Our Grand Knight’s ReportMy Brother Knights,

The new year has started out with a verybusy schedule. The Installation of Officerstook place on July 13th, the budget is in theprocess of being completed, and dates havebeen locked in for many of our fund raising eventssuch as Forever Doo Wop on October 12th, ourMurder Mystery Dinner on January 18th & 19,and our Book Sale on date to be determined. Weare also working on some additions as well.

We have also been asked by the PTO to help outwith cooking the Hamburgers and Hot Dogs forthe Trunk and Treat event for the kids for Halloweenand also to man the beverage stand for the Parishpicnic.

The month of August will also be a very busy andexciting time as we have been selected this yearto host the 2nd and 3rd degree installations forthe whole district. Thankfully John Luse and KenHein have offered to chair those. But I will needall of your help to step forward and volunteer forthese events.

Which brings me to what I really want to talk aboutin this month’s article. As I looked for guidanceon how we were going to achieve success this yearand exceed our goals, I came back to thinking aboutthe Pillars on which the Knights of Columbus werebuilt – Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

My focus this year will be centered on the firsttwo – Charity & Unity.

Charity – as members of the Knights of Columbuswe recognize this as our mission and there is nothing

more rewarding than helping those in need.

Unity – as members of the Knights of Columbuswe know that there is nothing that we can’taccomplish together. So we need to stick togetherand support one another. Although we may notalways agree on things and there can be differences

of opinion, we do know that we can count oneach other to make life better for our parish andcommunity.

So this year, I am reaching out and asking all youto challenge yourself and get involved. All we askis a few hours of your time to chair a committeeor if not to at least volunteer for one if not moreof the many programs that we do throughout theyear.

We have a great group of brothers who are alwayswilling to jump right in but we can’t expect themto do it alone. There is no greater feeling thanknowing you actually had a part in changing thelife of a person in need.

In closing, I ask you to give what you can – thengive more. As Yoda said in the Star Wars movie

“DON”T TRY – DO” Let’s keep the momentum goingand stay on course.

Congratulationsto:

He has been a Knight for over 35 years. He is a Captain for ColumbusHOPE Foundation (Tootsie Rolls) and is can be found helping at mostall of our events. Geraldine, his wife, and he worked long hoursat many events, such as the DooWop Dinner Dance. When theyhandled the cleaning and even did the serving, we received acompliment from the Food Manager of the school, because they didsuch a great job. They also help at the Pancake Breakfast. They arean example of a Catholic family and a what a Knight and his wife cando. I’m awarding Bob and Geraldine Greenawalt as Family of theMonth

Usually, most newer Knights aren’t so involved in the council to receive majorrecognition. As Chairman for the Mystery Dinner he did a great job. His hardwork resulted in the great success of the event. He was also instrumental insecuring a car from Hadwin-White for our Golf Outing, He is an adorer, and hasmany ideas for fund raisers to help our council be more successful. I’m happy toname Henry Villegas our Knight of the Month.

Where do I begin? This Knight worksconstantly for our parish and ourcouncil. He works all of our food drivesand even built a mold so that we couldget an accurate count of the ViennaSausage cans..

He works most Tootsie Roll events andis a Captain for one of them. He deliversfor HELP4KIDS and will be working onTuesdays loading the vans for theWednesday runs.. He delivers food forthe needy program that several localchurches run. He and his wife areadorers and he cooks for our Pancake

Breakfasts.

He chaired last year’s Golf Tournament and when I askedhim to chair this year’s he replied with, “Do you want meto?” Obviously I did. I suspect if asked by the new GK hewill do it again.

My personal highest compliment to ANY man is prettysimple, and, trust me, I do not say it often. It is to say,“You’re a Good Man”. Vin Vecchio You Are a GOOD MANand I’m very proud to award you KNIGHT OF THE YEAR.

Our Family of the year had an interestingbeginning with me. I knew them but notvery well. After our first Doo Wop, thiswonderful lady came up to me and toldme that I had done something verywrong.. Many of you know how gently Ireact to criticism. She said I shouldn’t haveallowed cleanup to begin when the bandwas still playing and that it was rude to dothat. I immediately thought that she wasabsolutely right and we don’t do that anymore.

This couple works very hard for our counciland church. They can be found counting

money on Monday from the weekend collections. She also helpscoordinate the counting.

They manage the food for the Golf Tournament and helped withthe Mystery Dinner Food. These aren’t easy things. They’re agreat deal of work. As I spoke more often about him, I learnedabout events that they had done at their previous parish. Oneof those was a breakfast. He told me about it a few times andfinally I said, “ Will you chair it?’ And he said yes. He and his wifetook charge and have done a terrific job. We have a lot of fundoing it and we’re making money. They’re probably glad I'mdone because I had been speaking to them about anotherventure.

I’m very grateful to them and all of their work And I’m proud toaward Tom and JUDY Koppe Family of the Year.

Flag Folding Ceremony

The flag-folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which ourgreat country was originally founded.

The portion of the flag denoting honor is the canton of bluecontaining the stars representing states our veterans served inuniform. The canton field of blue dresses from left to right and isinverted only when draped as a pall on the casket of a veteran whohas served our country honorably in uniform. In the U.S. Armed Forces, at the ceremony of retreat, the flag islowered, folded in a triangle fold and kept under watch throughoutthe night as a tribute to our nation’s honored dead. The nextmorning it is brought out and, at the ceremony of reveille, run aloft

as a symbol of our belief in the resurrection of the body.At the request of Fr. Ed, the Sir Knights of Assembly 2107 put on a Flag Folding Ceremony after the6:00 PM Mass on Saturday, July 6. Present at the Flag Folding Ceremony were:Joe Wanovich; Guy Frattini; Jim Adee; Ron Bellonio; Larry Berry; Donald Maher; John KokoskaTony Carangelo; Gil Cushing; Larry Berry; John Averella.

Corps Commander Report for August- by Larry Berry

Faithful Sir Knights,I would like to begin by thanking our Past Faithful Navigator James Adee for his time, commitmentand energy during the last fraternal year. His efforts were outstanding and highly noted as he ledour Assembly. Thanks Jim for a great job. We had a request by Fr. Ed to perform a Flag Foldingdemonstration at the 6:00 PM Mass on July 6, 2019. I want to thank our Honor Guard Commander,Larry Berry and the members of the Flag folding team for a job well done. (Photos on pg. 7) As youknow, effective July 1st , we are unable to participate in any Color Corp Ceremonies due to the fact

we do not meet the uniform requirements.

Our Fiscal year has started off on a very positive note. Our Budget and Annual Dues discussed previously, hopefully, will be approved at our July meeting. I want to apologize for assuming that the Budget and Dues Increase wouldhave been approved at our June meeting. This will enable us to carry on our Assembly activity and meet ourfinancial responsibilities. The Assembly Trustees has completed our ending year audit and it has been submittedto Supreme. We will be working with our Accountant Barbara Auten to get our Taxes filed with the Internal Revenue

Service.

Our Assembly Installation and Dinner was very successful. Thanks to those who volunteered for set-up and helpedserving. I want to extend a big thank you to Ken Hein and Joann Cordell for an excellent dinner.

The next Fourth Degree exemplification is scheduled for September 28, 2019 at Nativity Catholic Church inCharleston, S.C. All 3rd Degree Knights will be notified and we will hold an information meeting for the purposeof growing the membership. Please encourage a 3 rd Degree Knight to join our Assembly.

I look forward to sponsoring the many programs such as Quilts of Valor, Military Chaplains andMilitary Seminarian Support Programs and others throughout the year. We will be passing thebucket around to collect for the Military Seminarian Support fund. Please be generous.

Let us remember to pray for our Country and Church:

Holy Family Pray for us. Our lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, pray for us. St. Joseph, patron saint of the Universal Church, pray for us. God Bless,

F/N , Assembly 2107

Saint Clare of Assisi repels the Saracen invaders

The History of Saint Clare, Virgin, tells of various miracles performed by Saint Clare.

There are episodes of multiplications of loaves and of bottlesof oil that appeared in the convent when there was nonebefore.

But Clare performed the most famous of the miracles in 1240on a Friday in September, in which she turned away an attackby Saracen (Muslim) soldiers who had broken into the conventcloister by showing them the Sacred Host.

This Eucharistic miracle is cited in The History of Saint Clare, Virgin, written by Tommaso da Celano, anddescribes how Saint Clare of Assisi succeeded, with the Blessed Sacrament, in turning away Saracen troops inthe pay of Emperor Frederick II of Sweden. Full bio of Frederick II at:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor

The history goes like this: “By imperial order, regiments of Saracen soldiers and bowmen were stationed there(the convent of San Damiano in Assisi, Italy), massed like bees, ready to devastate the encampments and seizethe cities. Once, during an enemy attack against Assisi, city beloved of the Lord, and while the army wasapproaching the gates, the fierce Saracens invaded San Damiano, entered the confines of the monastery andeven the very cloister of the virgins. The women swooned in terror, their voices trembling with fear as they criedto their Mother, Saint Clare.

“Saint Clare, with a fearless heart, commanded them to lead her, sick as she was, to the enemy, preceded by asilver and ivory case in which the Body of the Saint of saints (the Eucharist) was kept with great devotion. Andprostrating herself before the Lord, she spoke tearfully to her Christ: ‘Behold, my Lord, is it possible You wantto deliver into the hands of pagans Your defenseless handmaids, whom I have taught out of love for You? I prayYou, Lord, protect these Your handmaids whom I cannot now save by myself.’

Suddenly a voice like that of a child resounded in her ears from the tabernacle: ‘I will always protect you!’ ‘MyLord,’ she added, ‘if it is Your wish, protect also this city which is sustained by Your love.’ Christ replied, ‘It willhave to undergo trials, but it will be defended by My protection.’ Then the virgin, raising a face bathed in tears, comforted the sisters: ‘I assure you, daughters, that you will suffer no evil; only have faith in Christ.’ Upon seeingthe courage of the sisters, the Saracens took flight and fled back over the walls they had scaled, unnerved bythe strength of she who prayed. And Clare immediately admonished those who heard the voice I spoke of above, telling them severely: ‘Take care not to tell anyone about that voice while I am still alive, dearest daughters.’”

Saint Clare and the Assault on Assisi, Giuseppe Cesari (1568-1640).

The Monastery of San Damiano, Assisi, Italy.

Clare was canonized on 15 August 1255by Pope Alexander IV, and her feast daywas immediately inserted in the GeneralRoman Calendar for celebration on 12August, the day following her death, as11 August was already assigned to SaintsTiburtius and Susanna, two 3rd-centuryRoman martyrs.

Catholics around the world mark the Feast of the Assumptionof Mary, commemorating the end of her earthly life andassumption into Heaven. But while the feast day is a relativelynew one, the history of the holiday – and the mystery behind it– has its roots in the earliest centuries of Christian belief.

As her earthly life comes to an end, the Assumption helps us tounderstand more fully not just her life, but it helps us to alwaysfocus our gaze to Eternity. The dogma of the Assumption ofMary – also called the “Dormition of Mary” in the EasternChurches – has its roots in the early centuries of the Church. TheCatholic Church teaches that when Mary ended her earthly life,God assumed her, body and soul into heaven.
