The Monthly Weather Review - Victoria is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's VictoriaClimate Services Centre.

It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Victoria forthe month.

To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although everyeffort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality controlprocedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres per hour(km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Victoria makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past 24 hoursis determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the following conventions areused for assigning dates to the observations made:

Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day.

Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day.

Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have occurred onthe previous calendar day.

Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.

Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from all available yearsof record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then becalculated reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from available observations from all available years of record. Thenumber of years can vary substantially from site to site.

Another particularly wet month in Victoria has putthe state on track for its wettest year in more thana decade. Rainfall across the state this month wasthe highest since 1993. Several major events broughtrainfall of over 50 mm to much of Victoria whichmeant that averages were exceeded in mid-Octoberfor most regions. Temperatures were very close tousual with days and nights only slightly warmer thannormal. Eastern Victoria recorded above averagetemperatures in both maximum and minimum, eventhough the departure from normal was less than 1 °C.

Significant weatherMajor rain events bring double the averageOctober rainfall to the northA couple of major rain events affected Victoria duringthe month of October. These systems brought muchof central Victoria more than 1.5 times the Octobermonthly average rainfall and northern regions inexcess of twice the October monthly average. Thefirst of these events occurred in the middle of themonth as a trough moved across the state on the12th and 13th, followed by the rapid development ofa low over northern Victoria, which moved across thestate on the 15th. Some parts of the state receivedsignificant rainfall in each of the 24 hour periods to9 am on the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th, with thehighest totals recorded on the last of these days.Highest rainfall totals were in the northeast of thestate, with many places recording in excess of120 mm for the 4 days. In fact, the highest rainfalltotals for this event were 174.2 mm at Nariel Creekand 167.0 mm at Bullioh. A number of flood warningswere issued for the event including a major floodwarning for the Murray River upstream of Lake Hume(more details below). Strong winds were alsoexperienced with the progression of the low, mainlyat elevated and coastal locations. The strongest was a122 km/h gust at Wilsons Promontory.

The second rain event occurred at the end of themonth. A slow moving low pressure systemdeveloped over the west of the state late on the 29th,then gradually progressed eastward on the 30thbefore slipping south of Tasmania on the 31st. Rainbegan falling over central parts of the state during theafternoon of the 30th and remained persistent rightthrough the night. The heaviest falls were recordedin central and north-eastern Victoria, with manylocations recording in excess of 100 mm. MountHotham recorded the highest rainfall with 152.0 mm.Once again, strong winds at elevated locations werealso associated with this low, the strongest being a139 km/h gust at Mt Hotham and a 128 km/h gust atMt Buller associated with a 96 km/h mean wind.

Flooding rains across northern and centralVictoriaThe Hydrology section was busy again in October,issuing a total of 135 flood warnings across the state(122 Minor, 4 Moderate and 9 Major). Flood Watcheswere issued for expected weekend rainfall on the15th and 16th for all catchments north of the divide,as well as the Melbourne metro and Barwoncatchments in the south.

Flooding developed across the weekend with the bulkof the flooding occurring in the northern catchments.The Yarra River was again in flood around Yarra Glenand Healesville. The worst of the flooding wasexperienced in the Murray River upstream of LakeHume with Major flooding occurring. As a result,controlled releases from Hume Dam led to Minor

flooding along the Murray river around the Corowaregion.

Synoptic summaryAfter a particularly cool, wet start to spring,temperatures in October were very close to averagewhilst wet conditions continued. The presence ofnorthwest cloudbands brought tropical moisture tothe region and frequently combined with frontalsystems over Victoria, resulting in above averagerainfall state-wide this month.

October started with warm, dry conditions due to theproximity of a slow moving high pressure systembetween the 1st and 4th. A series of low pressuretroughs and frontal systems brought some localisedrainfall to the state between the 5th and the 7th,with parts of Victoria receiving 25 mm. Cloud coverand south-westerly flow created wintry daytimetemperatures for much of the state on the 7th.

Another slow moving high pressure system broughtmainly clear conditions to Victoria prior to a troughand front combining over Victoria on the 12th. Thecentre of the low formed in central Victoria, deliveringfour very wet days to central and northern Victoria inparticular. Strong winds, hail and heavy rainfall werereported, with some locations receiving over 120 mmover the 5 day period. The position of the systemallowed unseasonably cool conditions, with mostlocations recording daytime temperatures below15 °C and night-time temperatures less than 6 °C. Thecentre of the low pressure system penetrated wellinland, moving slowly over central and easternVictoria on the 15th. The associated icy conditionswere conducive to late season snow falls with Noojeeand Strathbogie reporting snow on the 16th.

Sunny days on the 20th, 21st and 22nd were due toa high pressure system and the associated northerlyflow which directed warm, dry air to the region.Temperatures soared above 25 °C across most of thestate and little or no rainfall was registered on thesedays. The passing of a frontal system on the 23rd and24th delivered moderate falls, particularly in the east.

Several weak systems moved across Victoria early inthe final week of the month. The warmest day formuch of the state was the 29th, temperaturesclimbing above 30 °C in the Mallee and Wimmera andtemperatures in the high twenties elsewhere. Evensome areas in the Alpine region exceeded 20 °C onthe 29th. Following on from a warm day, theminimum temperature recorded on the 30th wasparticularly balmy. Cloud cover moved in prior toanother intense low pressure system and tropicaltrough combination on the weekend of the 30th and31st, driving substantial convection. This systemresulted in long lasting showers, with rainfall in the 24hours till 9 am on the 31st totalling more than 50 mmacross much of central Victoria.

TemperaturesThe mean temperature for Victoria in October 2010was 13.75 °C, which is just above the long-termaverage. Both minimum and maximum temperaturesfor the state were marginally above average overall.Some areas in the north, however, experienced daysand nights a fraction colder than that usuallyexpected in October, whilst Gippsland observedmaxima and minima above the long-term average.

Maximum temperaturesAfter a particularly cool start to spring, daytimetemperatures this month were very close to theclimatological average. There were only a few daysthat were significantly different to normal, with a coldburst between the 15th and 17th keepingtemperatures across the state below 15 °C. The 16thwas the coldest day in the Alpine region with MountBuller, Mount Hotham and Mount Baw Baw allrecording sub-zero temperatures. These threelocations also experienced the coolest days onaverage this month. Surprisingly, the coldest daytimetemperature on the 15th was observed outside of theAlpine area, with many locations in the southwestof the state recording maximum temperatures below8 °C. The Grampians (Mount William) and Pyrenees(Ben Nevis) were the coldest locations in the stateon this occasion, recording just 3.6 °C and 4.7 °Crespectively.

Temperatures in excess of 25 °C were recorded acrossthe state on numerous occasions, with the northwestconsistently observing temperatures in the hightwenties. Not surprisingly, the warmest days thismonth were all recorded in this region with MilduraAirport, Ouyen Post Office and Walpeup Research,averaging 23 °C. The warmest days across the statewere the 22nd and 29th. On both occasions,temperatures shot above 25 °C as a result of strong,dry northerly winds associated with a slow movinghigh pressure system. Mildura Airport and Ouyen PostOffice both registered a summery daily maximum of31.6 °C on the 22nd, whilst the hottest day was32.8 °C at Mildura Airport on the 29th. Interestingly,Melbourne Regional Office did not record a maximumtemperature over 30 °C in October 2010, the warmestday a pleasant 28.9 °C on the 22nd.

Minimum temperaturesCool overnight temperatures and a significant lowpressure system over Victoria on the 15th and 16th,brought post-ski season snow to the Alpine region,with snow observed at both Noojee and Strathbogieon the 16th. Mount Hotham was the coolest locationof the month, averaging nightly temperatures of just1.3 °C and a frosty −7.6 °C on the 16th. Severalparticularly cool nights this month kept minimumtemperatures close to the long-term average. A frostynight on the 6th pushed overnight temperaturesbelow 5 °C across the Central and Wimmera districts,with Dartmoor, Casterton and Horsham stations allregistering temperatures below 4 °C. Icy nights inGippsland were also frequent this month with Omeo,Strathbogie and Yarram Airport recording sub-zeroconditions on the 2nd and 20th.

Night-time temperatures above 15 °C were notcommon this month. The warmest nights were the4th, 12th, 13th, 30th and 31st, due to warm northerlyflow and pre-frontal cloud keeping temperatures wellabove normal. The 4th and 13th were warm acrossthe north of the state; however temperatures wereonly marginally above 16 °C. Melbourne RegionalOffice experienced night-time temperatures over18 °C on the 12th and 30th, whilst Point HicksLighthouse observed 19.0 °C overnight on the 31st.Although Gabo Island Lighthouse observed Octobernights right on their long term average of 11.5 °C,these night-time temperatures were the warmest onaverage across the state.

RainfallRainfall across the state this month was well aboveaverage, particularly in the Mallee, Northern Country,Central and North Central districts. Patches of theWimmera and South Gippsland districts were belowaverage; however Victoria as a whole recorded itshighest average rainfall since 1993.

Gippsland has been experiencing particularly dryconditions in 2010, however this month manyGippsland stations recorded rainfall in excess of100 mm, with Mount Nowa Nowa and Gelantipy bothalmost double their long-term averages.

Consistent rain across the northern and centralregions was the main feature of the rainfall thismonth. Tropical convection continued to play a rolewhen a northwest cloudband combined with a frontalsystem on the 6th and 7th to bring several millimetresof welcome rain to the farmers attending the ElmoreField days in the state’s north.

Several troughs across mainland Australia, and aparticularly deep and strongly amplifying lowpressure system, passed across the Victorian regionin mid-October, resulting in substantial rainfalls formuch of the state. Regular rainfall between the 13thand 17th brought up to 25 mm per day to a fewlocations, with up to 100 mm falling in the northeastdistrict in the 24 hours till 9 am on the 16th. In fact,Nariel Creek (Simpson) received 88 mm in just oneday associated with this system, and was also oneof the wettest locations this month with 286.2 mm.However, a neighbouring station in the northeast,Koetong, was the wettest location in Victoria thismonth, recording 299.2 mm, the station's highestOctober rainfall on record.

Some regions in the Wimmera, close to the stateborder, received less rain than usual, but a majorrainfall event on the 30th and 31st brought themonthly totals closer to what is typically expected inOctober. In fact, a host of stations across the staterecorded their highest daily October rainfall on recordin this event, with Moorabbin Airport (72.0 mm) andKyneton (70.6 mm) receiving the equivalent of atypical October’s rainfall in just one day. Derby Daywas certainly an interesting event this year, with60 mm falling over Flemington Racecourse on raceday due to this system.
