The first release in the Wildlife in Need series is the Giant Panda. The Giant Panda is a peaceful, bamboo-eating member of the bear family native to China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Known for its solitary nature, the Giant Panda has an acute sense of smell and can grow up to five feet in height. They have steadily lost their forest habitat to China’s expanding human population. These striking animals are now confined to fragmented forest patches high in the mountains of south western China. The first release in this outstanding series honours theAustralian diggers of the First World War.

The Gallipoli or Dardanelles Campaign took place inthe Ottoman Empire between April 1915 and

January 1916. The operations consisted of a jointBritish and French mission to capture thecapital of Istanbul and secure a sea route toRussia.

On 25 April, at approximately 4.15am on astill spring night, with the sea mist rising, members of the Australian Imperial Force(AIF) landed at Gallipoli together with troopsfrom New Zealand, Britain, and France. It was

shortly after this landing that the highcommand realised that the men had

disembarked in the wrong position. Instead offacing the friendly

topography south of AnzacCove, they faced the

precipitous area of the north.

Inhospitable terrain, miserableconditions and horrendous casualties werecharacteristic of the campaign, whichended with the withdrawal of alliedtroops. For the Turkish people, Gallipoliwas a defining moment in their history.Likewise, the Gallipoli campaignresonated profoundly among Australians. The campaign marked the first majorbattle undertaken by the Australian andNew Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC)and is considered a landmarkin the development of theAustralian identity.

Anzac Day, April 25,remains a deeply significantcommemoration, honouringthe military service, suffering and sacrifice ofthose involved.

Upon the death of King George VI in 1952 Queen Elizabeth II became ruler of theBritish Empire. Her Coronation was in June 1953 and newcoins were designed and issued for Australia. In addition tothe regular circulating coins a tiny number of Proofs werestruck. There are no original records that I know of but it isgenerally considered that the mintage was just over 10 pieces. The 1953 Proofs are of particular importance as they are thefirst year of issue for the new coin types of Elizabeth II.We have only been able to trace one other example ofthis coin offered in the fifteen years which attests to itsgreat rarity. The second coin in the series commemorates the Lost Soldiers of Fromelles. Known asAustralia’s bloodiest day, during the 1916 Battle of Fromelles the 5th Division suffered5533 casualties. There was speculation for many years regarding the existence of anunmarked and forgotten mass grave near Fromelles, containing the remains of Alliedsoldiers killed during the battle and subsequently buried by the Germans. The 20Cent coin design is based on the Cobbers Statue which stands in Fromelles. Presentedin an illustrated holder.

The Australia Remembers series recognises those who made history beyond thebattlefields. In 2011 it celebrates Australian war correspondents that have shaped ourperception of conflicts since the Boer War.C.E.W. Bean, chronicler of Gallipoli and founder of theAustralian War Memorial; and Damien Parer, whosememorable images from the Kokoda trackpreceded his death in the line of duty; exemplifyan honourable occupation distinguished bybravery and integrity.

Based on an image from the Australian WarMemorial of an Australian official photographer, standing with tripod and camera on a BritishMark V tank, the advance of Australian troopsthrough the Hindenburg Line is recorded.

The coin is presented in the same card format as theAustralian Service Nurses and Lost Soldiers of Fromelles coins. There is a brief description of the work done by these brave Australians and thecontribution they made to Australian war history on the card.
