Highway CleanupOctober 26, 2013. (Saturday) - 13 people participated. On a nice, sunny October day, we assembled at Skibowl’s parking lot. Unfortunately, we forgot to take a group picture there, so all we have is a few photos taken later. We split up into groups of 3 or 4, and each group covered just half a mile, on our 2-mile stretch of Highway 26, just west of Government Camp, from milepost 51 to 53. We picked up 26 bags of trash thrown away by people tavelling the highway. After two hours of work, we assembled for lunch at Charlie’s Mountainview Pub.

Warren Miller movie/dinnerOct. 25 (Friday). A big thanks to Sandra Smith for organizing another splendid club gathering. She purchased group discounted tickets for 74 people. First, we met for dinner and/or drinks at the Silver Spoon Bistro, a couple of blocks from the theater, and two hours later, we watched the premier of the latest film: “Ticket to Ride”.

The movie seems totally mis-named, as there were no lifts or lift tickets in it. In fact, practically no regular ski areas either. The movie focuses al-most entirely on back-country skiing in far away places, such as Alaska (Tordrillo and Valdez), Montana, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Swiss Alps (Jungfrau region), and Kazakh-stan. Access to the terrain is mainly by helicopter or by hiking, or sometimes by boat and hiking, as in the fjords of Norway and in Greenland.

Aspen is the only resort included, but the scenes filmed there only show terrain park acrobatics. The Aspen slopes outside of the terrain park are not shown.

The film’s name is justified by a somewhat humorous skit in which Colby West climbs a hill and finds a wise sensei (master), who gives him a shining box containing the “ticket to ride”, but then warns him that ninjas will seek to destroy whoever holds this ticket. It sounds like a setup for a thread that might run through the whole movie. But, no, there is no follow-up to that.

The only little bit of humor is contained in a short 2 or 3 minute collage of old footage from the original Warren Miller films, showing Warren himself.

Overall, the movie is quite pleasing to watch, because of the beautiful scenery, and some very pretty young women athletes, and for the ladies, some semi-naked young guys -- all accomplished Olympic skiers and snowboarders, of course.

The music is good, though a bit too loud in places.

Relatively new sport shown: speed skiing with a parachute, a combina-tion of paragliding and skiing.

We’ll have a few copies of this movie to give away at our Kickoff Party.

Skiing North Americawith

John & Jewel Andrewby Emilio Trampuz

In the October issue, we started a series of articles about the adventures of John and Jewel Andrew who had decided to spend their retirement years skiing all of North America.

Note also that an introductory article about Skiing North America appears in the latest 2013/2014 issue of the NW Skiers’ Directory, which will be available for free at the upcoming Ski Fever Show, the Ski Fair, and at various ski and sports stores around town.

Keeping a listThis is a major challenge. New ski areas open from time to time - such as Tamarack (Idaho) and Revel-stoke (B.C.), while other ski areas close. Some smaller ski areas don’t even appear on any lists.

So, it’s hard to come up with a defini-tive list and a specific total number. All totaled, the list John and Jewel have assembled contains 747 ski areas, but 63 of them (mainly small ones) have closed or are private, which leaves 684 ski areas in North America (Canada + U.S.).

So far, John and Jewel have skied 519 of them.

Interestingly, the November 2013 issue of Ski Magazine states on page 18 that there are currently 477 ski areas in the United States. This means that John and Jewel have already visited way more ski areas than the total existing in the U.S.

John says: Jewel and I had done only 25 ski areas before we retired (17 years ago). I think that skiing all of them is possible only in retirement, because of the distances and time spent travelling.

I started by buying the “White Book of Ski Areas” and “The Peak Ski Guide and Travel Planner.” The two books were about 95% in agreement. When I began travelling, I found a good many ski areas had closed that were listed in the two books. However, I found other ski areas that were not listed by them. That’s when I began to make my own list. For instance, neither book listed the private ski

areas. I have found 17. Most of them will allow a person to ski. I also found resorts like Blizzard that don’t make it to anyone’s list.

I used to think that the only way to get a complete listing might be to check with the lift inspectors in each state or province because they inspect installations. Then I was told that in some places the inspections are done locally or not at all, Quebec being an example. That’s when I realized that there’s almost no way to get a perfect list of all the ski areas in North America. The last 5%, the little ones, will always be elusive.

Incidentally, when I find a ski area that’s closed perma-nently, I’ll climb it, take a run, and check it off my list. Most of these are under 600 feet. If people are around, I’ll ask permission.

One thing that’s almost constant is the total advertised vertical is just under 700,000 feet. It doesn’t matter if you take out the closed areas or leave them in. If you divide that number by 5,280, you get about 130 miles. Thus, if you stacked all the ski areas on top of one another, you’d have a mountain 130 miles high. Of course, we all ski much more than one run. With our rule of thumb, “one day per thousand feet of vertical,” we get lots of runs at the big ski areas on multiple days, probably millions of vertical feet and hundreds of vertical miles, we don’t keep track.

You too can embark on a similar adventure. If all of North America sounds like too much, set yourself a more modest goal. How about taking on the Northwest Ski Challenge to ski at least 7 Northwest ski areas in a single winter season. You can win a prize for that!

For a more ambitious goal, notice that there are 154 ski areas listed in the Western part of North America (including British Columbia and Alberta). You can see them all listed at: www.mthigh.org/SkiAreas.htm. How about skiing all of those in your lifetime?

On our web site, you can find a modified form of John and Jewel’s spreadsheet with 3 added columns. One shows that Emilio has skied 99 ski areas. You might not beat John & Jewel, but surely you can beat Emilio! The other two columns are for Persons A and B. Make those your own and start entering a “1” for every ski area visited. See: www.mthigh.org/Documents/North-American-Ski-Areas-2013-09-15.xls

You Are Invited! - Colleen HankinsFor nearly 30 years PACRAT Racing (Pacific Northwest Area Clubs Recreational Alpine Teams) has offered adult ski club members an exciting and fun opportunity to participate in recreational alpine racing on Mt. Hood. While some PACRATers have raced for years, many of our members have joined PACRAT as beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.

If you are looking for team camaraderie and friendly fun competition - we are the league for you!. Many racers join primarily for the social aspect and throw in some racing! Each PACRAT team consists of 10 racers and

each racer is handicapped after the first race and placed into one of 7 skill levels ranging from novice to elite based on individual time. All racers are also dual-scored under the NASTAR scoring system, so you can see how you compare on the NATIONAL level too! All racers who qualify may attend the NASTAR National Championships. To join a team, the only requirements are to be 18, a member of a NWSCC club, and to pay race fees of $95 for the season. Dues include your bib, 5 races, discounted race day lift tickets, après ski parties with door prizes and refreshments, pins for placement in your categories, NASTAR standings and pins, and an end-of-season “Rat Attack” Awards Party. This is the best “bang for your buck” entertainment value on the mountain!!! Check us out at www.PACRATs.org for race dates and sign-up instructions.

Whistler Cabin TripJan. 19-25, 2014. This annual trip to a cabin just 5 min-utes from Whistler village attracts people from several local ski clubs and it usually fills up quickly, because it can only accommodate about a dozen people. But two couples who had originally signed up have family doings at the time of the trip. So, there are now two double beds open. Hope to fill with some couples. $290 a person. Includes lodging for a week. Lift tickets not included. Contact Bill Leeper, [email protected]

New bus service to Mt. HoodA new Mountain Ex-press bus service will operate six to eight runs a day, year-round except for Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas, between Sandy and

Mount Hood, stopping at Skibowl, Government Camp, and Timberline. Fare is $2 one way, or a book of 20 rides brings the price down to $1.50. That’s less than you’d spend on gas!

The service has already started, as of October 1, 2013. Three additional trips will be added during the winter season, December 1 - March 31. The best time for us is:

1. Leave Sandy Transit Center at 7:55 am, arrive at Skibowl West at 8:32 am, arrive at Timberline at 9:00 am.

2. Depart from Timberline at 2:45 pm or 4:45 pm. arrive in Sandy at 3:50 or 5:50 pm.

How Steep is this Slope? An inclinometer is a device that measures the angle of inclination – in this case the steepness of a slope.

That’s Doug Pilcher in the photo, warming up for a PACRAT race.

A very simple inclinometer is printed on a sticker and wrapped around a ski pole.

The photo illustrates how a mea-surement is taken by eyeballing the side of the slope against the lines on the inclinometer. This slope is approximately 26 degrees (give or take one or two degrees).

Anyone attending the Ski Fair (Nov. 18) or our Kickoff Party (Nov. 20) will be able to get one of these.

We will also produce a customized version just for Bruce Kuper, an inclinometer that measures beyond 60 degrees - the Bruce Zone!

Idaho Panhandle bus trip

Jan. 27 - Feb. 1, 2014. 6 days/ 5 nights / 5 days skiing.

We’ll ski and stay at Schweitzer Mt. for 3 days and nights to make use of the 3 free lift tickets with the Fu-sion Pass/ Powder Alliance deal. It’s OK if you don’t have the Fusion Pass; you’ll just have to pay a bit more.

Schweitzer Mt. is one of the few places in the US of-fering true ski-in/ski-out, and great powder. Schweitzer Mt. is known for its powder, glade skiing, long cruisers, snow ghosts and fantastic views of Lake Pend Oreille.

Also, you can learn about the legend of Phineas Sch-weitzer, hear his ghost, and see some of his inventions, such as the 6-pack chairlift and the fog-o-meter!

Then we’ll move to Kellogg, Idaho, where we will stay for 2 nights near the bottom of the gondola to Silver Mt.

On the first day there, we’ll have our bus take us about 25 minutes east to Lookout Pass ski area on the Montana border. This is Idaho’s number 1 powder place. It gets significantly more snow than Schweitzer Mt.

At Lookout Pass, you can ski the Idaho side, the Mon-tana side, and the North side. At lunch, notice that the day lodge is built right on the State line, and you can have lunch in the Montana dining room or in the Idaho dining room.

TRIPSHere are the ski trips planned for this season. Also, see more details on our web site, on the TRIPS page.

Note that all 3 Mt. High trips will be bus trips. Notice the bus symbol on the right side of the trip headline.

When planning your trip(s), remember the Fusion Pass/Powder Alliance deal can save you $180 on the Idaho trip, and $50 on the Leavenworth trip.

Mt.High On the last day of the trip, we will ski at Silver Moun-tain, just a gondola ride above our lodgings. Silver Mt. has opened two new trails recently. Last winter, they opened the “Bootlegger” trail. This year, a new trail has been added named “Shady Lady” and the challenge will be to find where it is.

We’ll have to stop skiing shortly after lunch ... or maybe you can skip lunch and keep on skiing. We need to leave early because we’ll have a long drive home.

Our bus will leave Kellogg around 2 pm, and we should be back in Portland some time shortly after 9 pm on Saturday night. Then you’ll have all of Sunday to rest and recover from the trip.

The price covers lodging, skiing, and bus transporta-tion, as well as at least one dinner. Regular = $875. Senior (65+) = $835. If you have a Fusion Pass, you can save a lot on this trip thanks to the Powder Alliance deal. Regular with Fusion pass = $695. Miscellaneous

June Mt. ReopensJune Mountain, which is owned by Mammoth, will reopen after a year’s hiatus from operations. The initial closing in 2012 shocked many of the townspeople of June Lake, Calif., who rely heavily upon the skier-snowboarder business at the mountain.

After a year of work on the hill, Mammoth officials announced the reopening of June Mountain this summer, with new Chair 1, more snowmaking and a greater emphasis on families and beginners.

Breckenridge ExpandsBreckenridge (CO) has added 500 acres to its terrain on Peak 6, with two intermediate-level alpine bowls, and 10 new trails.
