End of the lineThis is our final issue of MMQ for 2011By Eric LuskEditor

Football season is still alive for one area high school team, West Stokes.

The Wildcats won a thriller Fri-day night in the second round of the 2AA playoffs, rallying late for a 47-42 victory over visiting Cuthbertson. The most successful season in West Stokes’ history – the ’Cats are now 13-0 – will get to continue for at least one more week.

Of the 17 schools that play football in the Northwest 1A/2A and Moun-tain Valley 1A/2A conferences, West is the last team standing. The other four teams which had advanced to Fri-day’s second round – Starmount, Wil-kes Central, West Wilkes and South Stokes – all were ousted by playoff foes.

While West Stokes will get ready for this Friday’s duel with South Ire-dell, we here at Monday Morning Quarterback are turning in our equip-ment until next season.

We’ll still follow West Stokes as long as their season continues through

www.YadkinValleySports.com. And we’ll publish all-conference and all-state teams on the web site as those are released. But this will be the last hurrah in 2011 for our unique week-ly digital magazine devoted to high school football in the Northwest and MVAC.

We hope you’ve had as much fun waking up to this unique product ev-ery Monday morning as we’ve had putting it together each weekend.

Each issue of the magazine will remain archived at www.YadkinVal-leySports.com until next football sea-son. Feel free to print pages or share links with your friends and family. Contact us if you are interested in pur-chasing any photos that you saw here.

Thanks again to our advertising partners for making Monday Morn-ing Quarterback possible, and to our contributing writers and photographers who shared their talents with us each week to help tell the story of the sea-son. Until next year, thanks again for reading and for joining us on the cut-ting edge of community sports jour-nalism. God bless.

1The coaches had it right in their conference predictions. Mountain

Valley 1A/2A coaches picked Star-mount to edge Wilkes Central for the regular season title, while Northwest 1A/2A coaches tabbed West Stokes to ascend past Mount Airy to the top of their league. That’s exactly what hap-pened. Starmount rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Wilkes Central 24-17 on the final night of the regular sea-son. Both teams had been unbeaten going into that contest. West Stokes got past Mount Airy on the opening night of the Northwest play and fend-ed off all other challengers the rest of the way.

2West Stokes will finish first in our final Elite Eight power

rankings. Starmount, West Stokes and Wilkes Central were 1-2-3 – in that order – from the preseason all the way through to the final night of the regular season in our weekly power poll of Northwest and MVAC teams. West Stokes will take over the top spot by virtue of advancing to the third round of the state playoffs and not losing any games in the regu-lar season. It’s hard to bet against a team that has made so much history this autumn. Look for the final Elite Eight power rankings at www.Yadk-inValleySports.com once the season is complete.

3One head coach has already stepped aside. East Wilkes head

man Monty Chipman resigned his post last week after a long tenure

with the Cardinals. Chipman had East Wilkes in the playoffs virtually every year. His final team finished 3-8, los-ing at Mitchell in the opening round of the 1A playoffs. One of the Cards’ top moments of the season came in a 27-7 win over Elkin. East Wilkes hadn’t beaten the Buckin’ Elks in sev-eral years.

4South Stokes earns this year’s Most Improved Award by a

landslide. North Surry wrote the most dramatic rags-to-riches tale in 2010, going from a 1-10 program the year before to an eight-win unit last season. South Stokes followed suit with something similar. After post-ing a 4-29 combined record in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the 2011 Sauras en-joyed their best campaign in years –

maybe decades – at 6-6. They beat Mount Airy. They hosted a state play-off game for the first time since the 1970s and won it over Lake Norman Charter.

5Football was solid in Stokes County all around. West Stokes,

as noted, is still playing and boasts a school best 13-0 record. North Stokes went 5-7 in Jason Lippard’s debut as head coach – more wins than last season. The Vikings nearly advanced past the opening round of the play-offs, falling by a point at Andrews. All three Stokes programs appear in great shape moving forward.

6Surry County rivalry games seemed to provide some of the

best excitement week-in and week-

2011 Season In Review

First & 10Ten things to take away from the 2011 football season

out. Whenever Mount Airy, North Sur-ry, Surry Central and East Surry teams tangled with one another, memorable games were sure to follow. Fortunately for fans, at least one rivalry showdown happened about every week during the conference schedule.

7 There was some tragedy amid the triumphs. East Wilkes run-

ning back Landon Walker suffered serious injuries in an early August ATV accident. He is still hospitalized but making steady improvements, which is remarkable considering the early prognosis was not promising at all. Starmount’s starting quarterback Christian Hurt broke a vertebrae in his neck during a collision in the Rams’ first-round state playoff game against East Lincoln on Nov. 4. The injury and subsequent surgery will keep Hurt in a neck halo for a few months. But amaz-ingly, Hurt had the strength to attend this past Friday’s game against Salis-bury. The sight of Hurt walking hand-in-hand with teammates onto the field Friday night will be one of the endur-ing images of this season.

8MVP awards certainly aren’t cut and dry this season in either

conference. There were plenty of standouts in the MVAC and North-west deserving of consideration for the offensive and defensive player of the year honors in each league. While the voting among coaches has already occurred, there will be suspense until those tallies are finally released by the two conferences.

9Starmount will head into next season carrying a 33-game con-

ference winning streak. The Rams added eight more league victories to their ledger this fall. The last time a Starmount team didn’t walk off the field following a conference win was 2007 when Ashe County knocked them off in an October clash in Boon-

ville. The Rams also enjoyed back-to-back undefeated regular season campaigns for the first time in school history.

10It’s hard to tell now who will be the favorites for

2012. Starmount and West Stokes both won their respective JV con-ferences this season and should be able to restock their rosters pretty well. Surry Central will return one of the top backs in this part of the state in Wes Brown. South Stokes will bring back a lot of young tal-ent, including a ferocious lineback-er in Zack Singleton. Mount Airy was young this year and should have the personnel to get back into the conference title conversation. And there is always a surprise team or two that rises up. Wilkes Cen-tral, West Wilkes and Ashe Coun-ty should challenge again in the MVAC. We’ll certainly have plenty

East Wilkes running back Landon Walker is making steady improve-ments following his accident.

During pre-game coverage last week, we posed six burning questions about area high school football at www.Yad-kinValleySports.com. Below are the questions again — and how what trans-pired on Friday night helped to answer them:

1. Will we be talking about a Star-mount-Wilkes Central rematch by midnight tonight?

What we wrote: “If so, that means the Rams and Eagles both will have beaten formidable opponents. Salisbury is the defending 2AA state champions, while Thomasville is, well, Thomasville – one of the most storied small-schools programs in North Carolina, boasting eight state championships in its history (including four since 2004). It would be a remarkable feat for one or both of the local squads from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A to advance through to the next round. Wilkes Central made it to the third round a year ago.”

What happened: Starmount and Wil-kes Central both gave solid efforts but both teams fell to their second-round opponents. The Rams trailed just 14-6 at the half but struggled to get its offense cranking against a ball-control Salisbury team. The Eagles led Thomasville 3-0 at the break but missed opportunities came back to haunt them after the break.

2. How will Starmount fare with-out one of its offensive leaders, senior Christian Hurt?

What we wrote: “In last week’s play-off opener against East Lincoln, Hurt absorbed a hard hit and broke vertebrae in his neck. He is out of the hospital now, thankfully, but his football career at Starmount has ended. How will Hurt’s situation affect the team, on the field and in the locker room? … From a motiva-tional standpoint, the whole Starmount community has rallied around Hurt, and he had some inspirational posts on his Facebook page on Thursday.”

What happened: Christian Hurt at-

tended the game and walked out with the captains for the coin toss, inspir-ing a lot of Starmount fans with his re-markable progress. Fondae McDaniel, wearing Hurt’s No. 5 to honor his good friend, scored a first-half touchdown but that was it for points for the Rams, who lost 35-6.

3. Can Wilkes Central contain Quanny?

What we wrote: “That would be Thomasville running back Shaquan Johnson, who blazed for a school-record 381 yards and scored five touchdowns in last week’s win against Surry Central. Johnson is the obvious option No. 1 for the Bulldogs, but recent opponents who have known what is coming haven’t been able to slow Johnson down. Not even an ankle injury seemed to keep him off stride last week. Wilkes Cen-

tral’s best defense might be a methodi-cal, ball-control offense that keeps the ball away from Thomasville.”

What happened: Johnson ran wild again, helping Thomasville rally in the second half for a 28-16 win. Johnson carried the ball 42 times for 286 yards, scoring on runs of 77 and 1 yards.

4. Can West Wilkes crack Swain County’s stifling defense?

What we wrote: “The Blackhawks will face a team that gave up an average of just 7 points per game during the reg-ular season. No team scored more than 14 against the Maroon Devils, and that includes 3A Franklin which won a 14-6 scrap back in early September. West Wilkes may be encouraged that Avery put up 35 points on Swain in last week’s playoff opener, including 22 in the sec-ond quarter. Of course Swain worked

the scoreboard over for 63 points to win going away … The Blackhawks aren’t afraid to get physical, and their experience playing Starmount, Wil-kes Central and Ashe County should pay off. The Hawks will need anoth-er strong night from steady tailback Tyler Woods, who has put up eight 100-yard games on the season.”

What happened: The game stayed close until the fourth quarter, with Swain leading 8-6 at the half and by the same score entering the final 12 minutes. But West Wilkes did in fact struggle to crack Swain’s tough stop-ping unit and saw its season come to an end in Bryson City, 28-6.

5. Will 13 be lucky for West Stokes?

What we wrote: “The Wildcats obviously want to finish 16-0 and win a state championship trophy. But to get there, the Cats have to beat their 13th opponent tonight, Cuthb-ertson. Don’t be deceived by Cuth-bertson’s pedestrian record of 6-6. The Cavaliers can score in bunches, averaging 42 points per game over their last eight outings. They are 6-2 during that stretch (after start-ing the year 0-4) ... Defense has been a strong point for West Stokes, and that likely looms as the biggest key tonight.”

What happened: West Stokes gave up a season high in points but still came out on top. A missed extra point nearly came back to haunt the ’Cats when Cuthbertson went ahead 42-41 with less than two minutes to play. But quarterback Austin Flem-ing directed a game-winning drive to give West Stokes the 47-42 triumph. The Wildcats are now 13-0 as they get ready for South Iredell this Fri-day.

6. Can the magic continue for the boys from Walnut Cove?

What we wrote: “South Stokes has already exceeded most folks’ expectations this fall by winning six games – triple the amount the pro-

gram has won over the past three years combined. South Stokes host-ed a state playoff game for the first time since the 1970s last week and treated fans to a win over Lake Nor-man Charter. The competition stiff-ens quite a bit this week, with South Stokes heading to Monroe to face the 9-3 Redhawks. Monroe handled an East Surry team last week (51-7) that beat the Sauras during the regu-lar season. Regardless, South Stokes should be loose and carefree tonight knowing that everything from here on out is gravy added to one of the best seasons in recent memory.”

What happened: Monroe won for the second time against a Northwest 1A/2A foe, building an early lead and cruising to a 50-3 triumph. South Stokes finishes 6-6, with plenty still to hold its head high about.

KING — The undefeated West Stokes Wildcats dug deep and kept their record unblemished Friday night with a 47-42 come-from-behind-win over a solid Cuthbertson Cavaliers team in the second round of the state playoffs.

Austin Fleming had four rushing touchdowns on the evening and added one passing touchdown, which proved the game winner with 1:45 left.

“I’m really happy for these boys be-cause they’ve worked really hard and they deserve it,” said West Stokes head coach Jimmy Upchurch after the game. “We got down earlier and bounced back, and then they came storming back. That is the first time we have trailed in a game since the fourth game of the year.

“The way this team dug deep and came back says a lot for their character. They’ve always been winners.”

The Cavaliers quickly quieted the West Stokes fans when Emmitt Afam dodged

in and out of traffic on the opening kick-off and ran 87 yards for the touchdown. Quarterback/kicker Ryan Kendall added the extra point for an early 7-0 lead for Cuthbertson.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats got a great return from Dalton Boles when he dashed 46 yards down to the Cavaliers’ 27-yard line. The Cats set up first and 10, but then fumbled the ball after a nine yard gain giving the visiting team a much needed turnover.

Cuthbertson couldn’t covert on its first offensive possession and was forced to punt the ball back to the Wildcats. It took the Cats five plays over a span of 69 yards to score when Eorn Jenkins ran straight up the gut for a 34-yard touchdown. Matt Hopper kicked the game tying extra point with 7:07 left in the first quarter.

Like two heavyweight going at it, Cuthbertson responded on the its next possession by going 65 yards in five plays of their own and scored when Julius Stradford scampered 42 yards for his only touchdown of the game. Kendall spilt the

uprights on the PAT for the 14-7 lead. The Cavaliers looked to finish the

Wildcats early by recovering an onside kick on the kickoff, but the Wildcats survived the Cavaliers offensive output when Brandon Poulsen recovered a fum-ble by them.

The Wildcats’ emotion from defense filtered over onto the offense and they re-sponded when Fleming rumbled 15 yards and scored his first of four touchdowns on the evening. Zane McGhee added the point after and knotted the score at 14 with 27 seconds left in the first frame.

Cuthbertson was the first to respond with a score in the second quarter when they took a 21-14 lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kendall to Afam. Fleming added touchdown runs of 14 and 40 yards to give the Cats a 27-21 halftime led. The Wildcats made one of the two ex-tra point attempts in which the one miss almost came back to haunt them.

The Wildcats took the opening pos-session of the third quarter and marched 58 yards in six plays and scored on Flem-

ing’s fourth rushing touchdown from four yards out. The extra point was made and the Cats extended their lead to 34-21 with 9:24 left in the third quarter.

The rest of the third quarter was quiet until the 49-second mark of the frame. Cuthbertson scored on some trickery as they converted a 42-yard touchdown pass on third-and-15 when Kendall handed the ball off to Evan Riney and then he turned and threw a pass back to Kendall where he ran untouched down the left side line for pay dirt. Kendall added the extra point and the Wildcats’ lead was cut to six points.

The Wildcats’ Brock Reynolds re-sponded quickly when he fielded the kickoff on the 5-yard line, almost slipped and fell, but kept his feet, and then gal-loped 95-yards for the touchdown. Not to be out done, the Cavaliers had a run of 57 yards by Stradford on first down, and the Kendall scored from five yards out with 13 seconds still left in the third quarter.

Kendall added the extra point as Cuth-bertson closed the gap to 41-35 entering the game’s last quarter.

Compared to the first three quarters of play, the fourth quarter was a little boring early on, but the last three minutes of play more than made up for it. Cuthbertson’s defense got a much needed stop when the Wildcats were in their territory with four minutes to play. The Wildcats were forced to punt and Fleming placed the ball on the 15-yard line where the Cavs would take over.

After no gain on a first down rush by Stradford, and a Kendall incomplete pass on second down, Kendall and Afam hooked up for a 85-yard touchdown pass on a third-and-10 situation. The extra point was added and the Cavilers took a 42-41 lead with 2:47 showing on the game clock.

Just like so many great quarterback comebacks, the Cavaliers left to much time on the game clock for Fleming. The Wildcats started on their own 32-yard line with only one timeout. Fleming marched his team down the field and connected on his final pass of the drive — a 47-yard touchdown over the middle to Boles.

Boles ran the last 25-yards untouched down the home side line with 1:45 left in the game. The two point conversion at-tempt failed leaving the score at 47-42.

The Cats’ defense stepped up on the final drive by Cuthbertson. An incom-plete pass by Kendall on first down, and then a sack by West Stokes’ Tyler Bullard on second down gave the team a much needed boost on the last two plays by the Cavaliers.

Fleming led the offensive attack for West Stokes with 247 rushing yards, a career best, on 25 carries. Jenkins carried the ball 17 times and had 96 yards to help balance out the rushing output. The Cats had 360 yards rushing in the game, and Fleming had 87 yards passing on 3-of-5 for a total of 447 yards of offense.

Cuthbertson tallied the most offensive yards on the Cats of any team this season, finishing with 425 total yards. The Cavs had 256 yards rushing, and 169 yards passing on 7-for-18 in the game. Strad-ford hurt the Wildcats with 27 carries for 251-yards.

Defensively for West Stokes, Bullard led the team with 13 tackles – five for a loss and two sacks.

The two sacks set a new school record

(21) for most career sacks, previously held by former Wildcat standout Calvin Cade (19). Bullard now has 20 sacks on the season, a season record for West Stokes.

Helping Bullard on defense was Zack Manley with 11 tackles, and Brandon Helvey and Anthony Wilding with eight tackles each.

The Wildcats (13-0) will host old con-ference foe South Iredell (13-0) in a game of unbeatens this Friday. This will be the Wildcats’ first time playing in the sec-tional finals, with only final eight teams left standing in the state’s 2AA playoff brackets.

“This is an exciting time for us,” Up-church said after Friday’s win. “We are entering unchartered waters and we are excited. We will enjoy this win tonight, but come early tomorrow we will start preparing for a very, very good South Ire-dell team. A lot of polls have them ranked one in 2A after the last week of the regu-lar season. It should be fun.”

2A State Playoffs In Focus

By Eric LuskEditor

BOONVILLE — One week after suf-fering a serious neck injury on a helmet-to-helmet collision, Starmount senior Christian Hurt was back on the football field.

Hurt wasn’t able to play following last weekend’s surgery to repair broken vertebrae, but he was able to attend the Rams’ second-round playoff contest against Salisbury. Sporting a neck halo that he will be required to wear for up to three months, Hurt walked out of the locker room with the team and joined the captains at midfield for the pre-game coin toss.

That image might have been the most enduring of the evening for the Star-mount community. It certainly put per-spective on the Rams’ 35-6 loss to the visiting Hornets. Hurt also joined his teammates for the post-game huddle in the shadow of the stadium scoreboard.

Rams coach Scott Johnson said it had been an emotional week for his squad.

“They were wanting to do big things for him, putting a little extra pressure on themselves I think,” the coach said of his players. “But they played as hard as they could and gave their best effort. They’ve got nothing to be ashamed of.”

Fondae McDaniel, another senior on the squad, wore Hurt’s No. 5 for the Salisbury game. McDaniel typically wears No. 4.

When McDaniel scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, he immediate-ly started pointing to the No. 5 number on his jersey as he made his way back to the sidelines. It was McDaniel’s idea to change numbers for the game, Johnson said.

“He and Christian apparently talked about it,” the coach said. “He asked me about it yesterday and I talked to Chris-tian about it. He said he wanted him to. They have been best friends forever.”

Hurt’s absence in the huddle and during offensive plays certainly proved tough for the Rams, who were trying to

solve a veteran defense with many of the same players from last year’s 2AA state title run. Starmount managed just 131 rushing yards on the night.

Hurt had been the Rams’ third leading rusher for the season, gaining 706 yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He had a huge game a couple of weeks ago to lead Starmount past Wilkes Central for the conference title.

Samuel Stone played nearly the entire game at quarterback Friday. Trey Money came in for one series in the final period.

“We had to scheme up some things and try to do some things differently,”

Johnson said. “(Not having Hurt) takes away one threat there. It is nothing against Samuel or Trey or anybody else. It’s just Christian is a dynamic runner back there. We told them it couldn’t be one guy, everybody had to pick it up and they did their best.”

Starmount’s season comes to an end at 11-1. Hurt and his fellow seniors can say they’ve been a part of a program that has won four consecutive conference championships. The Rams haven’t lost a league game since 2007. They had been undefeated at home for the season until losing Friday.

2A State Playoffs Game Coverage

By Rick PapsunContributing Writer

BOONVILLE – It’s an adage as old as football itself: Defense wins champi-onships. Such was the case for defend-ing state 2AA champion Salisbury in its second round game Friday at undefeat-ed Starmount.

The Hornets returned eight starters this year on defense from a team that went 13-3 last fall en route to garner-ing the state title. That experience on defense proved to be all the Rams could handle in a 35-6 Salisbury victory.

The win vaults the Hornets (11-2) into a third-round rematch with Thom-asville, which knocked off Salisbury 34-27 on a waning second’s touchdown back on Oct. 21. The loss ends the Rams season at 11-1.

With Rams’ star standout quarter-back Christian Hurt out for the season, the Hornets knew they were to face pre-dominately a running attack from Star-mount. In response, Salisbury stacked the box with eight men, all playoff ex-perienced, all night, daring the Rams to pass.

The results: When all was said and done, the vaunted Rams’ rushing at-tack, which had struck fear in countless opponents all year, was stymied to the tune of just 131 yards all night, while the passing attack was non-existent, go-ing 0-for-5 with an interception.

Hornets’ coach Joe Pinyan expected a hard fought defensive battle and indi-cated his team’s experienced defensive unit would be the difference in the con-test.

“We had eight back on defense from our championship team and the kids were really intense on defense all night,” he said. “I’ll tell ya’, that’s

a whole lot different team without that Hurt kid. That’s a quality program right there.”

Hurt suffered a serious neck injury in last week’s win over East Lincoln. He attended Friday’s game wearing a neck halo, and his presence during pregame activities buoyed the home team. But his absence on the field took away one of the Rams’ most important dimen-sions.

“We had to scheme up some things and try to do some things differently,” Starmount coach Scott Johnson said. “It takes away one threat there. It is nothing against Samuel (Stone) or Trey (Mon-ey) or anybody else. It’s just Christian is a dynamic runner back there.”

The Salisbury defense flexed its muscles early on, forcing the Rams to go three-and-out on their first three pos-sessions. Meanwhile, its offense put to-gether two short drives capped by TD runs from quarterback Brian Bauk and running back Dominique Disbuke to forge a 14-0 cushion early in the second quarter.

Dazed but not knocked out, that’s when Starmount made the game inter-esting by putting together what would be its longest drive of the season. Start-ing at the Salisbury 37, the Rams me-thodically picked away at the Hornets’ stern defense, holding on to the ball for nearly the entire second quarter. They finally hit pay dirt 17 plays later when

Fondae McDaniel rolled in from one-yard out with 1:13 left in the half. The extra point sailed right, but the lead was nearly cut in half at 14-6.

“The drive we had in the second quarter was as good a drive as you could ask for,” Johnson said.

Maybe best of all, it kept the ball out of the hands of a Salisbury offense that had earned 999 yards the previous two games.

“Their best defense tonight was to keep it away from us on offense and that drive did just that. I don’t think we had the ball but for a couple minutes the whole second quarter,” Pinyon said.

After intercepting Bauk in the end zone early in the third quarter, Star-mount mounted another sustained drive (10 plays), but that one stalled near mid-field.

The opportunistic Hornets’ took ad-vantage of superior ensuing field posi-tion and took just five plays to score again. This time junior Justin Ruffin broke a tackle at the 40 and cut across field on his way to a 53-yard TD scram-ble.

Pinyon said he thought that series of events were instrumental in changing the game’s momentum for good.

“It was so key for us to answer in the second half with a stop (on defense) and a touchdown,” he said.

Starmount followed with a three-and-out, setting up Salisbury for a drive that was the proverbial nail in the coffin, as the Hornets ate up much of the remain-ing fourth quarter time with a 10-play 62-yard drive which culminated with a five-yard score by Ruffin that made the count 28-6 with just 3:27 left.

After Starmount turned the ball over on downs, Salisbury added one more score for good measure as Dismuke scored from one-yard out with 54 ticks remaining.

“That’s a good football team. Joe has done a great job with them,” Star-mount’s Johnson said. “They have ob-

viously been coached well. You don’t win a state championship without doing a good job. With the situation we were in, with our quarterback being out, we needed some breaks and we didn’t quite catch any it seemed like today. We may have got them all last week.”

The Rams reached 11 wins for the second consecutive season. They also finished undefeated in the regular sea-son for the second year in a row, win-ning a fourth-straight conference cham-

pionship. While the state playoff run didn’t last as long as the team would have liked, Johnson said there was nothing for any of his players to hang their heads about.

“This bunch right here has had an outstanding year. A lot of people doubt-ed them. We heard people mumbling that we would be third in our league,” he said. “To come back and do what they have done, they’ve got a lot to be proud of.”

THOMASVILLE — After giving his team its final postgame speech of the season, following a 28-16 loss to Thomasville on Friday in the second round of the 2A state playoffs, Wilkes Central coach Jeremy Funderburk divided his team into two lines.

The line to his right consisted of players who are charged to live up to the standard set by the group standing, some weeping, to his left — a senior class of more than 20 who led the Eagles to consecutive 10-win seasons.

“It’s a special class,” Funderburk said. “They’ve done so many great things here. It’s been a long journey for these guys. This is the longest line I’ve ever made here. There’s nothing here to hang their heads about.”

Thomasville was able to advance to next week’s showdown in the sectional final with last year’s 2AA champion Salisbury behind another huge performance from running back Shaquan Johnson. The Bulldogs’ shifty back piled up 292 yards on 42 attempts, including a 77-yard ankle-breaking run that lifted Thomasville’s lead to 14-3 midway through the third quarter.

Johnson has erupted for nearly 700 yards and seven touchdowns in the opening two rounds of the playoffs.

“He’s special,” Funderburk said. “We knew we had to contain him. You’re not going to stop that kid. We did a good job of that in the first

half, but we let him get loose on the draw. We had a good game plan and executed it for the most part, but when you get down, you have to take chances and they took advantage.”

Wilkes Central took a 3-0 lead into halftime behind a 37-yard field goal by Zach Joines, but could have easily been ahead by more. The Eagles failed to score on a couple of long drives and dropped an interception that could possibly have been returned for a touchdown in the final seconds of the half.

The Eagles’ defense did hold Thomasville scoreless on three first-half trips in the red zone.

“We were playing the game that we wanted to play, especially defensively,” Funderburk said. “We were standing up strong and not letting (Johnson) get away from us. We left 14 points on the field in the first half and you just can’t do that against a team that you know is going to score.”

The Bulldogs, the champions of the Central Carolina Conference, seized the momentum for good on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Quarterback Shakeem Peterson faked a handoff to Johnson, rolled to his left and connected in stride with Quindale Williams for a 65-yard touchdown that gave Thomasville the lead for good. It was Peterson’s only completion of the game.

“We knew it was coming,” Funderburk said. “The safety just didn’t get back. We knew when (Williams) went out there that they were going to throw the football. It wasn’t difficult. We

knew that (Williams) was going to get it because (Sharaun Mouzone) couldn’t catch it (with a broken hand). The kid just threw it up and he ran right under it.”

Williams also had a 64-yard scoring run on his only rushing attempt of the game that extended the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-3 early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles tried to mount a rally behind a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes by quarterback Austin McConnell.

McConnell finished the game 8-of-10 with scoring passes to Jordan Carlton and Hunter Combs.

It was over when … Wilkes Central was flagged for a late hit on the quarterback following a third-down incompletion with four minutes to play in the game and trailing 21-10. The Bulldogs were able to milk three more minutes off the clock and punch in another touchdown to put the game out of reach.

Turning point of the game — Thomasville landed the big haymaker on the play action bomb to start the second half, but Wilkes Central responded with a steady drive and was on schedule — facing a 3rd-and-3 from the Bulldogs’ 40-yard line. McConnell faked an inside handoff and was staggered by blitzing linebacker Dezmond Wilson and finally sacked by Greg Johnson for a 9-yard loss. The Eagles punted and two plays later, Johnson electrified the Cushwa Stadium crowd with his first touchdown run.
