Cloud in a Jar

SUPPLIES

Clear jar with lid

1/3 cup hot water

Ice

Hairspray

ENGAGE Invite your child to join you at the table or kitchen counter. Pour 1/3 cup of hot water into the clear jar and

swirl the water around to heat up the sides of the jar. Turn the jar’s lid upside down and set it on top of the

jar. Then, place several ice cubes onto the lid and let the ice sit for about 20 seconds.

Remove the lid and quickly spray a bit of hairspray into the jar, replacing the lid with the ice immediately after.

The cooled water vapor in the jar will attach to the hairspray particles to form a cloud. (You should see cooled

condensation or a cloud forming near the top, which can be released into the air by removing the lid.)

Ask your child: What do you see inside the jar? Let them respond. Those are great ideas! This reminds me of

the clouds. Where do we see clouds? Let them respond. Yes, that’s right! We see clouds outside when we

look up into the sky! Clouds and the sky remind me of some things that we will hear about in our true story

from the Bible today. I’m excited to learn about it with you, let’s get ready!

Why this Bible lesson matters: Jesus’ friends didn’t fully understand what

had happened to Jesus and why He died on the cross. They were hoping that He

would save them from the harsh Roman rulers and become their earthly King.

However, Jesus was coming that time to save them (and us) from sin so that we

can have a relationship with God. God is loving and He WANTS to have a

relationship with the people He has made. All of us have done wrong things called

“sin” (Sin = anything we think, say or do that disobeys or displeases God). God sent

Jesus to make a way for our sinful hearts to be made clean. Jesus died on the cross

for our sins and rose again three days later. After Jesus was raised to life, He

appeared to His friends and many others before going back up to heaven. He spent

40 days showing Himself to lots of people who could talk with Him, touch Him and

see that He was alive! Jesus rose again just like He said He would. He now lives in

heaven, and if we believe that He did this for us, then we can have a relationship

with God and live forever with Him in heaven someday. What an amazing and

awesome truth to share with the kids and those around us!

ENGAGE

Sing this song to the tune, “Wheels on the Bus.”

Jesus rose and saw His friends,

saw His friends, saw His friends.

Jesus rose and saw His friends, for 40 days.

Jesus went up into heaven,

into heaven, into heaven.

Jesus went up into heaven, to be with God.

Jesus wants us to tell others,

tell others, tell others.

Jesus wants us to tell others, He loves them too!

Up in a Cloud

SUPPLIES

“Up in a Cloud Craft” on white paper, 1 cloud & 1 Jesus picture per child (printout included at end of

lesson)

20-inch length of yarn/string/ribbon** (see note below)

Hole punch or scissors** (see note below)

Clear tape

Crayons

ENGAGE Invite your child to color the first page while you cut out 1 cloud and 1 Jesus picture from the second page for

them to use later.

(**If you don’t have any yarn/string/ribbon then you can skip these steps. Your child can use his/her hand to

move the Jesus figure up into the cloud instead of pulling on the yarn.) Punch a hole (or use scissors) in the

center top and bottom of their activity page where noted and thread a piece of yarn through each hole. Tie off

the ends of the yarn in the back near the top hole. Tape Jesus figure to the piece of yarn. Then help them put

tape on the opposite ends of the large cloud and attach it near the top of their activity page. (Make sure the

Jesus figure has space to easily be pulled up behind it.) Your child can pull the string in the back to move Jesus

from standing on the ground with His disciples to ascend up to heaven in a cloud.

In our true story from the Bible, Jesus did something that really surprised His special friends, the disciples.

What did he do? Let your child respond. That’s right! He went up in the clouds back to heaven! Before that

even happened, Jesus’ friends were amazed that He was alive. Remember, Jesus died on the cross and was

buried in the tomb. Three days later He was raised back to life and appeared to lots of people. Jesus spent

many days with his friends, but then it was time for Him to go back to heaven. Jesus rose up in the clouds

and went back to heaven, and his friends went to tell all the people that Jesus had come to be their Savior

and friend forever!
