Objectives of the day

• Outline promotion process highlighting dates of interest

• Summarize the partial flex model and its required and optional areas

• Highlight the standards for promotion based on specific rank (assistant associate etc)

• Basic structure for the application portfolio

• Do’s and Don’ts in the promotion process

Promotion from Instructor to Assistant Adjunct Professor

• Done Through the Department or Departments– Must have consensus amongst Chairs

• 2 Semesters of Service• 3 classes of effective teaching• Can be granted at any time in semester

– Applied to following contract • Adjunct fills out Assistant Professor Criteria Checklist• Adjunct submits 2 professional references: one from a

TCSPP faculty member

Flex Model Goals

• Aims to recognize differences across programs as well as the similarities across all faculty members’ jobs and responsibilities to The Chicago School.

• Strives to recognize acceptable, as well as exceptional, performance: not necessarily length of service

Faculty Development and Promotion Committee?

• FDPC reviews adjunct, and affiliate faculty promotion applications and makes recommendations to Department Chairs on promotion for Associate and Professor rank positions only.

• Rank may not carry over if hired full-time

Promotion Process

• Divided into Subcommittees

• Rubric to determine meets or does not meet standard

• Individual scoring and subcommittee meets to discuss

Notes About What to Include

• Calculate means for first 13 items from teaching evaluations• Copies of syllabi are not required, but may be included • CV publications and presentations must be listed in APA style

and clearly indicate publication status.• Student work samples (e.g., conference posters) may be noted

or cited, but need not be included in the application.• Include copies of publications if possible• List courses taught.• List dissertation and/or thesis activity (chair and reader)• Candidates’ own dissertations and/or theses should not be

included in the application.

Some Advice from FDPC

• Provide evidence!– Unsolicited emails, cards, letters– Highlight innovative teaching – Consult Appendix to Flex Model for suggestions

• Only provide evidence for optional areas you intend on highlighting for consideration

– Don’t thinly spread evidence across all optional areas.

• An organized portfolio is greatly appreciated!– Cover letter– Tabs
