Celebrating Beginnings and Endings The school year is quickly coming to an end, but not slowing down in the least. Concerts, plays, ceremonies, and

spring activities keep Titan fans hopping from night to night. As I attend events across the district, I realize how blessed I am to be a part of the Tea Area family. I have the privilege to experience classes, activities, and individual student interactions with our students from three to eighteen years of age. There are incredible things happening every day. Our students have amazing talents. We have our rough spots and areas that need improvement, but the hearts and souls of teachers, parents, and students continually shine through as we work together to make Tea Area special.

The month of May brings with it many emotions as we celebrate both endings and beginnings. As you look down our hallways, the first graders are stomping their way to second grade, our seniors are running to the finish line, and our retirees are skipping their way into retirement. Each of these transitions will be joyously celebrated, but most of us will shed a few tears as we wonder how life continues to slip by so quickly and wonder what is in store for us next. Perhaps Dr. Seuss described life best in Oh the Places You’ll Go!, as he wrote about the triumphs and trials that come with life. Tea Area is a special place because of the people who make it great.

I am blessed to call Tea Area home and sincerely thank each of you who make this a special place to be. Seniors, thank you for building a legacy of excellence and being tremendous role models to our youngest Titans. Do not forget you will always be a Titan!

Have a wonderful summer,

Students in Grade 4 study South Dakota History as part of the Social Studies curriculum. This year's study was a part of the SD Road Trip (sponsored by HealthEdventure). Classrooms received burr oak trees to plant on the school campus, supplied by Poet Ethanol. The 4TH Grade students would like to thank Mr. Wayne Larsen for helping plant the trees on the east side of Tea Area Intermediate.

Summer is a time when reading retention starts slipping. You can help prevent reading loss by reading over the summer. There are a few summer reading programs that can help.

Barnes and Noble has a reading program. This year’s theme is “Imagination’s Destination”. Elementary students; grades 1 -6, can read eight books between May 21 – September3 and win a free book.

Those that have a library card at the Siouxland Library can participate in the summer reading program. This year’s theme is “Dig into Reading”. Read for 20 minutes for 30 days and win prizes. There is a teen program also. Students 5th grade and up can read 5 books between May 18-August 5 can earn prizes also.

For students who need extra help with reading, Siouxland Libraries offer a free Tutoring program that runs from July8 – August 1. For more information you can check their website.

Jim at Siouxland libraries sends me all the names of the students who participate in the Siouxland summer reading programs. Those students will receive a special treat in the Fall.

Have a great summer with books!

The Feeding South Dakota BackPack Program is a program designed to reduce the risk of hun-

ger among children over weekends and holidays. Small bags of nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods

are sent home with children on the last day of school each week. They are distributed discretely

so no one knows who receives them. There are no income guidelines to qualify for this program,

as it’s based on the family’s needs.

Tea Area School District is pleased to announce that we will offer the BackPack Program to our

students in the Junior Kindergarten through 6th Grade for the 2013-2014 school year. Because

it’s our first year, we will need to raise all the funds on our own in hopes that we can qualify for ad-

ditional funding in the future.

Registration for students wishing to utilize this program will start on Registration Day, August 6,

2013 and will continue throughout the school year as needs arise. The number of students receiv-

ing the BackPack Program will be determined by the amount of funds raised. Students will be se-

lected on a first come, first served basis and a waiting list will be available.

Currently, Tea Area School District has 832 students in Grades K-6th. Of that number, 235 stu-

dents qualify for free or reduced lunch. Which is approximately 28 percent. An informal survey

provided to parents and guardians during the Parent/Teacher Conferences in November 2012 indi-

cated that approximately 40 students in grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade would utilize the

program today, if it was offered.

For one student, the BackPack Program costs $145 per year. This breaks down to:

$72 would feed a child for one semester

$36 would feed a child for one quarter

$16 would feed a child for one month

$4 would feed a child for one week

For 40 students, the District would need to raise at least $5,800

We need your help! If you are willing to donate to this cause, any amount big or small can make a

difference. Checks can be made out to: BackPack Program and are tax deductible. Please put

in the memo “Tea BPP” so funds are designated to our school only. Please mail or deliver all do-

nations to the Tea Area School District, Attn: Kara Spieler, PO Box 488, Tea, SD 57064, so we can

submit it to Feeding South Dakota.

Please direct questions, comments or volunteer inquires to: Kara Spieler, Elementary Counselor,

at 605-498-2700, option 1 or [email protected]

Re: New Computerized Payment System for School Meals

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Tea Area School District Food Service Department has purchased a new computerized point of sale (POS) system, to help increase efficiency, service, and accuracy for our school meal accounts. We are current-ly preparing to launch the NUTRIKIDS System on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. For the first few days, we antic-ipate meal lines to move slower as both staff and students become familiar with the new system. We appreci-ate your patience as we move forward.

Each current student has been entered into the system and assigned a unique ID number. This number will be encoded on their ID badge, which they will scan at their cashier station. NOTE: An ID badge is required for purchase of all TASD Food Service meals.

PAYMENTS: Account payments may still be made on students’ accounts by cash or check at their respective building in a sealed envelope with student’s name and ID number. For JrK-6 grade students, payment can be presented to their teacher at morning roll call; for 7-12 grade students, payment must be turned in at the Mid-dle School / High School office prior to the start of school. Payments being made for more than one student must include all students’ information and dollar amount to be applied to each student’s account.

Payment by credit/debit card or e-check online payments is still also available and highly encouraged. Each transaction carries a convenience fee of $1.95 per transaction. If making a payment for more than one stu-dent’s account, you will be asked for the total amount of payment and also prompted for the individual amount for each student’s account. Deadline for receiving online payment is 10:00 AM each school day. Payments re-ceived after the applicable deadline will be posted for the next day’s service.

Account payments will no longer be accepted by lunch line cashiers. Only small amounts of cash to pay for a student’s extra items will be accepted in the lunch line. Change will not be available.

When an account balance is low, the NUTRIKIDS system will allow a negative balance for one meal only. Af-ter that, students will be offered milk and bread with peanut butter at the Middle School / High School, or milk and a cheese sandwich for grades JrK-6. Purchases of school food will not be permitted until the account is adequately funded.

and specialized programs to offer our campers programs designed to suit their needs.

Summer Day Camp (June-August)For children and teens with disabilities who may not be ready for a week away, Camp High Hopes offers an adaptive Monday-Friday day camp program where each camper experiences some fun in the sun without mom and dad having to worry.

Spring & Fall Sessions (September-May)At Camp High Hopes we like to keep busy the whole year-round because we believe camp fun is more than just summer fun. During the Fall and Spring we offer overnight weekend

“respites” for youth and adults with disabilities who need that weekend away from home. As an added bonus, our sessions also include School-Break Day Camps for children and teens, along with Sleep-Away sessions for adults.

Travel SessionsFor the more experienced and adventurous, campers can join Camp High Hopes in heading out of Siouxland for a real getaway. From a day trip to Omaha to a long weekend in the Black Hills, campers have the opportunity to explore new destinations. These sessions are offered on special occasions throughout the year.

It’s always best to register early for Camp High Hopes programs as spots are limited and registration is first come-first served. And at Camp High Hopes, the early-bird gets $25 Smile Bucks to use in the campstore, a far better bonus than any worm.
