and related aids and services that are designed to meet their individual needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students.

Adult Basic EducationENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE/CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION

These are classes for people who speak other languages but who want to learn to speak, read, and write in English. They also will enable students to complete requirements for permanent residency and/or citizenship. These classes will emphasize conversation, Civics (U.S. History and Government), reading and writing. They will be offered at six different ability levels. Levels Beginning Low and Beginning High emphasize conversation. Levels Intermediate Low and Intermediate High offer Civics, reading and writing, along with conversation. Levels Advanced Low and Advanced High are primarily Civics along with more advanced reading and writing. Students may enroll in the classes at any time either by going to one of the adult school offices or by going directly to any of the classes and speaking to the teacher. There is no charge for tuition, registration, books or materials. Students attending these classes will be able to be better consumers, workers, parents, etc. In many cases, they are able to find jobs because their English has improved. Some students use the classes as the first step towards a high school diploma or even entrance to college. Students may move from one level to another during the same year. Free child care is provided in the day classes for the pre-school children of the students.

On the Job TrainingThis program provides participants with employment

training in the private sector. Participants are generally semi-skilled and are placed in positions that are heavily in demand in the San Gabriel Valley and/or Los Angeles area. While participants must be residents of the Consortium’s service area, which includes the cities of Alhambra, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Montebello, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel and Temple City, the location of the employer may extend beyond the Consortium’s eight-city jurisdiction. The Consortium, however, does attempt to place participants with employers who are conveniently located to the participants residence. For information please call the West San Gabriel Valley Consortium at (626) 572-7272.
