Summer Sports Line By Pam Yerg

CYCLING CLUB Starts: July 10 Location: Bohrer Park Time: 9AM

New cycling program this year. Tra-ditional racing cycling for athletes wishing to compete in State Cycling Games scheduled for September 26th. We will also have a leisure club ride for athletes who simply want to “ride”. Ride locations to be deter-mined. Sign up required on line/mail. Choose Racing or Leisure. Both pro-grams require that you provide you own equipment and a Buddy/Unified Partner. Coach Renny plans to “ride” through October. Contact: Coach Renny Springuel at [email protected].

CROSS COUN-TRY RUNNING Starts: July 7 Location: Lake Needwood Time: 6 PM

Athletes wishing to participate in the Fall Cross Country Running Team should plan to attend the summer runs whenever possible. Coach SpongeBob will need the assistance of family members to help with chaper-one and leadership duties in this run-ning program. Sessions include in-struction on stretching and running techniques to prepare all athletes for competition in local, regional and state road races. Fall team practices will be on Sundays at Good Counsel High School beginning in late August. All athletes must sign up online or mail in the sign up form in this issue.

GOLF Starts: August 4 Location: Falls Rd Golf Course Time: 6:00 PM Our SOMO Golf Team features training

in levels 1-4. All athletes must begin at level 1(skills) and compete and be assessed through state sanctioned competition with a qualifying score before moving to level 2 (9 holes, every other ball with a Unified Part-ner). All athletes are required to have a Unified Partner train and compete with them. We train mid-week begin-ning August 4th and attend travel competitions on weekends through the season in preparation for the state games on Sept 25-27th. Team is full. If you are interested in being added to our wait list, please sign up on-line or the mail in sign-up Contact: Head Coach Chuck Hellmuth at [email protected]

TENNIS Starts: Aug 22 Location: Walter Johnson High School Time: 4 PM

We will limit the skills program to 30 slots and offer Beginning, Intermedi-ate and Advanced Skills training. The goal is to ready the tennis athlete to advance to level 2: Mixed doubles tennis with a Unified Partner or Tra-ditional Mixed Doubles ( 4 S.O. ath-letes). The first two practices in Au-gust will be assessment to determine the athlete's level of play. In Septem-ber, Skills athletes meet at 3:45 and will practice from 4-5:00. Mixed Dou-

bles athletes practice 4-6:00. We are very fortunate to have MCTA ( Mont-gomery County Tennis Association) as our partners. These skilled players prepare our athletes for competition as well as a life-long love of tennis! Head Coach: Greg Overkamp, MCTA League Coordinator Email Pam Yerg with questions about the program: [email protected]

SAILING and KAYAKING The Mid-Summer Classic State Com-petition will be held July 31 & Aug 1at

The 2010 Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games, held June 11-13 at Towson University, marked the 40th anniversary of Maryland Special Olym-pics. Athletes whose performances earned them gold, silver or bronze were fortunate to be awarded beauti-ful commemorative medals. Friday evening’s opening ceremonies were preceded by a boisterous block party, with plenty of arcade games and a special appearance by Baltimore Ra-vens quarterback Joe Flacco. Athletes and coaches with ornate balloon hats and arcade prizes filed into Towson Center for the ceremonies. The SOMD Summer Games were

the newly renovated soccer field adjacent to the stadium, which pro-vided excellent playing conditions for the athletes. Led by head coach Renny Springuel, recently named to the coaching staff for the 2011 World Games, Team SOMO bowled its way to many medals. The SOMO Sharks once again dominated the pool at Burdick Hall. Our swimmers athletes earned a whopping 73 med-als on Saturday alone! held at venues throughout the Tow-son campus. At Johnny Unitas Sta-dium, the delegations and spectators were treated to two days of exciting track and field competition. Races, varying in distance from 25 meters to 5000 meters, took place on the track while athletes competed on the field in standing and running long jump, shot put, and the softball and “turbo-jav” throws. Athletes and coaches alike escaped the heat of the track by taking breaks under the cooling spray mist provided by a fire truck at one end of the stadium. The bocce team enjoyed two beauti-ful days of successful competition on
