autres pays. Cette avancée tech-nologique a permis de donner un écho supplémen-taire à un patrimoine unique, constitué des milliers d’heures de concerts filmés depuis 1967.

Une part de cet héritage est disponible au

Montreux Jazz Shop en DVD et en Blu-Ray, aux côtés des nombreux produits racontant l’histoire du Festival. Ouvrir une boutique à l’Aéroport de Genève, après celle de Harrods, permet de complé-ter le Montreux Jazz Café situé à quelques mètres, qui fut le premier en 2008 à donner l’occasion de voyager de manière permanente dans le monde du Festival.

Désormais, Bastian Baker y est également diffu-

sé, grâce à l’enregistrement de son concert en juillet 2012. Ce soir-là, il est entré dans la famille définiti-vement. Pas parce qu’il est de Villeneuve, à quelques kilomètres de Montreux, mais parce qu’en plus de son talent, il partage avec Claude Nobs la passion de la musique et un sens unique de la … fidélité.

\ A Festival in Japan, the opening of a Mon-treux Jazz Shop in Geneva, and the first Bastian Baker DVD: three major events that made the end of 2012 especially sweet for the Montreux Jazz Festival. But this festive period of the year is enriched not only by a large number of events, but also by the theme that ties them all together: high fidelity.

By accepting the invitation from the city of Kawasaki for the second year in a row, the Festi-val underscored to Japan our commitment to a country that has always been very generous to us. Without the original assistance from Sony we would not have been the first to film concerts in HD, which of course raised the Montreux Jazz Festival’s profile in Japan, but also in many other countries. This technological leap forward added even greater resonance to a unique cultu-ral heritage comprised of thousands of hours of concert footage dating back to 1967.

Part of that cultural heritage is available at the Montreux Jazz Shop on DVD and Blu-ray, alongside numerous products tracing the his-tory of the Festival. Following on the opening of the first Montreux Jazz Shop at Harrods, our new boutique at the Geneva Airport is the per-fect complement to the original Montreux Jazz Café, situated just a few feet away, and which has been providing year-round access to the world of the Festival since 2008.

From now on, Bastian Baker will also be on the playlist at the Montreux Jazz Café thanks to the recording of his July 2012 concert. That eve-ning he definitively joined the Montreux fami-ly - not because he is from Villeneuve, just a few miles from Montreux, but because in addition to his talent he shares with Claude Nobs a true passion for music and a unique sense of…fidelity.

\ UNE FÊTE DE FAMILLE POUR CÉLÉBRER UNEPREMIÈRE

\ Le dimanche 9 décembre, le Casino de Mon-treux a accueilli le vernissage du premier DVD / Blu-Ray live de Bastian Baker. Près de 1’000 personnes sont venues assister au showcase et à la séance de signature de « l’enfant du pays », entouré de sa famille et de ses amis.

Dire que l’année 2012 a été riche pour Bastian

est un euphémisme. L’année précédente, il a connu un joli succès avec la sortie de son premier album, « Lucky ». Mais ces derniers mois l’ont vu recevoir un disque d’or (plus de 30’000 albums vendus), donner plus de 100 concerts en Suisse romande comme en Suisse allemande et commencer à percer en France. Et à 21 ans seulement…

Bien au-delà de ces succès, ce qui frappe chez lui

c’est son humilité là où d’autres auraient pu sombrer dans les affres de l’ego. Bastian sait ce qu’il veut et n’a pas peur de rêver à la suite, mais il est resté le même, avec toujours un mot gentil pour son entourage comme pour les inconnus venus l’applaudir.

Et pourtant l’enthousiasme de ses fans doit être

saisissant pour lui. A quelques minutes de l’ouverture des portes du vernissage, un public impatient chantait ses titres dans le hall d’entrée. Une fois dans la salle, tout le monde écoutait sagement le chanteur discuter avec Claude Nobs et remercier tous ceux qui étaient là. Avec beaucoup d’émotions, les deux compères ont raconter la genèse de ce DVD / Blu-Ray, qui inscrit Bastian Baker dans la liste des artistes ayant « leur » DVD de Montreux, de Phil Collins à Carlos Santana, en passant par Patti Smith ou Deep Purple ! Non seu-lement il est l’un des très rares suisses à figurer dans cette collection, mais il y entre très rapidement. Non pas parce qu’il a grandi à quelques mètres du Festi-val, mais simplement parce que son talent frappe tous ceux qui l’ont vu. Et il ne serait pas surprenant que ce DVD / Blu-Ray ne soit pas le seul et que d’ici quelques années un « Bastian Baker plays his grea-test hits in Montreux » vienne saluer une carrière qui s’annonce prometteuse.

\ A FAMILY GET-TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE A PREMIERE

\ On Sunday 9 December the Montreux Ca-sino hosted the release party for Bastian Baker’s first live-performance DVD/Blu-ray. Nearly 1000 people took part in the showcase and in the signature session for this “hometown boy,” surrounded by his family and friends.

Saying that the year 2012 was a good one for Bastian would be a massive understatement.

The previous year hadn’t been too shabby, with the successful release of his first album, “Lucky.” But over the past few months Bastian has ear-ned a gold record (more than 30,000 albums sold), given more than 100 concerts all over Switzerland, and started breaking through in France—at only 21 years of age!

But even more striking than all of his suc-cess is that he has remained humble where others could have allowed their egos free reign. Bastian knows what he wants and he isn’t afraid to dream ever bigger dreams, but he has stayed the same, and always has kind words for both his entourage and anyone else who comes out to cheer him on.

That certainly doesn’t mean Bastian isn’t reveling in the enthusiasm, however! Even before the doors opened for the release party, impatient fans were singing his songs in the en-try hall. As soon as they entered the venue, the fans hung on every word as Bastian discussed with Claude Nobs and thanked everyone for being there. Not without emotion, the two friends and collaborators told how this DVD/Blu-ray came about, thereby adding Bastian Baker to the list of artists with “their” Mon-treux DVD: from Phil Collins to Carlos Santa-na, from Patti Smith to Deep Purple! Not only is Bastian one of only very few Swiss artists in the collection, he is one of the youngest as well—not because he grew up down the road from the Festival, but for the simple reason that his talent is immediately apparent to any who have ever seen him. We wouldn’t be surprised if this DVD/Blu-ray turns out not to be the only one for Bastian—perhaps “Bastian Baker plays his greatest hits in Montreux” is down the line in his promising career!

\ LE MONTREUX JAZZ CAFÉ ACCUEILLE UNE FUNKY CLAUDE’S LOUNGE ET UN MONTREUX JAZZ SHOP

\ Ce début de mois de décembre a permis à Montreux Jazz International de célébrer à Genève deux événements : l’adaptation du concept de Funky Claude’s Lounge en lieu et place du Backstage et la création d’un Montreux Jazz Shop permanent, en face du restaurant.

Pourquoi avez-vous décidé de changer l’es-

pace Backstage, situé à l’arrière du Montreux Jazz Café depuis sa création en 2008 ?

Si l’esprit du Montreux Jazz Café est identique depuis ses débuts, le design a évolué depuis 2008, no-tamment suite à l’ouverture chez Harrods cette année. Nous avons donc décidé de « mettre à jour » celui de Genève en créant la Funky Claude’s Lounge. Cet espace symbolise la convivialité du Chalet de Claude Nobs, où les artistes apprécient le côté simple et fami-lial, mais aussi les plaisirs de la table. Des photos et des objets rappellent ce lieu, tout comme la carte qui met à l’honneur des produits consommés chez lui durant le Festival.

Le Montreux Jazz Shop est aussi une nou-

veauté importante…

Le concept existait déjà à Montreux depuis plu-sieurs années, ainsi que chez Harrods. L’envie existait depuis longtemps d’ouvrir à Genève. Lorsque l’op-portunité s’est présentée, nous n’avons pas hésité ! Il s’agit d’un magasin de proximité qui intègre dans son offre du merchandising lié au Festival, comme les DVD ou les vêtements, mais aussi des produits fidèles à l’esprit de Claude ; qualité et simplicité, mais aussi goûts du terroir, grâce à des producteurs fidèles aux traditions, que ce soit en Gruyère, en Valais ou dans le canton de Vaud !

\ THE MONTREUX JAZZ CAFÉ WELCOMES A FUNKY CLAUDE’S LOUNGE AND A MONTREUX JAZZ SHOP

\ This December 1st Montreux Jazz Inter-national celebrated two events in Geneva: the Backstage of the Montreux Jazz Café was trans-formed into a Funky Claude’s Lounge, and a year-round Montreux Jazz Shop was inaugura-ted across from the restaurant.

We spoke with Laurent Buri, COO of Mon-treux Jazz International, to get a better idea about these two new establishments.

Why did you decide to change out the Backstage area that has been in place since the creation of the Montreux Jazz Café in 2008?

While the spirit of the Montreux Jazz Café has remained exactly the same since the begin-ning, the design has evolved since 2008, espe-cially following this year’s opening at Harrods. We decided to “update” our establishment in Geneva by creating a Funky Claude’s Lounge. This space symbolizes the conviviality of Claude Nobs’ Chalet, a place where the artists enjoy a simple, family ambiance, but also ex-cellent dining. Photos and objects call to mind that mythic place, as does the menu showcasing favorites served at Claude’s during the Festival.

The Montreux Jazz Shop is also a major new establishment…

The concept has been around at Montreux for several years, as well as at Harrods. We had been looking to open one in Geneva for quite a while. As soon as the opportunity arose, we jumped at it! In addition to Festival-rela-ted merchandise like DVDs and clothing, our convenient storefront offers products in line with Claude’s lifestyle—quality and simplici-ty, and also local flavors, thanks to artisans in touch with tradition from the various regions surrounding Montreux.

\ Montreux Jazz Festival in Japan !

Pour la deuxième année, Kawasaki a accueilli le «Montreux Jazz Festival Japan». La ville proche de Tokyo a en effet demandé en 2011 au Festival de par-ticiper à son programme culturel et accueille durant plusieurs jours des artistes internationaux s’étant déjà produits à Montreux, mais aussi des grands noms de la scène japonaise, principalement dans le jazz. L’enthou-siasme du public et des autorités locales témoignent des liens particuliers qui unissent le Festival et le Japon depuis de nombreuses années. For the second year in a row, Kawasaki hosted the “Montreux Jazz Festival Japan.” In 2011, this city not far from Tokyo contacted the Festival about being a part of its cultural program. The result was several days of per-formances by international artists who had already played Montreux as well as shows by major Japanese talents, particularly jazz musi-cians. The enthusiasm of the audiences and the local officials underscores the special bond that has developed over the years between Japan and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
