—STEVE PAUL— To Be Inducted into the SEPA Hall of Fame

Recently our Chairman of the Board has taken over the duty of nominations from our club to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soc-cer Hall of Fame (Old-Timers). It needed to be done and he did it.

MONTHLY PROGRESS NOW ONLINE WITH ISSUU.COM

While our membership is strong its de-mographics are changing. It is important that we grow and change with it. We are, as a club, growing younger every year in members as we grow older in experience. Even our elders are embracing technology and many have made the jump with this publication to the digital method of receiving it. This short article will introduce you to the next step in that process. Issuu is an online digital free publishing platform. What issuu offers is the ability to access the content of the uploaded publica-tion on any device. Media outlets like “The New York Times” are partnered with issuu. As a whole, issuu has over 21 million publica-tions. The German Hungarians Monthly Pro-gress is the next one. In addition, issuu has unlimited storage space that will allow our members access to previous volumes, issues and articles of our great paper. With the 75th Anniversary just five years away, this can be a great tool to keep an archive of our “official organ.” Those members who receive the newspa-per via email will still have access the same way. There will still be a monthly email from the editor with the link to the file. The only difference will be that that link will take you to our profile on issuu.com, in particular the most current issue. There you can read the paper in the issuu reader. As always the most current Month will still be available on our website at www.ughclub.us The members who have paid for the news-paper to be mailed through the US Postal Service will still receive the publication in that manner. The hope is that this tool can benefit us in keeping a public record and getting the most current social information to you as members through the Monthly Progress!

—DANCING AROUND— GH Wins 5 Prizes at Schuhplattler Competition

March 7, 2015 at Delaware Saengerbund Hosted by the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe

Congratulations to: Mikaela Malofiy – First Place 18 to 20 girls

Steven Paul – First Place 14 to 17 boys Karina Fricker – First Place 14 to 17 girls

Emma Walter – Second Place 14 to 17 girls Kyra Malofiy – First Place 10 to 13 girls

Seven Clubs participated: Enzian Volkstanzgruppe – Newark, Delaware Alpenrose Schuhplattler Verein – Lancaster, PA United German Hungarians – Oakford, PA GTV Edelweiss – Reading, PA Alt Washingtonia Edelweiss Passaic, NJ Germania Almrausch SV – Poughkeepsie, NY

There were 30 couples who danced alt-hough a couple participates, each boy and girls are judged as individuals. There were 30 couples who danced however, this did not mean that 30 boys and 30 girls (60) danced as five girls danced twice while 10 boys danced two or more times. There were eight categories: 18 to 20 boys and girls; 14 to 17 boys and girls; 10 to 13 boys and girls; and under 9 boys and girls. We were very proud of all our dancers and were especially pleased with Genevieve Avrich, age 2, who danced with Steven Paul. She was the young-est participant in the entire Einzelplattler event. Another unique dancer was our Chris-topher Deely, age 5, who performed “Schuhplattler on Wheels.” Christopher per-formed with his cousin, Kyra Malofiy. Both Genevieve and Christopher t performed in time to the music and received much ap-plause. These two were only critiqued. A number of our Schuhplattler dancers were on hand to cheer the competing group and a number of our dancers remained for an event, which was held in the evening. All had a good time at both events.

—’JEFF CUP’ CONTINUED— great game that ended with a 3-0 win with one goal from Kerri McGinley and two from Sidney Doherty. The entire weekend was great with three wins and a total of 10 goals for and only one goal against. As we were on our way home, we were not sure if we had won the tournament, but as we were driving we got the news that we had the most wins and points and this confirmed that we indeed did win our bracket at the 2015 Jefferson Cup.

—MAJORS CORNER— (4-3-1), (W-T-L) as of (3/31/15)

Major Division play remains stagnant in the USLPA so far this spring. As club fields continue to be closed, controversy looms as to whether or not East Penn’s only Elite US Amateur League will manage to finish the season. We would print the schedule here but we change it too often to be considered timely. Check unitedsoccerleague.us

—WEEKLY SANDWICH BOARD— YOU GET A SANDWICH! YOU GET A SANDWICH!

SANDWICHES FOR ALL! Active members already know that the Kitchen Committee, under Connie and John Reiter hold a weekly sandwich board on Tuesday nights. Sandwiches and other quick meals are served from 6:30pm in the club-house usually for around $5.00. Chips and a pickle are included. All members are encouraged to take ad-vantage of this great service when coming to the club on Tuesday nights for dance or soc-cer practice, meetings of any sort or simply just to be a socially minded member of our club!

—GETTING TO KNOW YOU— DR. JOE DE CARLO, is a Certified Chiropractic

Sports Physician from Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. He is best known as “Dr. Joe” to all the major team players and friends. His job is to cover all medical issues before, during, and after games for the major team. His work includes

pregame taping, stretching, soft tissue work, game time injuries or emergencies, post-game treatment, and recommendations for the players. Joe is a doctor of chiropractic, he is sports certified to treat on-field injuries, and athletic injuries overall and full body certified in Active Release Technique (ART). He is also certified in Kinesio Taping and In-strument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). Joe received his degrees from Mar-ist College, Penn State, and Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic. He has been in practice for 27 years. Joe played soccer while attending Marist College in New York and coached for four years at Council Rock United as well as being a team doctor for FC Bucks, Delco, and PDA teams for a total of seven years combined. Dr. Joe became involved with the major team by having Michael Curley, the current coach of the major team, as a patient. During this time, Joe and his wife Wendy were helping their youngest daughter find a college where she could play soccer. Curley helped the De Carlos immensely with advice as to what to do and what to look for. Because of this, Dr. Joe decided in order to return the favor, to come out to the club and help the team with anything he could. “I honestly did it because I was very grateful to Mike for all his help and I thought this would be a nice way to thank him. The rest is history…as I have not missed any games since- Mike, Werner, and Brian Blesi do a fantastic job coaching and manag-ing the team affairs and they’re all great guys,” Joe explained. Joe describes the United German Hungari-ans in one word: integrity. The entire club, especially the major team, has endless re-spect for Dr. Joe De Carlo. Sometimes we don’t realize all the work that gets done in the background, but with Dr. Joe, the team runs more easily and smoothly. The players and staff of the major team are proud to work alongside someone like Dr. Joe.

—THE EMPEROR’S WALTZ— I would be remiss if I did not mention that the “waltz” performed by our dancers at our 105th Anniversary Banquet was a sight to behold. It was “poetry in motion.” I do not have the words to express the beauty of the dance, the dancers, and the music. This waltz is without a doubt one of the most beautiful of Johann Strauss’ creations and it is also one of the most beautiful choreographs done by Marlene Fricker. Without a doubt, although the dancers performed this in May of 2014, this was a very special performance, beauti-fully executed by each group member. Their smiles, the way they held their bodies, their arms and the perfection of each movement could not have been more beautiful. It was one of those times when everything came together. As the dancers ended this dance by leaving the floor, the applause was huge and the audience all stood in unison to acknowledge its perfection.

—’PAUL’ CONTINUED— From 1977 to 1978, Paul played on our club’s Reserve Team before he was moved up to the Major team. In 1977 with us, he would begin a storied career in the East Penn. He played until 1981 with our Majors, from 1981-1986 he was with Alex Ely’s America in the First Division and then starting in 1984 in the Major. In 1982, Steve spent two weeks with the Philadelphia Fever of the Major Indoor Soccer League. From 1986 to 1988, Paul played with Phoenix SC’s Second Division Inter-County League Team and moved up to the First Division Team from 1988 to 1995. From 1995 to 2002, Steve Paul finished his career as a player with Phoenix SC’s O-30 team in the United League. Paul first coached the Council Rock United Youth Intramural Program from 1976 to 1978. He then coached the Phoenix SC First Division Team from 1989 to 1995. Then the Phoenix SC O-30 from 1995-1999. From 2003 to 2004, he coached our club’s U-11 Girls and from 2006 to present, he coaches the Erzge-birge U-17 Boys. From 1994 to 1999, Steve Paul was the Phoenix SC Sports Director. He was elected to our Board of Governors in 1998 and serves to this day. In 2005, he was elected Chairman by that board, and this year he was re-elected to that post. Within our organization, Steve has accomplished much. He has held various chairman's positions. He was a member of our early cultural group and continues to support the dance groups to this day. We are very proud of Steve and would like to wish him congratulations on this honor. Thank you, Steve for your work in Soccer!
