Monthly Report on “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” atJaishree Green City, Argora, Ranchi

Swatchata se swatsthya ki aur……….

Following the call by our Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, an initiative to startSwachh Bharat Abhiyan at Jaishree Gren City was taken by some of the residents of theApartment complex. Jaishree Gren City is located at Argora ward of ranchi, Jharkhand. Thecomplex is having six blocks each with 9+1 storied buildings. Each building is having 36 flats.Thus there are 216 flats within estimated population of about 800 persons. Each block is havingseparate society.

The present system of waste collection & disposal comprises of door to door collection frommajority of flats. This waste is then disposed-off into the community bin provided by the RanchiMunicipal Corporation. No segregation of waste is carried out. The waste disposal system wasnot effective with the filth lying all over the place as there was no one to do overallcoordination amongst the different blocks and the municipal authorities. Some of the residentsare directly throwing the waste into the community bin or surrounding areas. Before startingthe Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a meeting was called on 28th September, 2014 and a proposal toform a Committee was discussed. It was decided to tentatively name it as “Argora ParyawaranSanrakshan Samiti”.

Indian Association of Energy Management Professionals (www.iaemp.in) whose Jharkhandstate centre office is also located in the complex volunteered to lead the movement andprovide seed money of Rs. 3000/- and technical knowhow to take-up the cleanliness drive. Aswe progressed, more and more residents started contributing funds to pay for expenses andhired laborers. Many came forward to work on voluntary basis to do “Shram Dan”. The initialseed money provided by IAEMP was spent on tools, poster, banners, pamphlets etc. Thedetailed account of income & expenditure has been given in the Annexure-I. The wardcorporator Ms. Sabita Kujur helped us by providing support for removal of waste fromcommunity bin. Mr. Mahadev Bhengra, Supervisor, Ranchi Nagar Nigam has been helping uswhenever needed by sending the staff and waste disposable truck.

Our strategy was very simple:-

Do whatever can be done by ourselves in our free time. Organise ‘Sunday Morning Cleanliness Drives’ with arrangement for breakfast, if

possible. Hire a paid worker for tough jobs. Take help of Municipal corporation staff.

One positive point was observed that some of the residents and block committees startedtaking initiatives on their own and sort of healthy competition begin amongst different blocksfor example, E-Block residents pooled together an amount of Rs. 4000/- and got the land infront of the block cleaned and leveled for the children to play badminton/volleyball etc. Somepeople purchased flower plants and got them planted.”

Our final objective is to adopt the “Waste Management Hierarchy” so that the wastegeneration is minimize, segregated, recycled, composted etc and only the medical andhazardous waste is sent out of the complex. We will also be addressing the issues ofSafety,Health,Energy & Water conservation and efficiency, Traffic and other issues includingorganizing cultural and sports events.

Overall, it has been a good start and last one month’s experience gives us confidence that ourwell intentioned and concerted efforts will surely succeed and hope that our final objectiveswill be realized sooner than later. Because of the cleanliness drive carried out ‘Deepawali”celebrations were enjoyed more with joint celebrations and food etc.
