ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — Allies of the man who the international community says won Ivory Coast’s dis-puted presidential election called Sunday for a general strike that would last until the incumbent hanging on to power concedes defeat and leaves office.

It was the latest form of pressure to try to force Laurent Gbagbo from the presidency nearly a month after the United Nations said his political rival, Alassane Ouattara, won the runoff vote. Gbagbo has refused to leave despite international calls for his

ouster, and West African leaders say they now will remove him by force if he fails to go.

In an interview with Associated Press Televi-sion News on Sunday, Gbagbo said he was not concerned about world opinion, insisting he was duly elected. He said of his detractors: “Maybe they do not want me, I admit it, but I am not looking to be loved by them. I respect and abide by the Ivorians’ vote.”

Djedje Mady, the head of Ouattara’s electoral coalition, said it called

on “all Ivorians and those who live in Ivory Coast and believe in peace and justice to cease all their activities on Monday, December 27, 2010, until Laurent Gbagbo leaves power.”

The U.N. has said at least 173 people have been killed in violence over the vote, heightening fears that the country once divided in two could return to civil war. The toll is believed to be much higher, though, as the U.N. mission has been blocked from investigating other reports, including an allegation of a mass grave.

Here are food service establish-ments recently inspected by the Calhoun County Health Depart-ment, along with scores. A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no deficiencies. Potential-ly hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway. Res-taurants earning below 70 must raise their scores within seven days or face closure.

those duties through-out Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, when she’s also in and out of the courtroom, helping Colvin with paperwork and infor-mation he needs during his hearings.

“It’s crazy,” Warren said. “Everything stops on my desk, but I like my job.”

A workweek for Clark involves much of the same: Between dealing with law-yers, their clients and clerks in person, Clark helps pre-pare information on defen-dants in small claims court on Mondays, traffic court on Wednesdays and Fridays, and district civil court on Thursdays.

“I just keep the files mov-ing,” she said.

That may seem relative-ly simple, but the judicial assistants point out that if they weren’t there to man-age files, answer calls and act as liaisons between their judges and other officials, the district hearings that determine the preliminary outcomes of cases would simply stop.

And that means activity in circuit courtrooms would stop; the defendants sent to them by district court wouldn’t move up to circuit court, because those case files wouldn’t be moving.

In effect, the court system

would be seriously compro-mised without Clark and Warren as judicial assistants in district court.

“People are steadily coming through our doors,” Warren said.

Clark agreed.“And we’re especially

busy at the end of the year with people who want to speak to the judge before the holidays,” she said.

The “especially busy” year-end is especially nerve-wracking for Clark and War-ren this time around. That’s because both of their judges are retiring.

For Clark, Larry War-ren’s impending retire-ment means she’ll have to get used to working under judge-elect Beth Rog-ers, the Republican voters chose to succeed the man who’s served 24 years on the bench.

Melodie Warren’s future is more uncertain; Colvin only recently announced he’d be retiring come Jan. 18.

Judicial assistants aren’t protected by civil service regulations; they’re what court officials call “confi-dential employees,” mean-ing that when a judge retires or is voted out of office, the incoming judge can either choose to dismiss or keep the preceding judge’s judi-cial assistant.

Warren said she hopes whoever Gov.-elect Robert Bentley appoints to take

Colvin’s place will choose to keep her on staff.

“I want to work; I need to work,” she said. “But if who-ever they appoint doesn’t (elect to keep me on staff ), it will be OK.”

Warren said she’s had 10 years to prepare herself for the day that Colvin would retire or lose an election.

The judge announced his January retirement earlier this month, but Warren said Colvin informed her of his decision a couple months in advance.

If the judge who’s appointed to take Colvin’s place in January chooses to keep Warren as the judicial assistant, she said she’ll have to help that person learn how to run the always-busy district criminal courts.

“It’s going to be inter-esting — there are so many little avenues and so much information they will have to know and learn,” she said.

Clark said she’s “loved working with” Judge Warren but is anxious for Rogers to take office so the two can begin working to make the transition “a smooth one.”

“The great thing about Beth (Rogers) is she’s really ready to work,” Clark said. “At first I do feel like she’s going to be relying on me, and I’m going to do all I can to help her as much as I can.”

“They like the push-to-talk feature,” McGrew said.

Besides offering Sprint Nextel prod-ucts and accessories, the Oxford store also provides full phone service.

“Any issues with the phones, we can work on them in the store,” Wilson said.

Atlanta-based national telecommuni-cations expert Jeff Kagan said Sprint lost ground to AT&T and Verizon a few years ago after the company switched CEOs and purchased Nextel.

“Depending on where you were, some

people complained about quality and dropped calls while some complained about customer service,” Kagan said.

In the past year, however, Sprint has gained some of that ground back, Kagan said.

“They are starting to recover,” he said. “They were in a crash dive and now they are pulling up. The problems they had they are solving.”

He said he expected more success for Sprint in the future.

“Over the course of the next year or two, if they continue with improvements, I see them as being very successful,” Kagan said.
