Jim Mullen, Conductor and Music Director Rafael Ramirez, Assistant Conductor

Under the direction of conductor Jim Mullen and Assistant Conductor, Rafael Ramirez, the Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds is proud to once again be part of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Memorial Day Ceremony. With a membership of more than 70 dedicated musicians who volunteer their time and talents, the Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds provides live music throughout South Florida.

Some of the wonderful concerts where they have performed include: the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Light Up events, the 4th of July Spectacular, and the Memorial Day Ceremony as well as the City of Pompano Beach’s 9/11 Ceremony and several pops concerts. The Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds proudly supports the annual Four Chaplains Memorial program each January for the 9th District American Legion Posts and a concert each year to support the Honor Flight Organization.

From the classroom to the rehearsal hall to the stage, Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds Conductor and trumpeter Jim Mullen’s work in the field of music includes teaching, directing, and playing in all levels of ensembles. His lifelong career reflects a passion for community service through music-making and investing in the next generation of musicians.

Rafael Ramirez, Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds Associate Conductor, has been the master percussionist and assistant conductor with numerous bands and orchestras for more than 30 years in South Florida. We are very fortunate to have him as part of the Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds family.

Soloist James PerkowskiJames Perkowski, a popular tenor in South Florida, has appeared multiple times abroad, most recently in London, and has delighted sold out audiences in Sweden and Finland with his deep rich unmistakable voice.

Perkowski has performed his one man show “The 11 O’Clock Spots” on Windstar and Seabourn cruise lines, has sung for Pope John Paul II in Rome, and in 1985, sang for the Kennedy family. James has shared the stage with Barbara Cook at the Broward Center, Toni Braxton at the Flamingo in Las Vegas, and Patty LaBelle for the AIDS Walk South Florida, and was featured on Deanne Martin’s (Dean’s Daughter) CD, “Memories are Made of These.” He also recently completed his own CD entitled, “To Broadway and Beyond.”

James made his debut with the Sunrise Pops Orchestra under the baton of Peter Graves. He has been featured on numerous occasions with the Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds and has drawn rave reviews for his vocal renditions!

MEMORIAL DAY 2021

TOLLING OF THE BOATSFor our guests who may not understand the significance of our “Tolling of the Boats” ceremony, it is a simple and solemn remembrance of our shipmates: The officers and enlisted men who lost their lives aboard submarines in service to our country.

Over the years, some 4,000 young men and women have lost their lives while serving our country in the U.S. Submarine Force. In all, a total of 72 U.S. submarines have been lost.

We shall never forget them

OUR FLAGSSince the beginning of the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Lauderdale Memorial Park, families of Veterans have graciously donated flags that were draped on the caskets of their loved ones during funeral services. Several of the donated flags date back more than 50 years. Many of the original nameplates honoring the Veterans whose flags were donated remain on display and several of the original flags are flying proudly today in various areas throughout the cemetery.
