The Youth Basketball League provides an opportunity for our youth to engage in physical activity, and to have fun and not even notice they are being active. The goal for the youth basketball league is to participate equally in the game of basketball with other kids of various skill levels and to also have a fun experience regardless of their skill level. The league also promotes learning the basic fundamentals of basketball, sportsmanship, and character. Most of all, the league is to promote physical activity among the youth and to learn healthy behaviors. Along with promoting physical activity among the youth, another goal we encourage is changing overall healthy behaviors. Our program suggests changing these behaviors in a positive manner by: 9 hours of sleep every night 5 or more fruits and veggies a day 2 hours of screen time or less a day 1 hour of physical activity a day 0 sugar sweetened drinks These are some great tips to help our youth & their families make healthy changes at home to prevent childhood obesity & diabetes. Most schools participate in the USDA School Lunch program and are required to follow their Local School Well-ness Policies. These policy address school meals, nutri-tion education, physical activi-ty and other wellness activities in the school. One of the activities in the policy usually include healthy classroom celebrations and promoting nutritious foods during school hours. Limiting high sugar and high fat foods help to support the learning environment for students to learn. To help parents, educators and families, here are some great tips to team up with the school to provide healthier school celebrations: • Scavenger hunts • Extra Recess Time • Craft Stations • ZUMBA hour • Special party games • Dance PartyOther ways to make celebrat-ing healthier, is limiting the number of parties to one per month and no more than one junk food item. For more tips on healthy classroom celebra-tions look up the website: http://www.cspinet.org/nutri-

tionpolicy/policy_op-tions_healthycelebrations.html. Parents & educators take time to request a copy of you Local School Wellness Policy and for more information or resources you can contact myself at [email protected].

• Fruit Smoothies• Trail Mix• Fruit kabobs• Yogurt Parfaits• Angel food cake with fresh fruit topping• air-popped popcorn• low-fat pudding• applesauce or fruit cups• raw veggies with low-fat dip• berries with low-fat whipped topping• bananas or strawber-ries with chocolate syrup as dip

• graham crackers with jam or peanut butter• fresh apple slices with caramel or yogurt dip• have parent bring one type of fruits and kids can make own fruit salad• raisins or dried fruit• whole grain tortilla chips and fresh salsa• whole grain crackers and reduced-fat cheese

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Page 3

The Health Promotion (HP) Program primarily focuses on decreasing childhood obesity through promoting healthy eating and physical activity. In order to have inluence on the youth and make change, our program also provides oppor-tunities for their parents. According to an article by Duke Medicine (2013) it states “Kids whose moms encourage them to exercise and eat well, and model those healthy behaviors themselves, are more likely to be active and healthy eaters, according to researchers at Duke Medicine.” In support of this change, the HP program has been coordinating adult co-ed leagues to provide oppro-tunites for adults to be physi-

cally activty and to support their efforts to participate in healthy behaviors. Hence, the Health Promotion Program is currently taking registration for our Spring Adult Co-Ed Leagues. The Departmental league will start Tuesday March 3rd, and the last day to register is February 17, 2015. There is a 12 team max to enter on a irst come, irst serve basis with a 10 player roster. The Co-Ed Volleyball league will start March 2, 2015 and the last day to register is February 20th. The cost of the league is $20 per person and can consist of 10 player max roster. This league has two divisions, a Gold (Competitive) and Blue

(Non-Competitive) league. The gold league will have a max of 16 teams and the blue league will have a max of 8 teams to register and will be on a irst come, irst serve basis. For more information regard-ing the adult leagues, feel free to contact Gwendelyn Riggs at 928-283-1420 ext. 20702 or email [email protected].
