CLUB GALLEY!

I hope you were lucky enough to attend our annual Tropical Party in August, Aeolian Yacht Club really excelled. We hosted Point San Pablo Yacht Club, and many first-time guests. Two members volunteered to cook an authentic Cuban dinner and a fantastic outdoor party evolved from there. Live music by Mambo Soul had the dance floor full with over 100 guests in attendance. A giant thank you to Lizbeth Fuentes Rosner and Steven Schectman for sharing your expertise in Cuban cuisine and mojitos. They shared four days in the galley with many volunteers; special thanks to Jim LaMar, Eva Johnson, Betty, Laura Crawford, and Sharron Stemler. The Events Committee did their magic setting up, Ty Burkhart led the lighting crew, and Susan Jeffries has truly mastered her tropical flower arrangements. She also donated her supply ex-
penses to The Club. The bar team was spot on. I must admit, the only complaint I heard repeatedly was that we did not charge enough for such an incredible evening. Wow, I’ll take that to the complaint department any day!
Have you noticed that we have a second blue canopy/sun shade out on the back deck? Special thanks goes to our Rear Com-modore Richard Lee Smith and Diana Surber for this personal donation to the Club.
We are still recruiting for Vice Commodore and Recording Secretary for next year’s slate of officers. We have a terrific Events Committee and bar team to support the VC position. The Recording Secretary attends the monthly Board Meeting and records the minutes. Please consider these volunteer opportunities and contact me directly. I am also looking for more vol-unteers to join the Aeolian historical preservation efforts; we have some great slides to utilize.
We had no expressed interest in the unclaimed outboard motors. We offered these via a silent auction to members, so now they are for sale to the general public. September proves to be a great time to enjoy the bay, the fishing looks sensational, and there is plenty of nice weather yet to enjoy. See you at the Club!
Commodore - Linda KiblerAt the August Board meeting we welcomed Ken and Candace as members in good standing. They were having a family outing and were unable to collect their membership cards, keys and burgee. We will take care of this upon their return from the family waterskiing vacation. Please welcome these new members with the Aeolian Smile.
Ernie Koepf and Jan Moestine submitted a Membership application. They are proposed by Jack Sherwood and William Burkhart. They live in Oakland, they own a sailboat, and are looking for club berthing. They
use their boat for fishing and pleasure. Ernie is retired from Harbor Patrol, San Mateo County. Jan has her own business, “Passion enhancer.” Sounds interesting! They will attend work and club parties as well as membership meetings. Ernie claims a knowledge of all boat systems and is a carpenter. Their application will be posted on the downstairs wall for member input.

All Members are encouraged to attend Boat Owners Received Letters...If you have a boat in the harbor, you may have received a letter regarding infractions to your Aeolian Berthing Agree-ment or missing vessel documentation. I thank many of you for immediately responding. If you did not receive a letter, you are exceptional and very much appreciated. Please make sure we have your current emergency phone number on file.
I received a few calls expressing concern that you were being picked on. Trust me, you were not singled out: you and 48 other boat owners received letters. The most common issue is that an annual copy of your registration or USCG documentation should be on file. Many boat owners send us a photocopy of their registration sticker, but not the actual registration. You are also required to attach the sticker to your vessel. I am pleased to say that many of you have your insurance companies send us your renewal updates, and still appropriately follow up.
Remember, we are a volunteer club. Please don’t wait to be asked; be part of the solution, and be diligent in providing your documents annually to the Port Captain and office. Refer to your Berthing Agreement requirements. I want to thank the team of volunteers who spent hours walking the docks, screening each vessel file, filling out letters with me, in order to get these friendly reminders mailed out to you.

Rear Commodore- Richard Lee SmithThank you everyone for doing a great job with the recycling! Our challenge now is to get rid of the extra cardboard, bottles and cans so it doesn’t build up. The labelled gray bins were repositioned over by the dumpster but somehow they keep wandering back to the Clubhouse! Mike Baldwin and I are taking away the extra to a local recycling station so please make sure that there’s no garbage mixed in because we have to transport and handle. Thank you also to the angels who have washed out the green organics containers because they can get nasty. I will try and make sure they have been dumped into the large green rolling bin
on Monday afternoon for the pickup on Tuesday.
The soda machine was cranky for a few days this month and I fixed it by unplugging it and then plugging it back in. You can do it too! The dishwasher is often left with standing water in it and a full rack of dishes. I’ll check this also on Monday after-noons but it would be great if I didn’t have to.
We have had some large groups rent the clubhouse lately which is great for our financial picture. The sponsoring club mem-ber is responsible for leaving the property in good shape. It might be necessary to bag the additional recycling and take it off site. And remember that every event must be applied for and approved and outside alcohol is prohibited!
One more comment and then I’ll stop. The garbage dumpster is for waste generated on the property. I’m pretty sure that none of the boats in the harbor had renovations done that resulted in a mirrored sliding closet door needing to be thrown away.
September 5th is our next work party. I’ll be on vacation but I’m sure Paul Turner will have some projects that will need your help. Mahalo!

Our lovely club has been the place to be this summer and it’s been bustling with parties and fun activi-ties. Our second Friday bingo nights have been lots of fun with chili dog dinners, and we will continue that. Third Friday jam night and our third Sunday breakfasts are now well established and increasingly popular. Thanks so much to our terrific volunteer team of Eva Johnson, Jim Lamar, Adair Jorgensen, Shirley Ross, Betty, Laura Crawford, Linda Kibler, Sharron Stemler, Diana Surber, and Kathy Boothby.
The Tropical Party was a huge team effort and very successful. Boundless thanks to Liz and Steven Schectman for their heroic work to share Liz’s traditional Cuban food. A lot of planning, care, and love went into this endeavor and our guests really appreciated learning more about the tastes and traditions of Cuba. Our band Mambo Soul brought us island tunes and got the crowd on their feet. People have asked about them and their website (MamboSoulMu-sic.com) is very informative with music videos. They play a wide range of music (with a range of volumes). Our incredible team of Linda Kibler, Eva Johnson, Sharron Stemler, Jim Lamar, Shirley Ross, Betty, Susan Jeffries, George Fitzgerald, Rick Zarlow and Laura Crawford did an amazing job assisting Liz and Steven with galley prep, cooking, and décor. The club looked fantastic in tropical style! Bartenders Kathie Boothby, Paul Cahalen, Jacqueline Gottlieb, and Michael Biczynski did a great job keeping the fabulous mojitos flowing. Thanks so much! We enjoyed hosting the cruise from Point San Pablo, and we welcome other clubs.
In September we have our General meeting after the Board meeting on September 8. There are still some critical vacancies on the upcoming Board, so please consider what you can do for your club. We run on volunteer effort and we really need more support to avoid burning out our Faithful Few, especially bartenders. It is actually fun to contribute!

On Sunday September 25 we will again welcome a large cruise of eight boats from Ebony Boat Club with a Sunday BBQ hosted by Scott Saylor, Mari Miyaki and Shirley Ross. This is a lovely group that participates in the Wheelchair Regatta, and we are happy to support them. From October 14-16 we have Spinnaker YC cruising in, and possibly a larger group. We may plan another concert to fin-ish the season. Keep posted, watch your blast, and see the events calendar in this month’s JIB for more information!
In my last three months since taking over as Port Captain, the marina has continued to function normally. With the help of Steven Kibler, Tom Charon, and Kim Arrivee on the Harbor Com-mittee we are getting our record-keeping straight-ened out.
If you received a Notice of missing or out-of-date documentation from our Commodore Linda Kibler, please follow up and provide the necessary documentation.
No one has entered a bid on any of the outboard motors that are up for auction. If that continues to be the case, we will sell them on Craigslist next month. There is also a 7.5 KW Onan genset that has been sitting up in the shop area for around a year. We do not know who it belongs to. If no one claims it, we will put it up for auction to club members and then sell it on Craigslist if there is no interest.
We also need the membership’s help in identifying the rigging and other hardware that is in the overhead storage in the shop.
On a different note, we deployed three green channel markers re-cently and plan to add two red channel markers and relocate one of the existing ones. Following that, we will replace the PVC markers on the Bay side of the bridge.

successfully set on July 22nd.

Fishing Report - J.T. GardnerAugust continued to offer great angling opportunities in our local wa-ters. Salmon fishing was steady to exceptional. Fog has been a mixed bag, reducing visibility at times, but providing lower light levels that provide for better fishing conditions. As is normally the case in late summer, stripe bass have started to show up in the South Bay, follow-ing the abundant schools of anchovies. On a recent trip Brian Aylen and I enjoyed plenty of stripe bass action while fishing not more than
10 minutes from our harbor.
Looking ahead, the fall is arguably the best fishing time of the year (with Spring being a close second), and it is just around the corner. With the shorter days, the strong summer winds will diminish, and salmon and bass start their annual spawning migrations, which combine to provide optimal fishing conditions. Hope to see you on the water!

Next Book Club Meeting:
September 29th, 7pm at the ClubThe Milagro Beanfield War
by John Nichols
“Joe Mondragon, a feisty hustler with a talent for trouble, slammed his battered pickup to a stop, tugged on his gumboots, and marched into the arid patch of ground. Carefully (and also illegally), he tapped into the main irrigation channel. And so be-gan-though few knew it at the time-the Milagro beanfield war. But like everything else in the dirt-poor town of Milagro, it would be a patchwork war, fought more by tactical retreats than by battlefield victories. Gradually, the small farmers and sheepmen begin to rally to Joe’s beanfield as the symbol of their lost rights and their lost lands. And downstate in the capital, the Anglo water barons and power brokers huddle in urgent conference, intent on destroying that symbol before it destroys their multimillion-dol-lar land-development schemes. The tale of Milagro’s rising is wildly comic and loving-ly tender, a vivid portrayal of a town that, half-stumbling and partly prodded, gropes its way toward its own stubborn salvation.”
