Community Planning and Building Monthly Summary- January
Attached are the January 2016 activity reports for the Planning Permits, Building Permits, Encroachment Permits, and Code Compliance Cases.
PLANNING AND BUILDING TRENDS:
In January, 33 Planning Permit, 39 Building Permit, and 12 Encroachment Permit applications were submitted.
CODE COMPLIANCE TRENDS:
For Code Compliance, City staff fielded a total of 18 code compliance requests. Code Compliance staff continues to work on open cases to bring these to resolution. For the requests logged this month, the average initial investigation turn-around time was 1 to 2 business days.
CURRENT ACTIVITES
• The City's new permit technician, Shoshana Wangerin, began work as a full-time employee with the City on February 16th. Shoshana had been working for the City as a contract permit technician over the past 4 months and we are glad to bring her on board as a full-time employee.
• The "Home of the Month" Subcommittee was established by the Historic Resources Board as a way to honor some of the City's best historic homes during the centennial year. The subcommittee saw its first publication in the Pine Cone on February 19th, with a featured article on the Charles Sumner Greene Studio. The Bark House will be featured next. Special thanks to Paul Miller for publishing the article, Board Member Julie Wendt for writing the article, and Commissioner lan Martin for taking the photographs.
• The Planning Commission will review a potential draft ordinance that would regulate wood burning fireplaces in new homes. The draft ordinance would likely regulate the type of wood burning devices that can
30
be installed, rather than including an outright ban on wood burning devices. This item will be considered on the March g th Planning Commission meeting.
• At the February 1 Qth Planning Commission meeting the Commission reviewed and accepted the recommendations made by the Roofing Subcommittee on certain roofing materials. The Planning Commission will now allow certain roofing materials as an alternative to wood shakes and shingles. The Planning Commission will review its decision in one year and determine if it intends to continue allowing alternative materials.
• Over the past 12 months the City Council issued two separate use permits for the y th & Dolores (Event Center) site. UP 14-19 allows live music from the site and UP 15-282 allows commercial parking. Staff was required to provide the City Council with an update on both use permits within 6-12 months. Staff notes that there have not been any complaints or issues identified in association with the activities allowed under both use permits.
